"Oh, I see~" After resolving her doubts, Ningxia poured the approximately four pounds of mixed grain flour and the small bag of wheat flour that she had just divided out onto the stone slab that Xiaojie had prepared.
She mixed a pound of wheat flour in there, and she was not afraid of Li Gang coming to question her. The men trusted her and let her do her work without any hesitation.
"Sister, is this enough?" Xiao Jie was a little worried. He stood beside her with a bag of mixed grain noodles, as if he was ready to add more at any time.
Ningxia mixed the noodles evenly and said, "That's enough. How much can you eat? It's five pounds of noodles!"
Xiao Jie excitedly replied, "Sister, you don't know, my uncle and his friends can finish two large bowls of the thick and unpalatable noodles in our cafeteria!"
This made Ningxia hesitate, "Then add some more." She asked Xiaojie to add about one pound. She didn't believe that the portion for ten people, eight of whom were children, would not be enough!
I added some of the water I had boiled yesterday to mix the dough. Although the water wasn't hot, it was still slightly warm, perfect for kneading the dough. Ningxia added some salt and oil to the flour, then carefully mixed the water and flour together before starting to knead the dough.
Xiaojie watched intently from the side, and Ningxia also worked diligently without distraction. After a long and laborious process, a fairly smooth ball of dough was born.
"Is this all right, Sister Xia Xia?"
Ningxia shook her head and said, "Wait for him to wake up for about ten minutes, then go find me a wooden stick that's short and thick enough so I can roll the noodles." Ningxia stretched out her hand to measure the size of the rolling pin, and Xiaojie nodded and left.
Ningxia was also busy kneading the noodles. She took out the dried chilies from the bag, crushed them into chili powder, and set it aside. If anyone wanted something spicier, they could add it themselves.
Next to the cabin was a bunch of wild onions. Ningxia knew without a doubt that they were picked by Lin Yi. He was the only one who had the habit of bringing home any wild vegetables and onions he saw outside.
After washing and chopping the scallions, Ningxia stood up to check on the dough's progress. She reached out and poked it, only to make a small indentation, which took a long time to spring back. Ningxia sighed. Sure enough, making dough rise without yeast was incredibly difficult.
But it's okay, it's for noodles, except that the texture is not so soft,
Ningxia took the clean rolling pin handed to him by Xiaojie, looked at Xiaojie with appreciation, and then showed his skills on the big stone slab.
The dough was too big, so she divided it into four parts to roll out. She sprinkled some dry powder on the stone slab to prevent sticking, rolled each part of the dough into a thin sheet, rolled it up, and cut it into thin strips with a greased knife.
Then gently shake the thin strips and the noodles are ready. Ningxia is quite satisfied. After all, it is very good to be able to do this with these ingredients.
A lot of noodles can be cut out from one piece of dough. If the stone slab wasn't big enough, Ningxia would have a hard time rolling out even ten pieces.
By the time Ningxia finished, it was already daybreak. After more than two hours of hard work, all he got was a pile of noodles covered with leaves on the stone slab.
"Sister, I'll go wake up uncle and the others."
Ningxia stopped him and said, "Why are you panicking? Look." She pointed to the bright morning glow in the sky, which was shining with golden and colorful light. It was the gift given to the sky by the sun that was about to rise.
Xiaojie smiled and sat down next to Ningxia, listening to the chirping of summer cicadas and enjoying this rare leisure time.
Ningxia rested her chin in her hands. She'd been so apprehensive all this way, she hadn't even carefully observed the difference between the afternoon and morning skies. Finally, she'd met these reliable soldiers. For days, she'd been in the forest, unable to see a thing. Now, with a rare, unobstructed view, she realized how much they'd missed along the way. Perhaps the disaster wasn't all bad.
"Xia Xia!"
Ningxia's thoughts were interrupted. She turned around and saw Sangsang stumbling out. She stood up and skillfully took the hand of a little girl, leading her to the toilet behind a nearby tree.
When she returned, the soldiers were already up and squatting in a row behind the cabin with Lin Yi, brushing their teeth. That's right, they wet their toothbrushes, brushed them inside and out, and then rinsed their mouths. Ningxia at least dipped them in salt, but the others just used water, and I don't know if that helped...
"I'm going to be down there when you get up!" Ningxia peeled back the leaves. The pot was boiling water, and she had already poured the chicken broth into a thermos and a kettle. They had no choice; they didn't have a basin.
She originally wanted to cook the noodles directly in the chicken broth, but there were too many noodles and they would probably clump together. She decided to just pour out the chicken broth and use it as a topping.
The men had obviously heard from Xiaojie that they were going to have noodles. They weren't very surprised, but they couldn't hide the anticipation in their eyes. "Okay, Ningxia, thank you for helping us clean up."
Ningxia smiled and went straight to work.
The water in the pot had already boiled, and Ningxia grabbed a handful of noodles in each hand, shook them loose, and put them in. When the pot boiled again, she took a pair of long chopsticks and stirred them.
There is still more than half of the noodles left on the stone slab. There is no way. The pot is big and Ningxia makes a lot of noodles. I can only cook a batch first and add more if it is not enough.
Soon, the noodles floated up, with layers of dense bubbles on top. Xiaojie took a few soldiers' large bowls and placed them aside to make it easier for Ningxia to scoop the noodles in.
Each person took half a bowl. Ningxia poured the chicken soup from the thermos into the bowl and used the spoon made by Xiaojie to scoop some bamboo shoots and chicken into each bowl. The slightly yellow noodles and the thick yellow chicken soup were steaming hot and fragrant.
Ningxia suddenly remembered the leftover oil from frying meat last time. The noodles didn't have much oil or water, so she just scooped a small amount into each bowl and added it.
Several soldiers sat in a row on the stone blocks, stirred the noodles casually, and then scooped up a big mouthful and stuffed it into their mouths. "It smells so good! I can't remember how long it has been since I had a proper noodle meal."
