The spirits were asleep, lying in the stone coffins, their faces showing a forgivable expression.
There were also a few restless spirits that never slept walking around in front of it, sometimes passing through the walls, sometimes disappearing into the soil.
If sunlight were to reach this place, they would all be terrified.
"It's time to go out on patrol."
Billis used the excuse of patrolling to leave the bottom of the pit.
As Drewwater led them to the small house, he said, “The threat comes from the surface, and most of it happens at night.”
"When did it start?"
"About a month ago, it started as a small tremor, then it became a big tremor, until last week when we received a threatening letter from someone claiming to be the Demon King. You've definitely seen it; it's the one sent to Thompson."
How long will the tremors last?
"Sometimes it's short, sometimes it's long. One of our spirits went out to see it and never came back."
"Were all those collapsed stone tablets related to the tremors?"
"That must be it, otherwise who would climb into the cemetery in the middle of the night to cause trouble?"
Have you offended anyone?
"Sir, we are all honest people, living underground and avoiding the sunlight. Who could we possibly offend?"
"You've lived here for eight years?"
"Yes, we don't want to move to Black Mountain. We've heard the undead there are very unfriendly."
Through other conversations, Billis learned that Drewot had lived alone here for eight years, had a son living in the Black Mountains, and that his wife had probably been reincarnated into some other race and never returned.
Most of the undead creatures living in the valley, like him, were unwilling to move to other places because they would be ostracized wherever they went; this was the fate of the undead.
Drewot also stated that he and his clan would never leave the cemetery, even if they were given more land benefits.
Billis also obtained a map of the valley from Drewot, with red crosses marking the most severely damaged areas.
Besides the cemetery, other things were also damaged to varying degrees, such as trees, houses, rocks, and offerings.
It appears to be some kind of indiscriminate attack warning, causing widespread damage to the valley.
After arriving on the surface, Billy and his group bid farewell to Drewot and decided to rest for the night at the inn outside the valley before returning the next day to split up.
That night, even while they were staying at the inn, they could hear strange cries coming from the direction of the valley, somewhat like demons from hell ravaging the valley.
Billis thought of the anonymous letter in the threatening letter. Could there really be a demon king?
The next morning, the three of them headed to the valley.
They discovered a huge rock at the outlet of the stream, which had probably rolled down from the waterfall cliff and blocked the outlet, causing the stream to overflow. A large pile of foul-smelling things were floating in the pond, which, upon closer inspection, turned out to be offerings from the cemetery.
Did someone move the stones here overnight?
There were no drag marks upstream of the stream, so it was clear that the stones were not moved by human hands.
The three were each responsible for one of the three areas—east, west, and north—and began searching for suspicious points.
Billis is in charge of the grove of trees to the north.
It was less a forest and more a desolate garden, surrounded by scattered shrubs, with apple trees further in and wooden houses built on a few rather tall trees.
Billy climbed up and took a look. Inside the cabin were abandoned air pumps, tires, and rusty buckets. Everything smelled musty, indicating that the valley used to be inhabited, but for some reason, people had moved away.
Further in, the leaves became somewhat eerie, and insects living in the shadows crawled out of one gray pit after another and burrowed into another equally foul-smelling gray pit.
At this moment, creatures that did not belong under the sunlight appeared.
A ghost with only an empty form hugged a sapling three times with both hands, each time holding it to its chest. When it saw Billy, it smiled at him and gestured for him to come over.
Billis hesitated for a moment, but finally followed.
The spirits had no feet, yet they could pass directly through trees, so they moved very quickly. Beris had no choice but to go around the tree trunks.
They arrived at the heart of the forest, where a giant, long-dead sequoia stood. The tree was about fifty meters tall, and climbing its trunk was enough to see the entire forest.
The spirit couldn't speak; it pointed to the treetops and then to the ground.
Billy immediately understood and asked, "You want me to see something, but I have to climb a tree to see it?"
The ghost nodded with a smile.
The dead tree trunk has many cracks, making it easy to climb up.
Billis climbed only thirty meters before discovering numerous ash pits on the ground, all arranged in a regular pattern.
Climb another ten meters, and you'll see that the ash pits form a ring.
There are three rings in total. The inner ring gives the impression that a physical entity once existed, the middle ring tends to resemble a series of texts, and the outer ring is a fairly precise closed circle.
Billis now understood that what the ghost had shown him was this matrix.
Moreover, this matrix must have some connection to things that scare away cemeteries.
It is alive, and you can feel the continuous flow of magical matter emanating from the matrix.
Billis turned on his phone.
Can you hear me?
"I can hear you."
"Guess what I found in the woods?"
"A magic matrix?"
"How do you know? Have you also discovered the magic matrix?"
“I’m at an abandoned ranch, and there’s a magic matrix here too,” Lisa said.
“I’ve dived into the pond, and there’s a magic matrix at the bottom,” Mia said.
The fact that three magic matrices were located simultaneously in three directions of the valley suggests that they were prepared in advance for some purpose.
What special powers might be contained within the magic matrix?
The wind is picking up.
It was just a gentle breeze, yet all the leaves were bending to one side.
Billis put his hand to his forehead and looked toward the pond and pasture, but the pasture was too far away to see clearly.
Those three ponds were quite beautiful, covered with a thin purple mist, reflecting giant trees that formed a forest, and the water was as clear as a mirror.
Why is the water so calm? Didn't the wind pick up?
Billy seemed to have noticed something and was about to report it when the wind in the grove grew stronger, while the pond remained calm.
This must be a wind-based matrix!
Billy tried to get down from the tree, but he couldn't. It was as if his feet were on a floating wooden plank, and an upward force was lifting him up.
It's a tornado!
The soil was churned up, tree trunks snapped, and countless leaves rained down like bullets and arrows at faces.
Billy was barely able to open his eyes. He tried to hold onto the branches, but most of them were dead and couldn't support his weight. The wind blew him from one tree to another, and then from one tree to the next.
Over and over again, the world spins.
"Darling! Can you hear me? I've been attacked!"
"what happen?"
"This is a wind magic matrix. I think I accidentally triggered the switch. My body is about to be torn apart by the tornado!"
"Hang in there! I'm coming!"
"I'm about to fall apart!"
The walkie-talkie was blown away by the wind, and I couldn't open my mouth.
The thick wooden stake was uprooted and slammed into Billis's face. Billis let go of the stake and floated to another tree, thus avoiding it.
The magic matrix is glowing, and even stronger winds will appear.
Billy had a hallucination in the wind, as if he saw tombstones engraved with names spinning faster than any other creation.
Now I finally understand where the obsidian stele that was stuck on the track yesterday came from.
I couldn't breathe properly; even moving my lips felt like being struck by lightning, a burning, unbearable pain.
Billis gave up his chance to survive, let go, and his limbs flew to the center of the vortex, rising higher and higher.
Almost instantly, it was as if a shooting star streaked across the sky and carried him away.
A pair of bright red wings covered Irencel like a cloak, the wings stirring the air and appearing to be woven from red silk with gold trim.
Billis hugged Lisa's lower abdomen, his gaze clearly no longer directed towards her.
"Hang in there a little longer."
"Slow down! Slow down! I'm about to fall!"
Lisa flew as high as she could, and the wind behind her seemed to be able to catch up with her on its own.
"Hold on tight, I have to get rid of it!"
"I can't see anything!"
"It's best to keep your mouth closed, or you might bite your tongue!"
"Honey! You're flying too fast, I can hardly keep up!"
Billis heard his own panting growing fainter and fainter, his ears ringing, and his hands slipped down to his calves.
Lisa hooked her tail around him to keep from falling.
Ahead, there were many migratory birds flying at the same height, arranged in neat rows. Billy gradually got used to this height and came to like the crispy, fragrant taste.
"Don't touch me like that, you idiot!"
