Seeing that the brother and sister were fast asleep, Ningxia, who was sitting, turned sideways and looked at them carefully. The brother and sister had the same short, unevenly trimmed, burnt yellow hair close to their scalps.
Sangsang has round eyes, a round nose, and even round lips and ears. He looks very pleasing, but he is too thin. At first glance, he looks a bit like a white-skinned, big-headed alien.
Unlike Sangsang's pleasing appearance, Lin Yi's single eyelids, high nose bridge, and lips that are always tightly pursed all indicate that he is a child who is difficult to approach, not to mention that his closed eyes are full of vigilance and precautions, without any childish innocence.
Ningxia lowered her eyes. It was a resemblance. His features resembled Mo Guanshan's, though Mo Guanshan's were warmer and more uplifting. And Lin Yi's eyes, the emotions more like hers. It was those eyes that moved her to compassion, and she led them on their journey. Ningxia thought about the day's journey and sighed deeply.
Ningxia endured the night, listening to the gurgling water. Dawn was approaching, and when she looked at her watch, it was four in the morning. The two children had slept for nearly nine hours before Ningxia finally woke Lin Yi. The boy sat up immediately, his hand still on Sangsang's shoulder, his eyes filled with wariness.
Ningxia yawned, "Wake up! I'm going to sleep for a bit. I'll make breakfast." Then, she fell asleep. Sangsang pouted at the noise, then turned over and continued to sleep sweetly. Lin Yi rubbed his head, relaxed, and quickly got up, put on his coat, and sat down by the campfire. Only when the sky gradually brightened did Lin Yi dare to go to the stream to wash up.
Lin Yi shivered when the cold stream water touched his skin. The temperature at dawn was really high.
After washing up, he didn't rush back. He picked up a stick from the ground and started looking by the stream. There were large patches of weeds by the stream and there was plenty of water. It was spring, so he wanted to see if he could pick some wild vegetables.
Lin Yi searched for a long time, startling the half-lying mule so much that it stood up and glared at him, its big, watery eyes full of confusion. Fortunately, the dense forest did not let him down, and Lin Yi finally found a small patch of purslane in a moist, overgrown field.
Lin Yi smiled, a rare sight. He picked only the tenderest vegetables, filling the pockets on his shirt until they were full. He returned to the stream and cleaned them up carefully, not caring about getting his clothes wet as he returned to the campfire with his pockets full of wet vegetables.
He expertly dug out the milk pot, filled it with water, and refilled the two kettles before settling down to cook the porridge. Sangsang also woke up at this moment.
"Brother~" Lin Yi went over and carefully took the girl out of the clothes to avoid disturbing Ningxia. He quickly dressed his sister.
The brother and sister sat together by the fire, the heat waves hitting them so hot that it made their hearts melt. Lin Yi looked down at his well-behaved sister sitting next to him and reached out to touch her head. Sangsang smiled politely, her round eyes curved into crescents.
Lin Yi raised the corners of his mouth. Last night was the most peaceful and warmest sleep he had had since his grandfather passed away.
The porridge soon became thick. After thinking it over, Lin Yi was reluctant to add dried meat again. After all, he had already eaten it last night. He just sprinkled some mushroom powder and seasonings in the bag, and then sprinkled a handful of chopped wild vegetables into the pot before serving.
The yellowish multi-grain rice accompanied by the lush green vegetables was a feast for the senses. The brother and sister swallowed their saliva again and again, but neither of them asked to eat first.
Lin Yi looked at Ningxia, who was still soundly asleep, and took out two sticks of firewood. He took the milk pot to the stone slab beside him, covered it with leaves and let it dry. Then he took Sangsang by the hand and stood up. "Why don't you and your brother go pick some wild vegetables? We can have porridge after Sister Xia Xia wakes up."
Sangsang nodded vigorously and opened the kettle she was holding. Lin Yi had poured some boiled water into it that morning. The sweetness, which was not obvious to begin with, became even weaker, but Sangsang still sighed with satisfaction and gulped down a lot of it.
Lin Yi took Sangsang to continue picking wild vegetables. Sangsang could also pick them, but his movements were much slower than Lin Yi. Lin Yi also found a lot of shepherd's purse on the ground, but the quantity was not large, and they were all picked up in a short while.
The brother and sister returned to the mule. Lin Yi took out an empty bag from his luggage, washed and dried the two kinds of wild vegetables, and packed them separately and carefully. However, the quantity was not too much, just enough for one meal.
Sangsang was just talking to the mule, Maomao kept barking and occasionally pulling up some tender grass to feed it. Fortunately, Maomao was very considerate and ate whatever he was given. He looked at Sangsang with a harmless look.
"Xia Xia! You're awake!" Sangsang suddenly dropped the grass in his hand and ran over.
Ningxia stretched, pulled her hair, raised her hand to look at the watch, she had slept for almost five hours, and it was already past nine o'clock. This was not a hurry, this was a spring outing.
"Why don't you two eat first?" Ningxia took the porridge from Lin Yi and gulped down a big mouthful. The temperature had already started to rise, and the warm porridge made her limbs feel warmed.
Sangsang finally drank the porridge she had been longing for. She was so happy that her two thin legs kept shaking. "I have to wait for Xia Xia!"
"Next time this happens, don't wait for me. Just keep my share."
Ningxia drank while looking at the porridge in the pot. At this time of year, there were wild vegetables everywhere, which made the porridge taste much better. "You can put whatever you want in the cooking. Don't be reluctant. Just take what you have in your bag."
Lin Yi hesitated a little, then nodded and said okay.
"Sister Xia Xia... aren't we leaving?" Lin Yi looked at Ning Xia who was busy in the bank.
"I'll prepare meals for lunch and dinner. I may not be able to find water to cook tonight. You should take a nap. It will be dark before we set off." Ningxia didn't even turn around. He took out the flour and cornmeal from his bag and carefully scooped some into a bowl made of leaves.
