Chapter 66
In the middle of the night, Yingxiang was exhausted, but Wen Shi still showed no sign of stopping. She tried to get him to stop and go to sleep, struggling to kick him, but it was all in vain.
A moment later, Wen Shi sat up, his eyes filled with lust, his breathing rapid. He revealed his lean and broad chest and pulled Yingxiang down a little.
"My wife, I want more."
Wen Shi leaned down again, his tone unusually domineering. He gently tidied the stray hairs on his wife's cheek with his large, well-defined hands, and then kissed her red lips.
"What is that fragrance you smell like? It's so alluring."
"This bed isn't big; we'll need to get a bigger one later."
With tears in her eyes, Yingxiang bit Wen Shi in anger when she heard his last words, called him a bastard, and turned her head away.
The next morning, if it weren't for the child's sudden intrusion, the two would still be fast asleep. The clothes scattered on the floor had already been tidied up by Wen Shi and thrown aside. Before going to sleep, he dressed them both in their nightgowns.
Yingxiang was still fast asleep. She watched as her son climbed up using both his hands and feet, trying to squeeze into the middle. She didn't say anything, after all, he was her own son. She was now barely able to eat her fill.
"Father, Mother."
"Be good, Daddy's going to the kitchen to cook. You and Mommy can sleep a little longer, and don't disturb her."
The child nodded as if he understood, then snuggled closer to Yingxiang and closed his little eyes.
Yingxiang was exhausted and fell into a deep sleep. She slowly woke up in the afternoon. When she saw Wenshi sitting in the chair, she glared at him and turned her head away, not wanting to pay any attention to him at all.
The couple were reunited after a long separation, but he went too far; he had never acted like this before.
Wen Shi was fiddling with the creams on her dressing table, picking them up one by one and putting them down. When he saw that she had woken up, he immediately sat up.
He remained as calm as ever, while Yingxiang glared at him angrily, refusing to speak to him.
"I'll help you put it on."
She didn't feel embarrassed at all when she smelled it; in fact, she smiled and took the opportunity to steal another fragrance.
"I've already started packing. Let's get ready to leave the day after tomorrow."
Yingxiang didn't speak or look at him. Seeing that Wen Shi was about to hug her again, she subconsciously dodged to the side, not expecting him to anticipate her actions. He took the initiative and hugged her tightly in his arms.
"It was my fault."
Don't be angry.
"You'll sleep with your son tonight."
"That won't do."
He instinctively refused, but his arm was suddenly pinched again. He smiled, not angry at all.
"We'll talk about it when the time comes."
Despite her discomfort, Yingxiang ate and drank her fill, then rested. When she couldn't sleep, she read a book. Xiao Leqian played in the yard, and Wen Shi watched over him. She wasn't worried at all.
Next, Wen Shi began packing his belongings and looking for a security escort agency. Things went relatively smoothly. He entrusted the sheep to his neighbor's care again. To express his gratitude, Wen Shi gave his neighbor two old hens, and the neighbor was happy to help him take care of them, since it wasn't a free service.
Yingxiang rested for two days, and the two did not sleep separately. Fortunately, he did not do anything reckless.
On the day of departure, we had a lot of things, and our suitcases were packed full. We definitely wouldn't return the house. If we didn't pass the exam, we would have to study for another three years. If we passed, we would have to come back to thank our teachers, and we could deal with it then. We could leave the things for now and not worry about a few more months.
The exams were in August, and the results were released in September. The weather wasn't cold then.
The two of them didn't bring many clothes. The weather was still warm, and shirts and skirts didn't take up much space. However, they still needed to bring two slightly thicker clothes in case they needed them.
Yingxiang had Wenshi take the remaining hens out to sell them for money.
Adding the two taels of silver that Wen Shi brought back this time, she counted her money and found that she hadn't lost much and it was enough. Just in case, it was best to keep all the money with her.
If she's not home and her house gets burgled, then all her previous work would have been for nothing.
Thinking of this, Yingxiang quickly put all the money into the box without hesitation.
"Sweetie, you can just choose one."
Seeing her son stuffing all his toys into the box, Yingxiang quickly stopped him. The little guy seemed to understand, staring at her with his big eyes, not moving at all.
He was still humming and hawing, clearly unwilling.
Yingxiang's lips moved slightly.
"Here's what you'll do: pick two things. Your parents are taking you out to play, and Mom will buy you some new ones later."
Seeing her son nod, Yingxiang smiled helplessly. This child was quite smart. She had often heard people say that children are young and don't understand things, so there's no need to worry about them and you can teach them when they're older. But after raising a child herself, she deeply understood the saying that children may be young, but they are not stupid.
Don't let his lack of eloquence fool you; he's incredibly perceptive when it comes to certain things. If you try to talk to him and he doesn't like it, he'll just pretend he doesn't understand and keep doing his own thing, or stand there and act cute and silly.
Two days later, everything was ready, and the family of three set off for the prefectural city. In the carriage, the little guy squatted down and ate milk cake, and now there was no need for Wen Shi to help him break the cake into crumbs.
He ate with great relish, occasionally smiling at Yingxiang and then glancing at Wenshi.
It wasn't an official road, so it wasn't very smooth. The caravan we were with seemed to be in a hurry, traveling day and night. Fortunately, it only took three days to get them to their destination.
For the past few days, there have been long queues at the city gate. Many of the men are well-dressed, carrying boxes, baskets, or shoulder poles. They have bedding in front and their study supplies in the back. Wen Shi was not surprised when he saw these people; they must all be here to take the imperial examination. He was holding his son in one arm and carrying a box in the other.
It was just past noon, and the sun was blazing. Yingxiang felt like she was about to melt from the heat, but there were too many people in line ahead of her, so they had no choice but to wait.
It was customary to check people upon entering the city. They were told that they had identities and travel permits. After nearly an hour, it was finally their turn.
Wen Shi took out the household registration documents and travel permits for his family of three from his pocket and handed them to the city guard. The soldier had a dark face. Such weather was really annoying. In recent days, there were more and more people. However, the person in front of him seemed a bit strange.
He knew about the exam this year, but it was extremely rare to see someone bring their whole family along; this was the first time he had ever seen one in all these years.
The soldier was lean and wiry, and he carefully examined the three men's documents and travel permits.
He paid special attention to Yingxiang's and the child's items to make sure they were genuine before he felt at ease.
Although this person may become an official in the future, he hasn't reached that point yet, and they also have duties to perform and cannot slack off.
"Alright, let's go in."
Wen Shi nodded, packed his things, and gestured for Yingxiang to go in first.
Travel permits and such things have to be obtained from the government, but Yingxiang has never gone there. She always runs these things when she hears about them. When she went back home for the New Year last year, her child had already been born. Although the child was born in Songshan Prefecture, the child's household registration was under the father's name.
When he went back to register, he immediately got travel permits for his family of three. He didn't intend to leave his wife and child at home, and the official seal of the government was naturally genuine.
"Wife, when I go to take the exam, you can take the children for a stroll around the city, but it's best not to go out. If you do go out, remember to keep your travel permits and such, as they'll be checking very strictly lately."
Wen Shi gave a serious warning, and the two walked forward. Yingxiang was sweating profusely from the heat. She wiped her sweat with a handkerchief while looking at the shops around her.
"My child and I won't leave the city. We'll talk about it after you finish your exam."
Back in Songshan Prefecture, there weren't so many problems, but things were different then than they are now.
"Husband, let's quickly find an inn, no, let's find a place to eat first."
The streets of the prefectural city were bustling with people and vendors, and the shops on both sides were filled with people coming and going. Yingxiang was both hungry and hot.
She glanced around and, since it wasn't her first time visiting the prefectural city, she wasn't worried. The two of them each carried a suitcase, and Wen Shi was also holding the child.
When Leqian heard her mother say she was hungry, she subconsciously touched her own stomach and looked at her father, who hadn't been eating well these past few days either.
He's over a year old, so breast milk isn't that important anymore; we can wean him off it. These past few days, I've been feeding him cakes and pastries. It's the same with Yingxiang and Wenshi; no matter how delicious they are, they don't want to eat them after a few days.
Right now, Yingxiang was only thinking about eating rice and stir-fried dishes. The two of them were not familiar with this part of the city. After walking through several streets, they saw a restaurant. Wen Shi looked at the somewhat old signboard and the number of customers inside, and gestured for Yingxiang to come in with him.
As soon as Yingxiang stepped inside, the aroma of food wafted over. There were quite a few people inside, but fortunately there were empty seats in the corner. After the family of three sat down, the waiter quickly brought over the menu.
"Hello, sir/madam, what would you like to eat? Here is the menu."
He had a white cotton cloth draped over the back of his neck and respectfully handed the menu to Wen Shi, who handed it directly to his wife without even looking at it.
He was taken aback, but still had a smile on his face as he turned to look at Yingxiang with a beaming smile.
Yingxiang picked up the menu and started flipping through it. When she came in, she saw that almost every table had roast duck. She quickly glanced at the menu and then said, "One roast duck, one serving of steamed meat, one plate of bok choy, three bowls of rice, and a pot of tea."
"Alright, please wait a moment, sir."
The waiter was quick; not long after he took the menu, the rice and roast duck arrived.
"This roast duck must have been roasted in advance, but it looks really delicious."
Yingxiang looked at the glistening roast duck and couldn't help but swallow hard.
"Husband, take out half of his rice and you can eat it."
The child is still young, so even if he can eat, I don't dare to give him too much, as indigestion can cause fever in children.
"good."
I had heard from older people before that children shouldn't be fed too much, as it can cause indigestion and illness; as long as they aren't hungry, it's fine.
He originally wanted to give it to his wife, Yingxiang, but seeing that she had a large bowl and it was enough for her, she politely declined.
She picked up a duck leg and placed it on her rice. As soon as she took a bite, the aroma of the duck meat filled her mouth. She nodded unconsciously; it was really delicious.
"Remember to peel off the skin, and then mix some meat with rice."
The child sat opposite Wen Shi. Wen Shi nodded and glanced at the little boy beside him. Unsurprisingly, this was the first time he had eaten out with his parents.
I smelled the fragrance and mixed some meat into his rice. The child was very well-behaved throughout, looking around curiously without making a fuss.
Once the rice was mixed, he picked up his spoon and began to eat eagerly.
Wen Shi wanted to give her the other duck leg as well, but Ying Xiang quickly refused, indicating that he should eat it himself. Then two meat dishes were served, along with soup. Ying Xiang ate quickly, and after she was full, she served her son some food and meat, indicating that Wen Shi should just eat his own.
The tea was sweet and refreshing, and the two drank several cups to quench their thirst and cut through the greasiness. Since the child couldn't drink it, they asked him for a bowl of cold boiled water.
Seeing him eating with such relish, Wen Shi glanced at his wife and then said, "You've had a hard time these past few days."
Yingxiang nodded, thankfully the child was growing up.
