Chapter 8 Cooking

"I'm not sleepy. Let me help you, Sister Xia Xia."

"Then go clean that slab. I'll use it to knead the dough later."

Ningxia skillfully soaked some dried meat, tore it into thin strips and set it aside. She also took out the shepherd's purse that Lin Yi had packed and chopped it into small pieces. After all the preparations were completed, she sat down by the stone slab with a kettle of warm water.

"Xia Xia, what are you doing?" Sangsang left his pet Maomao and squatted beside Ningxia, his big eyes full of curiosity.

Ningxia didn't even look up. "Make cakes."

Sangsang didn't disturb her after hearing that. The brother and sister squatted beside her and watched Ningxia kneading the dough. The mule not far away was even more leisurely, occasionally lowering its head to nibble a mouthful of grass. In the time that followed, the three of them couldn't help but smile knowingly whenever they thought of the scene at that time.

The pancakes, with shredded pork and shepherd's purse, were salty and delicious. Ningxia hadn't used much oil, but it still made Sangsang salivate. Ningxia found it amusing and picked up one, split it in half, and handed it to the brother and sister.

His sister's drool was dripping onto his hand. Lin Yi couldn't bear to refuse, so he took it, tore it into small pieces, let it cool, and then passed it to his sister. The whole pancake, as big as a bowl, went into Sangsang's stomach. Lin Yi only tasted a small piece, which his sister had forced into his mouth midway.

Unlike the soft texture of steamed buns, the wild vegetable pancake has a unique toughness of coarse grains. When you take a bite, you can also taste the subtle aroma of wheat flour, wrapped in the fragrance of wild vegetables, and the salty and fragrant dried meat. Sangsang has never eaten anything like this in his memory. After eating a pancake, he felt a lot more lively.

Ningxia didn't offer any more, instead putting the small stack of pancakes away. The siblings were also sensible enough not to ask for more. After waiting for the water in the pot to boil again, Ningxia boiled two more eggs and wrapped them up before the three of them set off again.

Perhaps because they had a good rest the previous night, the brother and sister's faces looked much better than yesterday. They were able to hold on even after a long, truant walk. They stopped at one in the afternoon to eat. The cold pancakes didn't taste as good as before, but no one complained. They devoured nearly a dozen bowl-sized pancakes in one sitting.

Ningxia stopped with the brother and sister just after dusk. She cooked some porridge with the water in the kettle and gave each of them a boiled egg for dinner.

Ningxia still didn't dare to fall asleep. She watched over the brother and sister, listening vigilantly to the movements around them. She also counted the supplies they had and estimated the consumption. Only at dawn did she stop thinking about it and wake up Lin Yi to make breakfast. Before Ningxia fell into a deep sleep, she thought that she would probably have to stop on the road for a while to collect supplies.
