Lin Yi was a little flustered, "When I get to Qingniao Island, can I still follow Sister Xia Xia?" Perhaps because of what happened at Chen Zhifang's house, Lin Yi had an inexplicable dependence on her, and his eyes were full of hope.
Ningxia raised the corners of her lips slightly, and her brows softened considerably. "We'll talk about this when we get there."
Lin Yi lowered his head and silently nibbled on the steamed bun in his hand. It was delicious, so delicious that his eyes were hot. He couldn't remember how long it had been since he had a decent meal with his sister.
Sangsang, however, did not have such emotions. He happily took small bites of the food and finished it in no time.
Ningxia saw that the eggs in the pot were almost done, so he didn't bother to look for them with his chopsticks. He just picked up two branches and picked them up. When they were almost done, he gave one to each of them.
Lin Yi was stunned and at a loss, "Sister Xia Xia, no need... steamed buns are enough."
Unfortunately, he didn't look favorably upon Sangsang when he declined. The little girl, smart as a child, took the egg from Ningxia's hand and opened her small teeth again. "Thank you, Xia Xia!" she said, turning to her brother and saying, "Brother, peel it!"
Ningxia raised her lips and put the egg in her hand on the open space in front of Lin Yi, "One for each of you, don't give it to your sister. You won't be able to digest it if you eat too much. Sleep for half an hour after eating, and I'll call you when the time is up." After that, she got up and went out.
The two little ones shared the eggs in the cave. Sangsang was young after all, so he fell asleep soon after eating. Lin Yi was left tossing and turning and sighing several times, with a thousand thoughts in his mind. However, his body was too tired, and he fell asleep next to Sangsang soon.
Ningxia lit a cigarette skillfully outside the cave, staring blankly at Mule in the smoke. She didn't lack Chen Jin's gun, nor did she lack Mu Yuanqing's seeds. It was just that they looked too much alike. Lin Yi's eyebrows and eyes were too much like Mo Guanshan's. She missed him a little.
Ningxia lowered her head and pursed her lips in a smile. She had actually stopped blaming him. In such a chaotic world, someone had to choose to shoulder the responsibility. She and many others had chosen to escape, but Mo Guanshan hadn't. Reason returned to her. Honestly, she admired him and was proud of him.
Before he left, he repeatedly told her to wait for him. Wait? In such a chaotic world, waiting was truly painful, and Ningxia didn't want to, so she chose to escape and live in peace. Living was already difficult, and she didn't want to pin her hopes on some ethereal things.
Ningxia put her thoughts aside and glanced at the mechanical watch on her hand that was still working hard. The two children had been sleeping for forty minutes. She returned to the cave and planned to wake them up.
Before he could speak, Lin Yi opened his eyes first, with a rare look of confusion in his eyes.
"Wake up your sister and get ready to go."
Sangsang hummed for a while, but finally got up obediently.
Ningxia carried one of the bundles and placed it on the mule. He went back and forth twice before he was able to pack everything.
"Maomao!" After just over an hour of not seeing each other, Sangsang looked at the obedient mule at the cave entrance and called out with the momentum of a long-awaited reunion. Her outstretched little hands kept opening and closing, which was quite funny.
Ningxia swiftly lifted Sangsang onto the mule and turned to look at Lin Yi. "Can you walk on your own?"
Lin Yi nodded quickly. He wanted this more than ever. Sitting on the mule made him feel very uncomfortable.
The three of them set out again. They were already some distance away from the Dawn Base. As they walked deeper into the dense forest, Ningxia could no longer tell the direction and had to take out a compass.
Because there were too many thorns, it was more difficult for the mule to walk than for a person. Ningxia had to unload Sangsang and let Lin Yi lead her. She held the machete and walked in front, cutting through the thorns to clear the way for the mule.
After two hours, both the people and the mule were exhausted. The brother and sister were even more unsteady in their steps, gasping for breath, and their lips became even paler.
Ningxia had no choice but to let them stop and stay there with the mule to rest while she continued forward in another direction. She remembered that there was a stream in this area and she had to find a place to camp tonight. The forest was not as peaceful at night as it was during the day.
Lin Yi stayed where she was, feeling uneasy, but she felt a little relieved when she saw the mule breathing beside her. She couldn't just...abandon the mule.
A long time passed until the sound of constant friction in the woods was heard. Lin Yi silently blocked Sangsang behind him, and when he saw the familiar figure coming out, he quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
"Let's go. It's not far from here. It's the stream."
Lin Yi struggled to stand up, and Sangsang also obediently stood up by holding on to her brother's legs. Even though Ningxia had already dealt with the thorns on the road, the steps of the brother and sister were still heavier with each step. Ningxia could only slow down her pace again and again. Finally, after half an hour, they successfully arrived at a small open space not too far from the stream.
Ningxia did not stop to unload the luggage from the mule, and then took the mule to the stream to tie it up and let it rest.
She deftly cut off a number of long, snarling branches and spread them on the ground. She also plucked the leaves of any giant calla lilies she could find nearby and spread them thickly across the branches, about half a meter high. Thus, a "bed" was created that could temporarily isolate the ground from moisture.
It is worth mentioning that many animals and plants proliferated after the disaster, and the giant calla lily is one of them. Not only is it proliferating, but it is also somewhat different from before. One leaf can completely cover the size of a Ningxia 175-meter-tall calla lily, which is really a must-have for setting up camp.
Ningxia took out the gray and worn cotton wool that had been pressed tightly into the bed from her bag and spread it on the leaves. Although the cotton wool had become unheated, its warmth-retaining function had not diminished much. Moreover, with a mattress on top, it would be much more comfortable to lie on.
After preparing a place for rest, Ningxia carried Sangsang, who was sitting listlessly on the ground, to the 'bed' and instructed Lin Yi, "You come here to rest too. Take good care of your sister." After that, he took the knife and went into the woods. After a while, he heard the sound of felling trees, and he did not look tired at all.
