Chapter Twenty-Eight: Catching Chickens
Xin Li raised an eyebrow: "Chopping a melon can delay your work? You don't seem very capable at housework. Do you usually get enough to eat?"
Zhang Chen: "..."
This was the first time he had ever been looked down upon like this, and his face turned extremely pale.
Xin Li clapped her hands with a smile: "I was just kidding with you guys. What do you want me to do for you?"
Zhang Chen frowned and glanced at Xin Li.
This person is clearly unpredictable; if she really refuses to help, he really can't do anything about it.
Zhang Chen had expected Xin Li to refuse, but he couldn't figure out why she had retorted but then agreed to help.
She acted as if she knew they were plotting against her, deliberately trying to disgust them while casually offering a condescending remark, as if she intended to willingly fall into their trap.
Is this woman alright?
Zhang Chen felt that he couldn't understand her at all.
Xin Li noticed Zhang Chen's somewhat confused gaze and smiled slightly.
What a joke! They dared to scheme against her; of course, she wouldn't let them get away with it.
But Zhang Chen is like a venomous snake lurking behind Xu Haiyu.
If she doesn't teach him a lesson right away, he'll always be lurking in the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to strike.
Xin Li doesn't like to dawdle. Since the other party has taken the initiative, she won't hesitate to grab his neck and hit him.
"What's wrong? Haven't you made up your mind yet?"
Xinli spread her hands: "Then I'll continue resting?"
"Well, it's like this. After all, you're a distinguished guest. I was originally thinking of catching a chicken, since we don't have any decent meat dishes at home. The only good thing is that the chickens we raise are quite good, and the meat isn't dry; they're at their tenderest right now. But I'm going to cut the melon for you now, so I can't go catch a chicken. I'll have to trouble you to do it. You can pick whichever one you like."
Xinli thought these people were going to do something, but she didn't expect them to just ask her to catch chickens.
In the apocalypse, she could easily twist the head of a zombie; was she afraid of a chicken?
Xinli's eyes lit up and she immediately understood what they were thinking. She nodded and agreed, "Okay, then I'll go pick one myself."
Seeing Xin Li's fearless ignorance, Zhang Chen grinned and said, "Then hurry up and go. I'll boil the water, and when you catch the chicken, I'll put it in the pot and pluck its feathers."
"I don't know where you keep your chickens. Why don't you have Xu Haiyu take me there?"
Zhang Chen hesitated, but Xu Haiyu said directly, "Okay, I'll take you!"
Zhang Chen glanced at Xu Haiyu, and when she gave him a smug wink, he immediately realized that Xu Haiyu knew his intentions.
"Alright, then you two go and come back quickly, let's cook and eat as soon as possible."
"Don't worry, I'll definitely be back soon. I just don't know if Xinli will catch chickens. It would be bad if it took too long."
"I'm a little hungry."
Xin Li pretended not to notice the probing in Xu Haiyu's words, nodded and said, "I also hope to eat soon. Let's go."
Xu Haiyu felt like he had punched a cotton ball, and his expression was displeased.
But thinking about how embarrassing Xinli would be, she couldn't help but want to laugh.
"Let's go then."
After saying that, she took the initiative to walk ahead.
Xinli followed.
The sight of the two people walking one in front of the other attracted a lot of attention.
Someone asked curiously, "Xiaoyu, weren't you supposed to have dinner at Dr. Zhang Chen's house today? What are you doing here?"
"Zhang Chen said he wanted to take good care of Sister-in-law Xin, so he sent us to catch a chicken."
Everyone's expression changed drastically upon hearing this: "You want to send just the two of you?"
Xu Haiyu nodded: "Yes."
She didn't say directly that Zhang Chen sent Xin Li.
After all, it sounds like Zhang Chen bullied Xin Li and deliberately sent her there.
Saying that the two of them are together is to exclude Zhang Chen.
"Oh, then you guys be careful."
Listening to the meaningful looks and expressions of those people, Xin Li probably guessed that catching chickens was not so simple.
Sure enough, not long after she walked out, Xin Li heard the people behind her talking about whether or not to inform He Mingzhou.
Now that you mention it, Xinli is genuinely curious.
What could be so serious that they would go to He Mingzhou to complain?
Are those chickens incredibly strong, like the mutated creatures of the apocalypse?
Surely not, this is just a remote island, not some magical island.
Xinli didn't take what those people said to heart, but they became more and more worried.
In the end, feeling guilty, they still sent one person to find He Mingzhou.
"Did Xinli go catch Zhang Chen's chickens?"
He Mingzhou was having dinner at Zhang Jinhua's house when he heard this and immediately stood up.
Zhang Jinhua was also surprised: "Why would you let her go for no reason?"
The messenger had a very strange expression.
He just said that Xin Li and Xu Haiyu went to catch chickens together, so why did both of them selectively ignore Xu Haiyu?
"I guess Zhang Chen just said it casually, and they really went there like newborn calves unafraid of tigers."
Zhang Jinhua's expression changed drastically. He looked at He Mingzhou and said, "Xiao He, you must go and check on her quickly. Please don't let anything happen to Xinxin."
Since Xin Li comes from a wealthy family, she probably doesn't even recognize a chicken, so how could she possibly catch one?
Besides, everyone knows what's going on with Zhang Chen's chicken.
Zhang Jinhua already suspected Zhang Chen had ill intentions, and now that he knew about this whole affair, he was even more convinced that Zhang Chen had set up a trap.
This Zhang Chen!
Zhang Jinhua had always felt that Zhang Chen had a bad temper, but since there was a shortage of doctors on the island, he was afraid that if he pushed Zhang Chen too far, Zhang Chen would just leave.
When no one on the island has a doctor to treat their illnesses, those people will definitely hate her.
But Zhang Jinhua simply couldn't bear what had happened today.
"I remember Zhang Chen's uncle is your boss, right?"
He Mingzhou was taken aback by Zhang Jinhua's question, but quickly understood what Zhang Jinhua meant. He nodded slightly and said to Zhang Jinhua, "I will handle this matter."
"Just keep it in mind."
He Mingzhou responded and asked the man to confirm that Xin Li and the others had gone to the chicken coop before striding away.
On the other side, Xin Li followed behind Xu Haiyu, her gaze becoming increasingly strange as they walked.
"Why did Zhang Chen build the chicken coop so far away? It usually takes ten minutes to walk there just to catch a chicken to eat."
"He wouldn't even know if someone stole his chickens and eggs."
Xu Haiyu frowned in disgust: "Who would steal it?"
"Do you know about Zhang Chen's chickens—"
Xin Li raised an eyebrow, looking at Xu Haiyu with a teasing smile: "What's wrong with his chicken?"
Xu Haiyu almost let slip the secret, and was furious. She vented her anger on Xin Li: "You think too badly of the people on the island. Who would be short of an egg? Why would they need to steal chickens? Xin Li, this isn't Shanghai. The people here are all very nice."
Xin Li raised an eyebrow and said meaningfully, "Not all of them, are they?"
Xu Haiyu felt as if she had been shot in the knee. She glared fiercely at Xin Li and stopped outside a fence gate: "We're here. Go and catch them!"
