"Hey, have you heard? Liu Xihua is making a fuss again!"
"What?" The wrinkled old woman put down her lunch box, her eyes gleaming. "She's back to her parents' house to bother her brother again?"
"How could that be? I heard there was a little devil trying to seduce Deputy Captain Li, and she found out, causing a huge uproar."
"Can Deputy Captain Li just let her make trouble?"
"Of course you are. You know that Deputy Captain Li loves her like the apple of his eye. Even his original wife has to stand aside."
The woman tutted, "Look at that Deputy Captain Li too. There are so many seductresses out there, why is he so nice to Liu Xihua?"
The other man chuckled when he heard this, and came over to say something that made the woman laugh heartily. "You're just talking nonsense. I'm not going to talk to you anymore. My husband will come back from the stall and complain about not having hot food."
Ningxia stood in the corner listening silently. She had short hair that reached her ears, and her dirty little face was clean and bright except for her eyes. The slightly upturned corners of her eyes and her aloof temperament were so sharp that they could hurt people.
She brushed the dust off her legs and decided to go back and get ready. There was no need to stay in the Dawn Base any longer.
Leaving the narrow corridor, there was a small door at the corner. Ningxia pushed the door open and went in. Not caring about the dirt on her body, she turned around and lay down on the hard bed. It would be more appropriate to call it a nest rather than a home.
In order to accommodate so many disaster victims, the Shuguang Base had to build mini buildings because of insufficient original building materials. Even Ningxia, who is 1.76 meters tall, had to tilt her neck slightly to avoid installing the ceiling.
Apart from a 1.2-meter bed, there was only a 30-centimeter aisle in the room, which was so crowded that even mice would find it too crowded.
It's not so bad for those who live alone in Ningxia, but there are even some families with several members living together in such houses in the base. Just such a triangular four-story building can accommodate nearly 700 people, and this area is full of buildings like this.
Ningxia listened to the clear noise coming from next door, frowned, turned over and buried her head in the pillow, determined to leave this shabby place sooner or later.
This is the sixth year after the natural disaster, known as the First Bud Sixth Year. First Bud, it's not hard to guess the hope behind this.
Six years ago, a textbook-worthy disaster swept the globe, and Chu Hua Nation experienced a significant and sustained population decline. A major reshuffle of species occurred. At some point, the Blue Planet quietly underwent a transformation, with oxygen levels reaching terrifying levels. Instead of the shattered ruins of once-thriving cities, the post-disaster landscape was filled with vast expanses of green. Even prehistoric species appeared, along with countless new species, large and small. These adapted to natural disasters, swarming in vast numbers, far more comfortably than humans.
For the first two years, corpses littered the ground, countless people died of starvation, and cannibalism was commonplace. Those who survive today speak of those days with only agonizing memories. It wasn't until two years ago that the situation gradually stabilized. At least human technology could predict and prevent the disaster, giving survivors a chance to breathe.
Once a person is able to eat his fill, the evil hidden in his heart will be aroused. Ningxia thought of the various high-level inside stories that were rumored in the base, and closed his eyes with some disgust.
"Old Xia, are you really leaving?"
Ningxia took the homemade cigarette and lighter handed to her by the young man and lit it neatly. The flame jumped on her face for a moment and then disappeared, and the burning smoke blurred her face.
"It's going to get chaotic,"
The young man took the lighter and put it back in his pocket. His colorful hair was eye-catching, and his clothes were covered with flowing strips of fabric. Passersby occasionally looked at him with unconcealed curiosity. The young man sneered inwardly, "What a bunch of idiots! Disaster is about to happen."
"Alright, I'll pack up my belongings too. I've had enough of this awful place anyway. Old Xia, how about you come with us?"
"Come on, Kaile, who cares for your group of underage babies?" Ningxia took a long puff of her cigarette, flicked the remaining cigarette butt onto the ground without any reluctance, and crushed it with her foot until it went out.
Kaile rolled his eyes at her and said, "That's my brother."
Ningxia smiled and pulled his hair, "Did you dye your hair with urine?" Every time I saw this guy, he always had some unexpected style.
Kaile turned his head to avoid her hand, "Bullshit, a while ago Xiaodi and his friends were out and lucky enough to find a barber shop. They had all kinds of colors, and Xiaodi and his friends dyed their hair. Do you want one?"
Ningxia was about to say something when five or six young men arrived. The shortest was only as tall as Ningxia's waist, while the tallest was a head taller than her. They were wearing jackets made of patchwork fabrics of various colors, with uniform strips of fabric flying everywhere.
"Honestly, Lao Xia, where are you going? I plan to take them to Lingyang."
"Bluebird." Ningxia took a big puff of the cigarette butt that was almost burnt out in her hand, and her voice was unusually soft, "The journey is long, be careful." After saying that, she threw away the cigarette butt in her hand, lit another one, turned and left.
Kaile grinned broadly upon hearing this, "I will, Old Xia!"
Ningxia came to the trading window and looked at the words "Chuya Six Years" placed on the window. He felt a little dazed. It had been six years.
Six years ago, Ningxia was a 17-year-old orphan who spent her days in the orphanage doing nothing. She often stayed out all night without anyone to look after her, and the teachers there disliked her. In the orphanage, although she didn't have enough to eat, she was never starving.
Ningxia didn't want to be adopted, so she had to stay in the orphanage until she came of age, and then she could move her household registration out and become independent. However, she didn't expect that something unexpected would happen before she even reached adulthood.
First, there was continuous heavy rain, and floods broke out in various places. Then there was scorching sun for two consecutive months. The large number of corpses left over from the heavy rain that had not been dealt with in time caused an epidemic.
