Chapter 27: The Aftermath of the Hostage

Shen Hongmei saw Yan Shuhua holding a mousetrap and seemed very happy, so she couldn't help but ask, "Shuhua, what did Jinchu tell you?"

"He didn't say anything. He just said thank you for helping him recover." Yan Shuhua was in a good mood and smiled when she spoke. Shen Hongmei stretched out her arm and poked her: "You little bitch, with that look in your eyes and expression, do you think mom doesn't know what you're thinking? You were like this when you went to the movies with Dagang before."

"Mom, can you please not mention Dagang?" Yan Shuhua rolled his eyes at her, and Shen Hongmei quickly changed her words: "Okay, okay, okay, I won't say it, I won't say it, hurry up, quickly pack the towel and send it to Jinchu."

"Mom said we'd give him a surprise, but you said everything."

Shen Hongmei had wanted to give him a surprise, but she couldn't help herself, so she just said it all at once. Who would have thought it would turn out like this! "Okay, okay, stop it. Turn off the lights. The electricity bill is expensive." Shen Hongmei quickly put away the wool, and then she and her daughter fell asleep in bed.

The next morning, Song Yan heard the broadcast announcing that it was time to go to work. He was woken up from his sound sleep. Yan Shuhua reported a job to Song Yan in the captain's name as his cousin.

Song Yan was not tall and was skinny. The production team leader saw that he was not a work-hardened person and gave a conclusion: "He can only be considered 70%."

"I'm a grown man, but I only get seven points. That's unreasonable, isn't it?" Song Yan had originally said with his chest puffed out that he would definitely get a perfect score of ten, but he was not convinced when he heard the captain say that.

The captain said without further ado: "Then I'll give you a shovel. If you can turn the soil over well, I'll give you ten points."

Song Yan was very strong, and he flipped the pages well. He was also very skillful in carrying things, and his movements were also very agile. The captain was very satisfied: "Shuhua, your cousin did a great job, very good, let's go, go, go."

Many people were preparing to go to the farmland with various tools. When Yan Shuhua turned around, she saw Li Dagang.  He was wearing gray clothes, a hat, and a hoe on his shoulder. He walked over with a few young men of about the same age. Probably because of what he said that day, he was embarrassed. Li Dagang lowered his head and walked away from her eyes as if he didn't see her.

Yan Shuhua was still wondering what to do and what to say to him. Seeing him like this, she felt very happy. It would be best if there was no interaction. She was about to rush back, but she met the person she hated the most, Shen Mengmeng. As soon as she came up, she started to scold Yan Shuhua without showing any mercy.

"Yan Shuhua, you should stay away from Dagang. Dagang was doing his job well, but because of you, he was sent to the most barren land to dig soil."

Shen Mengmeng also had to earn work points like ordinary people, but because her uncle was the village chief, she got a position as a supervisor through this relationship. This position was very easy. At least she didn't have to be covered in dust, work as hard as an ox, or rush to work like others. Instead, she could leisurely criticize Yan Shuhua here.

Others would cut their hair short when going to work, but she only wore two braids every day, wore clean clothes, and even her pair of white shoes were not dirty.

"Is it because of the meat ticket? I didn't start that thing." Yan Shuhua retorted, "I went to exchange for some meat, but you couldn't stand it, so you made trouble for me and accused me of stealing. In the end, you dragged Dagang into it. And you are blaming me for everything?"

"It's your fault." Shen Mengmeng asked Huang Haijiang for help, but he was very angry and said he would teach Li Dagang a lesson. In fact, his other intention was to give Yan Shuhua a warning and let her know that the identity of village chief has unshakable power in the village.

"It's my fault, it's my fault, can you please move aside?" You can't afford to offend such a person, but you can afford to avoid him.

Shen Mengmeng saw that there were people all around her and thought there was no need to make a scene with her, so she just stepped aside and let her go. Some villagers nearby saw this and thought that Yan Shuhua was really ungrateful.

"Anyway, Yan Shuhua is just that kind of person. He says he doesn't care about Dagang, but he still accepts his kindness. This kind of person is simply a disgrace to our production team."

"But it's also strange. When did a cousin appear in Yan Shuhua's family?"

"Who knows? Never mind, never mind, let's get to work. If you're late, you'll only be credited with half a day's work."

Yan Shuhua hurried to the mountain to collect herbs, but met a girl who was sleeping on the ground halfway. The girl looked about sixteen or seventeen years old. Yan Shuhua thought it was because her blood sugar was too low, so he quickly took out a few White Rabbit candies that Mrs. Xiao had given her from his pocket, peeled one and gave it to her.

After she finished eating the candy, she quickly came to her senses: "Thank you..."

The girl who fainted was called Li Mei. She looked very simple and honest. She was carrying a basket on her shoulders. Because she fell, many herbs fell out. Her first reaction when she woke up was to pick up the herbs and put them in the basket.

"Why did you faint here?"

Li Mei was a little embarrassed to say the reason for her fainting, because she did not have breakfast and then climbed over a mountain. She might be too tired, which caused low blood sugar and she fainted immediately. If she had not met Yan Shuhua today, she didn't know whether she could have returned home alive.

"You're also going up the mountain to collect herbs?" Yan Shuhua smelled a strong herbal scent, and there were a lot of herbs in her backpack. This time, Li Mei answered Yan Shuhua's question directly: "Well, my mother has been coughing and dizzy these past two days, so I came up to collect some herbs for her."

"Do you know how to recognize medicine?" Yan Shuhua found it hard to believe that such a young girl could actually recognize herbs. After all, this era and the future were different.

"Yes, I recognize him." Li Mei explained, "My father was a barefoot doctor, but he...died of illness last year."

Li Mei was very sad when she talked about her father. Yan Shuhua didn't want to talk about her sad past. Seeing that her face was still pale, he quickly took the backpack from her and said, "You should not stay here with your hypoglycemia. I will take you down the mountain first, and then I will go to see your mother's condition."

"I'd rather not."

"I know some medical knowledge. I can help you see what disease your mother has." Yan Shuhua's enthusiasm made Li Mei feel embarrassed to refuse for a moment, so she could only nod.
