Chapter Sixty-Eight
On this day, Hui, who was taking Bai Yutuan to the dock, missed her mother and did not immediately return to Tiger Roar Mountain after finishing her business. Instead, she took a road to Pagoda Mountain.
Because of the Anmin Festival, Pei Xianhui was frightened and screamed helplessly in her room, unable to calm down for a long time.
Because of this, little Hui was extremely worried and could not bear to leave her mother. She waited silently in front of her room for a long time.
Only after the crowd outside dispersed did Pei Xianhui finally calm down and fall asleep peacefully in bed with the help of her maids. Only when she heard her mother's calm and long breathing did she breathe a sigh of relief.
Just then, someone knocked on the door of the Taoist temple.
It was getting late. Pei Xianhui had been making a fuss all day and finally fell asleep. The maids, worried that she would be woken up, hurriedly refused to let her go.
The person who was knocking stopped knocking.
The maids waited for a while, and when they saw no further movement outside, they were relieved and returned to Pei Xianhui's room.
Only Hui quietly came to the front yard. His hearing was much more acute than that of the maids, so he heard an unexpected sound coming from the doorway.
—It is a precious pearl.
Why is Baozhu here? Does she know her mother too?
But, but Baozhu is clearly a demon! Hui was filled with doubt, forgetting that she had sworn before coming here that she would never show herself in front of people this time.
He climbed over the wall and looked towards the gate, where he indeed saw Baozhu's figure.
Hui was both puzzled and delighted. Just as she was about to call out to Baozhu, she discovered that there was another woman standing opposite her.
The woman turned around and saw him; her expression instantly turned ugly.
Hui's smile froze on his face. He recognized her; this woman was his mother's younger sister, whom he had met on the day he was born.
Hui still remembers every detail of that rainy night clearly.
There was not a trace of kindness in the woman's eyes when she looked at him. As soon as he closed his eyes, the hatred in her eyes would appear vividly before his eyes.
Baozhu, Pei Xuanji, and Hui stood frozen in front of the Taoist temple.
In a flash, Hui was the first to react, turning around and running away.
Without a second thought, Pei Xuanji chased after her. She even forgot that she hadn't brought her sword with her today and instinctively reached for the bladeless sword, seemingly wanting to kill Hui with it.
Baozhu felt a chill and reached out from behind to stop Pei Xuanji.
Seeing that Hui was about to disappear, Pei Xuanji angrily asked, "Why did you stop me?"
“What do you want to do to him? He’s just an innocent child,” Baozhu said incredulously.
You don't understand!
Pei Xuanji said, gritting her teeth as she tried to get away from Baozhu.
One wants to pursue, the other won't let go.
Pei Xuanji simply turned around, assumed a fighting stance, and made a feint.
Baozhu didn't really want to fight Pei Xuanji. When she saw Pei Xuanji swing her fist at her, she was stunned and dodged to the side. This gave Pei Xuanji the opportunity to escape and chase after Hui.
Baozhu had no choice but to follow.
As the sun was about to dip below the horizon, Hui stumbled and ran with his back to the setting sun. The woman followed closely behind him; she was so close that he could almost hear her breath on his ear.
Hui knew that if she relaxed even slightly, she would fall into her hands.
But he was just a small half-demon after all. He had been chased so far in a panic that his breathing was already disordered. When he passed through a bush, Hui did not see where he was standing. He stumbled and fell far away.
The next moment, Hui was lifted up in Pei Xuanji's hand.
Hui was so frightened that her teeth chattered, and she couldn't utter a single word of begging for mercy.
He saw Pei Xuanji staring intently at him with an expressionless face. Her expression was exactly the same as when he was born. Hui froze in fear and closed his eyes in despair.
But he didn't die. Baozhu, who was following behind, flashed forward and snatched the iris from Pei Xuanji's hand. She held him tightly in her arms and said in a deep voice, "Pei Qi, I don't know what happened, but this child did nothing."
“But he harmed my sister! If it weren’t for him, my sister wouldn’t be like this, my sister…” Pei Xuanji was extremely agitated, and tears streamed down her face as she spoke.
After Pei Xuanji finished speaking, Baozhu felt the little Hui in her arms suddenly tremble.
Baozhu patted his back reassuringly while pondering blankly.
She recalled Hui's account of her background and the most distinguished elder sister in Pei Xuanji's family. Baozhu understood why she had discovered all this, but how could she resolve it?
Pei Xuanji wiped her face, calmed down a bit, and said to Baozhu with a heavy nasal voice, "Baozhu, you don't understand what happened. Give him to me."
“Here you go, and what do you want to do with it?” Baozhu asked.
“I want…” Pei Xuanji was taken aback by the question.
Years later, she saw the child again. He had grown up and was very cute. Half of his face resembled Pei Xianhui, while the other half...
Pei Xuanji's mind went blank. She wanted to grab him and see him clearly, and then do something, but she couldn't figure it out for the time being.
Seeing that Pei Xuanji had lost her will to kill, Baozhu carefully observed her expression and slowly said, "Pei Qi, I'm not completely ignorant. I've heard him talk about his background before."
Upon hearing this, Pei Xuanji gave a bitter laugh and said, "He actually said that?"
This secret had been hidden in her heart for so long that a corner of her heart was almost festering, causing her to suffer so much pain that she couldn't sleep whenever she thought about it.
Unfortunately, Pei Xuanji couldn't confide in anyone, not even her own parents.
Madam Zeng knew nothing. She only thought that Pei Xianhui was not used to life in the palace and had lost her child. After her relationship with Sun San broke down, she asked to leave the palace. Every now and then, she would lament that her daughter was too spoiled, all because she had pampered her too much.
Every time Pei Xuanji heard these words, she felt as sad as ever, yet she couldn't even defend her sister.
She dared not imagine how her mother would react if she knew what her most beloved daughter had suffered, and what she had said.
This wound, finally revealed to the world, was laid bare before everyone. Pei Xuanji, with a self-destructive smile, wept as she looked at Baozhu and said, "Then do you know who that person is? That person..."
The person who hurt Pei Xianhui and caused all of this.
Pei Xuanji smiled, but large tears slid down her cheeks. She said softly, "We were just discussing how to bring him down."
Who is Pei Qi referring to? Is the person they are discussing Rong Qi?
Baozhu could hardly believe her ears. She murmured, "But isn't he a mortal?"
Pei Xuanji pointed to Hui in her arms and said, "Whether he is a mortal or not, what his true nature is, the evidence that can prove everything is now in your hands."
The sun finally disappeared completely, and darkness slowly descended everywhere.
Baozhu held Hui in her arms, remaining silent.
"Are you still unwilling to give him to me?" Pei Xuanji asked loudly, looking at Baozhu whose face was shrouded in darkness.
Baozhu withdrew her hand, hugged Hui tightly in her arms, and lowered her eyes, saying, "If I hand him over to you, what will happen to him?"
Pei Xuanji was taken aback. She remembered her sister's reaction when she saw the child, and she remembered the Emperor's expressionless face on that stormy night.
This child was born into the world unblessed, loved by no one. Perhaps at that time, he will only serve as evidence of evil, silently perishing in the injustice of fate.
Pei Xuanji did not answer Baozhu's question.
Baozhu took a step back and looked up at her friend.
Before today, she thought that the Baiyu Group case was the biggest rift between her and Pei Qi.
“I can’t hand him over to you.” Baozhu looked at Pei Xuanji tenderly and shook her head gently. “He’s a pitiful little demon. He’s not the one who caused all this.”
Pei Xuanji looked at Baozhu expressionlessly.
"I'm sorry, Pei Qi."
Baozhu took another step back, her eyes red and her voice trembling slightly: "I want to take him away."
Having said that, the pearl seemed to melt away and disappeared from Pei Xuanji's sight.
Pei Xuanji remained motionless and did not attempt to chase after him again.
She stared blankly at the spot where they had disappeared for a long, long time.
Hui buried his head in Baozhu's arms, and the scenery before his eyes rushed past.
This is the road to Tiger Roar Mountain. Hui knows that Baozhu wants to send him back to Lord Mountain Lord's side, where no one can harm him.
But Baozhu seemed to have forgotten to ask him.
Hui's fingers twitched, and she gently grasped Baozhu's clothes.
He asked in a low voice, "My mother's sister wants to take me away because that way she can bring down the person who hurt my mother, right?"
Baozhu was taken aback, slowed down, and lowered her head to comfort her, "But I won't hand you over. You're a good child, it's not your fault, there must be another way."
“But this is the fastest way, right?” Hui murmured.
Hui lowered his head, making it impossible for Baozhu to see his expression.
She had no choice but to stop and bend down to look at the little demon's face.
Baozhu saw the poor little half-demon frowning in pain, trying hard to swallow back the tears in his eyes.
What should she do? Baozhu was at a loss and tried to wipe Hui's tears. She stammered, "Don't cry."
Hui raised her head and asked innocently, "Would my mother be much better off if I had never appeared?"
Baozhu was speechless for a moment, unsure whether she should tell the truth.
The little demon, who was extremely good at reading people's expressions, understood a lot from Baozhu's expression. He smiled and said slowly, "Baozhu, thank you, but please send me back."
"If my death can cause that person to die as well, then everything that caused my mother pain will disappear."
Hui's eyes still shone brightly even as night fell.
He seemed to already see the expression on his mother's face at that time.
This was the last wild fruit Hui gave to his mother, and he thought that this time, his mother would definitely like it.
Please grant my request.
Hui looked at Baozhu and said earnestly.
