Chapter 35: Entry-level Cooking

Saturday.

It's a beautiful day.

The hospital was a little more relaxed than usual.

When I walked out, I saw two nurses standing there with their hands in their pockets, chatting face to face under the roses at the door.

I don't know what one of the nurses said, but the other nurse bent over with laughter.

Xiao Qi took a look and continued to go out. Suddenly, the strong smell of the hospital made her feel unwell.

Walk out in a hurry.

In the hospital, nurses are envied and respected by my aunt and other caregivers.

Everyone thinks that nurses are good and that they, the care workers, do all the dirty and tiring work.

However, the students in Xiaoqi's class look down on nurses. They are from a key high school and normally take the undergraduate entrance exam. Nurses usually graduate from a junior college in nursing school. There is a chain of contempt between them.

As usual, Xiaoqi walked to the library with his schoolbag on his back.

On the way, I looked at the interface in front of me:

There are only 4 days left for the memory buff, 5 days left for the language sense buff, and 28 days left for the swimming buff.

Added long-distance running skills, singing skills, increased strength, longer eyelashes, vision correction, teeth correction, and even an additional enhanced sense of smell. What is the use of this?

I habitually pushed my glasses up and found that they were empty. I no longer needed glasses.

The world seemed a little clearer and brighter.

When I arrived at the library, I found that there was someone sitting at my old seat. Maybe it was because it was the weekend, so there were more people in the library.

Xiaoqi continued to look for an original English book "To Kill a Mockingbird".

In fact, Xiaoqi was a little confused when looking for the book.

She suddenly felt a little depressed today, and her mood was inexplicably low.

Even the smiles of the two young nurses at the hospital entrance did not make her happy.

She felt that her behavior of coming to the library to read books was more like a formalism, but she also felt that if she didn't read books, her head would be empty and she would feel like nothing.

I haven't read this book before, but I have heard of it.

I picked up the book and an English dictionary, then found a corner that was close to the trash can, so it was empty.

Not far away, there were a few parents reading with their children. The children were twisting their butts and couldn't sit still at all. They looked around and disturbed others from time to time.

Xiaoqi was quite envious of that child. She had never had the experience of coming to the library with her father. Her father had endless work to do, and when he occasionally went to the city, he had to calculate the time to take the bus back. He would never accompany her to the library to read.

It feels like two different worlds.

But I can sit in the library and read books because of my father's hard work behind the scenes.

After she sat down and opened the book, her somewhat restless heart gradually calmed down.

At the beginning, it took me a long time to read one page and to check the dictionary, but gradually I became faster.

At first there were some sounds of children running around, but soon these sounds disappeared.

This is a novel published in 1960, which is several decades ago. However, classics are probably what remain after being washed away by time.

She followed the protagonist of the book and entered that world.

At first it was just a happy family, seemingly just like hers, with its own troubles and interesting things.

But as the story unfolds, it becomes more complicated.

The protagonist's father is a lawyer who defended a black man who was falsely accused of raping a white girl. Although he found evidence to prove his innocence, the black man was still convicted due to the jury's prejudice.

Because of defending black people, the protagonist's family also underwent tremendous changes.

The protagonist is ridiculed and excluded at school.

This story was written a little too early, and some of the sentences are not easy to understand.

But after reading this story, Su Xiaoqi actually felt that he could relate to a lot of it, because as a student from a poor family in the mountains, he was still very sensitive psychologically.

In real life, although there are no such direct and extreme words as in books, contempt does exist.

What she remembers most vividly is that her homeroom teacher once talked to her, hoping that she would study hard and not focus too much on her appearance.

In fact, she was wearing a new army green T-shirt and khaki shorts, and the whole set of clothes cost only more than 70 yuan.

The head teacher was a middle-aged man. She was very embarrassed and her face turned red.

Compared with the other boarders, she was probably wearing newer clothes. She felt ashamed and felt that the entire sky above her head was gray.

But again, the head teacher probably wouldn't say this to other students, because most students dress better than Su Xiaoqi.

Because she had applied for hardship allowance from the school, in the eyes of the teacher, she should be treated like a poor student, but not like this.

Actually, she is just a little girl who wants to wear something nicer and newer.

This vanity made her embarrassed and uncomfortable because of a slight criticism from the teacher.

Although it was insignificant compared to the prejudice in the story, it was a very big thing for Su Xiaoqi. It seemed that from then on, she was embarrassed to walk with her chest held high, especially in front of the teacher, she always kept her head down.

But in fact, at the beginning, she was not such an inferior and introverted girl.

She grew up in Gumula Village. The girls there all love to laugh loudly and speak in clear voices like singing.

But this kind of campus life made her become inferior, introverted and cautious.

She felt somewhat fortunate. Although her father was not a lawyer and not as charming as the father of the protagonist in the book, compared to most other people in the village, her father was already very understanding and supportive of her.

My thoughts drifted away a little.

She thought that if she couldn't change the prejudice, she should change and improve herself.

The hair in front of her forehead fell down, so she grabbed the rubber band in her hand and tied it into a small bun. Her eyes became brighter and she continued reading.

I don't know how long I sat there, but I felt a little stiff all over. I looked up and found that the little boy who had been shaking his butt opposite me was gone. The library became like its usual library, much quieter.

I looked at my watch and it was already one o'clock in the afternoon.

The library does not close at noon. There are people on duty and they will not chase you away. However, if you want to borrow books, you have to wait until work hours.

Time flies, and it always feels like it goes by especially fast when I'm reading.

This book is very good. It was difficult to read at first, but then I gradually became addicted.

Even the notebook at hand has many pages filled with records.

Closing the book and putting it back where it belonged, she gathered her things and prepared to go to dinner and then to the gym.

"The host has been immersed in continuous reading for over three hours, reflecting on their own experiences and elevating their spiritual thoughts. I am rewarded with a random learning card. When do you want to use it?"

Su Xiaoqi didn't expect another surprise.

"use."

"The host has successfully selected the cooking skills of the black chef Calpurnia. Do you want to learn it?"

Su Xiaoqi: ...I'm kind of used to this kind of randomness.

"study."

In an instant, an item appeared on her interface: entry-level cooking.

I originally wanted to go to the fast food restaurant we went to before, it was cheap and affordable.

As she reached the door of the store, she was overwhelmed by the strong smell of cooking fumes and felt like vomiting...

I had to change to a store that looked cleaner.

I ordered two stir-fried dishes, one meat and one vegetable, a bowl of rice, and a glass of juice.

It was half past one, not the peak meal time, so there were a few fewer people.

The food was served quickly.

When Su Xiaoqi saw the food coming, she realized how hungry she was.

But the etiquette buff was still there, so she still ate slowly.

I also ordered a bowl of rice and finished all the dishes. The meal cost 98 yuan. The glass of juice cost 25 yuan. When I saw the bill, Su Xiaoqi felt a little sad. Then I saw that the rice was 5 yuan per portion...

Although the money on her screen is constantly increasing, she still has not gotten rid of the thinking of the poor.

Left the restaurant.

Su Xiaoqi felt a little sleepy, but didn't want to go back to her aunt's place. It seemed a bit troublesome to go back.

I just took a taxi.

A car happened to stop in front of her.

She asked if he wanted to go to the gym, and the master said yes.

She regretted getting in the car as soon as she got in. The narrow taxi had a strong smell and was not as comfortable as the bus. However, they did not stop along the way and soon arrived at the stadium.

Su Xiaoqi fell asleep for a while while rocking in the car. When she arrived at the gymnasium and soaked in the swimming pool, she felt awake.
