Midsummer's Answer

Midsummer's Answer

On the day the results came out, Chen Yu's hand holding the mouse paused on the query page for a long time. Jiang Yizhou was squatting next to him, his fingertips unconsciously scratching the table leg, and he was even more nervous than him.

"Click." Jiang Yizhou's voice was a little tense.

Chen Yu took a deep breath and clicked the search button. The page buffer circle spun three times, and when the score popped up, neither of them spoke.

"I passed..." Chen Yu murmured, his eyes suddenly feeling a little warm, "I exceeded the admission score of University A by 30 points."

Jiang Yizhou stood up suddenly, knocking the chair behind him over with a clang. He grabbed Chen Yu's wrist, pulled him up from the chair, and ran out of the house. He rushed down the stairs and stopped at the open space in the community. He shouted to the sky: "Chen Yu passed the exam! Got into University A!"

The shouting startled the sparrows in the tree and also alarmed the neighbors. Some people leaned out to see what was happening, but Jiang Yizhou didn't care. He just held Chen Yu and spun around, his laughter making people's ears hurt.

"What about you? Have you checked your grades?" Shen Yu struggled out of his arms and asked breathlessly.

Jiang Yizhou slapped his head and pulled him back. His score page was still on the screen. He scored a few points lower than Shen Yu, but he still passed the A-level line.

"I told you," Jiang Yizhou raised his chin proudly, "following Chen Xueba is the right choice."

Chen Yu looked at the light in his eyes and suddenly remembered the time when they first met. This person crumpled up his failing test paper and stuffed it under the desk, and when the teacher called his name, he stiffened his neck and refused to bow his head.

In the evening, they went to their usual riverside spot. The river breeze, carrying moisture, dispelled the summer heat. Jiang Yizhou pulled a box from his backpack and opened it, revealing two cakes with the word "Congratulations" scrawled across them.

"My mom baked it to celebrate our 'double happiness.'" He scratched his head. "Actually, I insisted she write it."

Shen Yu took a bite of the cake. The cream was a little sweet, sweet to the heart. "When did you tell your mother?"

"Last time, when you said you were applying to the same city," Jiang Yizhou looked at him seriously, "My mom said that being able to become better with you is better than anything else."

The neon lights in the distance lit up, reflected on the river surface, shattering into a galaxy. Jiang Yizhou suddenly hugged him from behind, his chin resting on his shoulder, and said softly: "Chen Yu, do you remember the railway crossing? I said, wherever you go, I will go."

Shen Yu didn't say anything, but just held his hand around her waist.

The wind rustled through the reeds, echoing the gentlest response of this midsummer. Their futures, separated by an acceptance letter, had already been tightly bound together by countless days and nights spent side by side.
