Chapter 279 Sister and Brother
Qingliang Palace is located in a remote corner of the deep palace, quiet and cold.
It's okay in the summer, but in late autumn, the draft brings the chill right into your bones.
The emperor gathered his cloak and stepped into the hall, but it was pitch black.
"Light up."
The female official quickly took out the tinder.
But the candle flame that had just been lit was immediately blown out by the wind that came from nowhere.
This was repeated three times, but it still didn't ignite.
The female official first ordered the palace servants to close all the doors and windows, and then she smelled a strong odor of alcohol.
The candlelight stabilized, illuminating the figure crouching on the table.
Zhao Ji was awakened by the light and wiped his face roughly. There were still wine stains on his beard.
He squinted his eyes to adapt to the light, and after seeing who was coming, a trace of clarity flashed in his chaotic eyes.
"It's you, sister," Zhao Ji's voice was dry and hoarse, "You finally came to see me."
He looked at the emperor's dragon robe and said, "This suits you very well."
The emperor covered his mouth and nose with a handkerchief and said, "I heard from the palace servants that you drink every day and are not afraid of drinking yourself to death."
Zhao Ji chuckled, groped for the wine jar beside the table, grabbed it and took another sip, "If sister doesn't want me to drink, where else can I get the wine?"
"I thought it was my sister's idea."
"If I wanted you dead, I could have killed you on the day of the coup," the emperor said coldly, "and then pushed the blame onto your son or Song Ying."
She walked forward slowly, "But I didn't do that. I was concerned about the relationship between sister and brother."
"I'm the one who's wronged my sister," Zhao Ji suddenly became excited, "and it has nothing to do with Xuan Yi and A Ying."
The emperor sneered, "You are truly affectionate towards Song Ying."
Zhao Ji held his head in pain.
He didn't want to live anymore.
But his sister threatened Zhao Xuanyi's life.
For the stability of the court, he, the deposed emperor, cannot die too early.
He should have gone with Song Ying long ago.
But he couldn't be that selfish.
At least, save my son's life.
"Sister, what brings you to see me today?" Zhao Ji really didn't want to face the person in front of him. He just wanted to live the rest of his life in a daze.
The emperor's tone softened.
"Your birthday is coming soon."
"I've calmed down. After all, we are siblings. Back then, the Queen Mother Song wanted to kill me, and you intervened many times."
"I have decided to make you king. After your birthday, you will choose a fiefdom and live your life at ease."
Zhao Ji stared at the emperor in disbelief, but could not tell whether her words were true or not.
"What about Xuan Yi?"
The emperor said casually, "We must leave a hostage in the capital. If they all leave, how can I feel at ease?"
Zhao Ji smiled bitterly, "Sister, I have always felt ashamed of myself for not being as capable as you."
"Of course," the emperor said, "otherwise father wouldn't have looked down on you."
Having said everything that needed to be said, the emperor had no intention of staying any longer.
"Don't drink any more. Tomorrow I'll have someone take you to a warmer palace so you can recuperate. We'll meet on your birthday. Don't let Zhao Xuanyi see you in this state."
A glimmer flashed across Zhao Ji's eyes, and his lips trembled slightly. "Sister, are you willing for us father and son to meet?"
He couldn't suppress his inner excitement.
I never thought I would have the chance to see you again in this life.
"It's not a big deal," the emperor said indifferently, "I'll allow you to meet on your birthday."
"Okay, I'll listen to you, sister." Zhao Ji laughed.
He suddenly kicked the wine jar and broke it. "I will never drink again."
"I won't drink when I get to my fiefdom. Don't worry, sister. I won't cause any trouble or bring you any trouble."
He was a little at a loss and spoke incoherently.
The emperor gave him a gentle smile and said, "Okay."
When turning around, the emperor closed his eyes, preventing anyone from seeing the deep hesitation hidden in his eyes.
But only for a brief moment.
Once the arrow is shot, there is no turning back.
The dragon throne is really a good thing. It makes people's hearts grow colder and colder.
