Chapter Eight: Obtaining the Marriage Certificate
Xinli slept until the next morning.
Feeling refreshed, Xinli quickly made her bed and went downstairs.
He Mingzhou was already waiting outside the door.
Upon seeing her emerge, the man's tense profile seemed to soften considerably.
Seeing this, Xin Li raised an eyebrow. What did this man mean? Did he think she would regret it?
What a joke! She's the only powerful figure in the whole book, and no one will regret it!
With a smile, Xin Li strode over: "You're up early! Shall we go and complete the formalities now?"
Just as He Mingzhou was about to speak, Zhang Jinhua chased after him.
"Let's eat something first. There's no rush to get married. The office isn't even open yet."
“You slept so soundly yesterday that I went to call you for breakfast but you didn’t wake up, so I didn’t call you again. You must be hungry now, have some breakfast before you go.”
As soon as Zhang Jinhua finished speaking, Xin Li's stomach started growling.
She blushed, touched her lower abdomen, and said, "I am a little hungry. Thank you, sister-in-law."
Zhang Jinhua chuckled and said, "Oh, don't be so polite with your sister-in-law."
"Xiao He, why don't you have some too?"
He Mingzhou nodded and walked over to sit down next to Xin Li.
I thought that a delicate girl like Xinli would eat slowly and carefully.
Unexpectedly, her movements were extremely expansive and bold, yet they did not come across as rude; on the contrary, they were quite appetizing.
A look of surprise flashed in He Mingzhou's eyes, and he actually ate quite a bit as well.
Zhang Jinhua smiled so much that the wrinkles on his face smoothed out.
"Xinxin has such a good appetite, you can tell she's easy to feed. Is there anything you'd like to eat for lunch? Tell your sister-in-law in advance and she'll prepare it for you."
Just as Xinli was about to refuse, Zhang Jinhua said, "You two are doing something important today, so you should celebrate, right? Have lunch at my place, and then you can go to your own place for dinner. Don't be shy with me."
Having said all that, Xinli had no choice but to agree.
Of course, you have to eat seafood when you get to the island. She mentioned a few common ones, and Zhang Jinhua smiled and said, "It's obvious that Xinxin did her homework. These are all local specialties. Alright, you two go get married. I'll prepare the things now and wait for you to come back to celebrate."
He Mingzhou and Xin Li thanked him in unison, and the two left Zhang Jinhua's house and headed straight for the office.
"Shouldn't we submit a report first?"
The process of military marriages is slightly more complicated than that of ordinary people.
He Mingzhou suddenly stopped, and Xin Li bumped straight into the man's broad back. Her nose tingled and her eyes quickly reddened.
He Mingzhou witnessed this scene, his brows furrowed tightly.
Are you going to cry just because you're pretending?
Are there really people who are this delicate?
"Are you sure you want to marry me? Once the report is submitted and the certificate is obtained, you won't be allowed to back out."
Xin Li thought He Mingzhou was going to say something, but upon hearing this, she nodded without hesitation: "I won't go back on my word!"
Just kidding, she emptied her entire Shanghai home to come and seek refuge with He Mingzhou. If she regrets it, she has nowhere else to go!
He Mingzhou was somewhat puzzled when he saw Xin Li's resolute attitude.
How could she agree so readily?
"You—" He was about to ask for clarification when Xinli grabbed his arm and pushed him forward: "Can't we talk about this after we get married?"
"Since you're already here, let's get the documents done as soon as possible and leave early."
He Mingzhou was pushed a few steps by Xin Li, a hint of surprise flashing in his eyes.
This woman is surprisingly strong?
Although he was of standard weight, he trained for many years, so he wasn't so easy to pull. Xin Li pushed this big man without breaking a sweat or getting out of breath, and seemed to be doing it very easily. Could it be that she had trained before?
But where would a pampered young lady from Shanghai learn these things?
I'm afraid you wouldn't even need to pour your own tea at home, would you?
He Mingzhou was initially hesitant about getting married.
I've definitely become more determined now.
Xin Li is a bit suspicious; I wonder if she's so keen on coming to the island because she has some ulterior motive.
Placing it next to him is a good idea.
After all, in name, she was He Mingzhou's fiancée.
"good."
He Mingzhou responded seriously, gently pulled his hand away from hers, and said softly, "I can walk by myself."
"Mmm!" Xinli breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that he finally stopped talking so much.
They came from the military compound and met many comrades along the way. Everyone was curious about who the little girl with him was.
Xin Li was not shy at all and openly declared that she was his betrothed.
"I'll be getting married in a few days, and I'll invite you all to my wedding."
He Mingzhou had never met many girls, let alone one as open and uninhibited as her.
The two went to the office and came out a short while later, with two marriage certificates in their hands.
This thing is quite rare in this era, and it's even rarer for Xinli, who lives in the apocalypse. She couldn't help but hold it in her hand and look at it over and over again.
He Mingzhou had already put away his own copy, but when he saw Xin Li's obvious affection for the marriage certificate, a strange glint flashed in his eyes.
Did he guess wrong? Was she really after marriage?
Where do we go next?
After admiring the documents for a while, Xin Li put them away and turned to He Mingzhou to ask a question.
"Once you've got your marriage certificate, you should pack your things and come live with me. It's not good to keep bothering your sister-in-law."
"Okay, okay, let's go back and move our things."
The two went back to Zhang Jinhua's house first, where Zhang Jinhua warmly invited them to have lunch together.
Xinli said she would go back to tidy up her place first and come back to eat later. Zhang Jinhua then told the two of them to let him know if they needed any help.
You can ask her for anything you need.
After agreeing, Xin Li dragged her suitcase and followed He Mingzhou home.
"Your sister-in-law is so hospitable."
He Mingzhou glanced at Xin Li after hearing her remark: "The people on the island are very simple and honest."
"really."
Xinli hadn't experienced such local customs and culture in a long time.
In this apocalyptic world fraught with danger, even a full meal is a luxury.
Although the island is a bit underdeveloped, it is stable, making it a perfect retirement destination for Xinli.
That's great, she can finally stop being on guard day and night and sleep until she naturally wakes up every day.
He Mingzhou caught a glimpse of Xin Li's blissful expression out of the corner of his eye, like a cat lazily basking in the sun, and paused in his tracks.
Xin Li took a few steps before realizing that He Mingzhou hadn't followed, and turned back in surprise: "What's wrong?"
He Mingzhou shook his head: "It's nothing."
Xin Li responded with an "oh" and slowed her pace to wait for He Mingzhou to catch up.
The sunlight cast long shadows of the two figures, adding a touch of ambiguous romance to the scene from a distance.
...
Shanghai Detention Center.
Ji Yubai was taken to a small room.
There was only one table in the middle, and a person was sitting with their back to him.
Ji Yubai didn't recognize who the person was at first glance.
It was only when the person heard the noise and turned around that Ji Yubai recognized him after they met face to face.
"Uncle Xu? What happened to you..."
Xu Changshan in front of me looked like a sapling that had been drained of its moisture, visibly withered and broken, with most of his hair turned white and his back hunched over.
"sit."
A venomous glint flashed in Xu Changshan's eyes.
He went to the Ji family but was beaten out by a group of Ji family members. When he returned to the old house, he was told that the old house had been donated to the country by Xin Li and that the wicked child had disappeared without a trace!
He had no choice but to take out the last bit of his savings and pull out all the strings before he finally got the chance to see Ji Yubai.
Where are those things?
