Chapter Sixty It's Raining
Before Aunt Yang could say anything more, Xin Li lifted both full bags of grain onto her shoulder with a single effort.
Aunt Yang was dumbfounded.
"You..."
She belatedly realized that Xin Li had also lightly lifted Wan Laosan, sending him flying, and she was a little puzzled.
How come Xinli looks so thin and weak, but has such great strength?
"Aren't you tired? Otherwise, I'll stay with you."
Aunt Yang had been doing manual labor since she was a child, especially after the men in the family left, she took on all the work herself, which is why she developed such great strength.
She never expected that Xin Li, a rich young lady from the city, would be just as strong as her.
She was worried that Xinli was pushing herself too hard and was afraid that she would exhaust herself, so she hurried over to help her share some of the burden.
Xinli dodged Aunt Yang's hand with a quick movement.
"I'll tell you if I can't fix it."
"Alright, Aunt Yang, let's not waste any more time and hurry back."
Seeing that Xinli seemed to have no feelings at all, Aunt Yang nodded and said, "Okay, let's go back quickly."
"Don't push yourself if you're tired, you must tell me."
"Okay, okay."
Xin Li spoke in a relaxed tone and looked even more relaxed.
When others saw Xinli carrying two large bags of grain so steadily, they all pointed and whispered in amazement.
Xinli didn't want to become the center of attention, so she quickened her pace considerably.
Xiao Hua had to jog alongside Aunt Yang to keep up.
Aunt Yang was even more surprised: "This... Xin Xin, are you born with superhuman strength?"
Who in their right mind could carry such a heavy load and still run that fast?
Soldiers might be able to do it, but they undergo day-to-day training, and no one is that capable from the start.
"Huh?" Xin Li realized that her behavior seemed a bit too frightening, and quickly tried to cover it up: "I am indeed very strong, it's natural."
Although she spoke of being conservative, Aunt Yang had already imagined many things in her mind.
No wonder Xinli adapted to the island so quickly after arriving. Isn't her ability perfect for an island?
Perhaps she'll feel more comfortable here.
Otherwise, in a place where delicate young girls gather, Xin Li would probably be the one disliked.
Thinking she knew the truth about why Xinli married into the island, Aunt Yang secretly warned herself that these were Xinli's private matters, and she must not gossip about them.
When they were almost at the dock, Aunt Yang told Xinli to put down a bag so they could drag it across.
Xinli knew that Aunt Yang meant well, and she had no interest in becoming the subject of gossip on the island again, so she did as Aunt Yang suggested, and the two of them laboriously dragged the food to the bed.
"Aunt Yang bought so much grain!"
"It seems like you've made a lot of money this year."
The people who came to the market together on the island looked enviously at the bulging snakeskin bag next to Aunt Yang.
Upon hearing this, Xin Li frowned.
Aunt Yang was disheveled; anyone with eyes could see that something had happened to her.
But the other party didn't ask any questions; all they cared about was the grain that Aunt Yang had bought.
Xinli turned her head away, too lazy to look at the ugly expressions of jealousy and envy from these people.
Aunt Yang clearly understood what the other person meant, and said helplessly, "Who said we made money? It's just that we have no choice. There are three mouths to feed in my family, and there's no man in the family. The harvest in the fields wasn't good this year either. If we don't buy some food to prepare, I'm afraid the three of us won't make it to next year."
The others were satisfied when they heard that Aunt Yang wasn't doing very well either.
That's how it is in small towns; they don't want to see you doing poorly, but they also don't want to see you doing too well.
Especially when your family is significantly better off than others, it can trigger malice.
Xinli was all too familiar with these emotions.
After all, the malice of the apocalypse is amplified infinitely, and everyone knows the principle of not flaunting wealth.
Some people are just born bad, and it's hard to prevent them from being so, no matter how hard you try.
After returning to the island, Xinli disregarded Aunt Yang's objections and personally delivered the food to Aunt Yang.
Remembering what Zhang Jinhua had said that day, Xin Li gave a special reminder: "The weather has been changing too quickly lately, so you'd better put your grain in a high place."
Aunt Yang, an elderly woman who had lived on the island for a long time, immediately understood what Xin Li was saying.
"The weather has been a bit strange lately, but don't worry, my granary is upstairs anyway."
That's where the mother and her two children live; it's relatively safe, and they can easily escape if anything happens.
Living on the first floor means you might get cornered downstairs if you encounter a petty thief, so it's not very safe.
Especially since Aunt Yang's family consists of only a mother and her two children, they are vulnerable to being wiped out if they encounter any danger on the first floor.
Those living on the second floor can run away quickly if they notice anything amiss.
"That's good."
Xinli wasn't sure if things would change, but seeing how much Aunt Yang treasured the grain, she figured it was always better to be cautious.
"Then I'll head back now. If anything comes up later, just have Xiaohua come find me directly."
Aunt Yang hadn't expected her relationship with Xin Li to get better and better. She nodded with emotion and said, "Okay, you should go back now."
Everyone rushed back from outside today, and Aunt Yang didn't prepare any food at home, so she simply didn't leave any for them.
After all, she knew that when He Mingzhou was not around, Xin Li would go to Sister Lu's house for a free meal. It would be better to let her go back and eat first since it would take so long for her to stay at her house.
As for what happened today, she will find another opportunity to formally thank her later.
Xinli was unaware of Aunt Yang's thoughts; she was indeed hungry, and she even ran back home.
Sure enough, Zhang Jinhua was peeking out from the doorway: "Why are you only coming back now!"
"Are you hungry? Come on, I've kept your food warm."
Xin Li responded and ran over to sit down by the stove in Zhang Jinhua's house: "I ran into some trouble today, that's why I came back late."
While serving rice to Xinli, Zhang Jinhua asked curiously, "What happened?"
Xinli then told her what had happened at the dock.
Zhang Jinhua frowned upon hearing this: "Such a thing is true? Those people are far too arrogant."
"Are you all alright?"
"Aunt Yang was dragged on for a long time and has some injuries, but I'm fine."
Zhang Jinhua sighed: "There are still many people who are starving and lazy, and they will do such despicable things just for food."
"If you encounter this, don't be polite, just take it to the police station."
"These people are bullies who prey on the weak and fear the strong. If you stand up for yourself, they'll back down."
Xinli nodded: "I understand."
After finishing her meal, she went home to rest.
The next day when she woke up, she found that the weather outside was not good; it was gloomy and looked like it was going to rain.
She quickly got dressed and went to the beach, where she saw many people frantically searching for seafood.
"It looks like it's going to rain heavily today, so don't be greedy. Once it starts raining, go home as soon as possible."
Too many people die at the beach every year, and the old folks always give them earnest advice.
Xinli also went down to retrieve some things, and not long after she came ashore, raindrops began to fall heavily on her head.
