The entire ward was quiet, as if all the air had been sucked out.
Just then, the door opened and the doctor walked in.
Upon seeing the doctor, the elderly man calmly and firmly said, "Hello doctor, I want to be discharged."
Upon hearing this, the eyes of the son, daughter-in-law, grandson, and old lady were filled with sorrow, and they were speechless.
"Why?" The doctor walked over to the old man, took out his stethoscope to examine his body, and asked, "There's nothing wrong with your body. I'm already preparing for your surgery."
Upon hearing this, the son spoke again, trying to dissuade his father: "Dad~"
The old man shook his head at his son, then said to the doctor, "Doctor, thank you for your kindness, but I have made up my mind."
There has to be a reason.
"Hehe..." The old man chuckled, appearing remarkably carefree in the final moments of his life. "I have no money left at home."
"Yes," the doctor said, his hands in his pockets. Just as the old man was about to reply, he heard the doctor say, "Sir, someone just paid for your surgery, medical expenses, and all other costs. You have enough money in your account."
"Huh?" The wife's voice rose a few decibels.
The old lady's eyes sparkled with disbelief and a hint of joy.
The old man turned to look at his son, who looked completely bewildered. Knowing that his son hadn't acted on his own initiative, the old man frowned and asked, "Are you sure you're not mistaken?"
"You're Chen Defa, aren't you?"
"My name is Chen Defa."
"Then that's correct." The doctor nodded. "You have sufficient funds in your account for the rest of your treatment."
The old man asked, "Doctor, who paid the fees? What's their name? What do they look like? How old are they?..."
"I'm sorry, we can't disclose the client's information." The doctor patted the patient on the shoulder. "Don't worry, sir. Just rest and recover. I'll perform the surgery in a few days. Everything will be alright."
After saying that, the doctor left the ward, leaving the family completely bewildered.
The group looked at each other, speechless for a moment.
The old man spoke first: "Who is it?"
"That's great! That's great! We finally have the money for the surgery!" The son's face was filled with excitement.
"Grandpa, Grandpa~~~" the grandson called out loudly, lying on the old man's knees.
The old lady was puzzled: "We don't have any wealthy relatives around us, and very few people know about Old Chen's hospitalization. So who exactly spent millions to pay the medical bills without leaving a single word?"
He paused, then turned his gaze to his son: "Son, did you tell others about your father's situation?"
"No." The son shook his head, equally puzzled, and subconsciously said, "I just happened to say a few words to that couple who often walk with you two."
"Xiao Chu?!" The old lady immediately grasped the key point.
“Yes,” the son replied. “When I broke down today, it was that young man who comforted me.”
The old lady and the old man looked at each other, and then the former pushed the latter to leave the ward. As they walked out of the ward, they subconsciously headed towards the nursing home.
The old man reminded him, "Outside the hospital."
The old lady remembered that perhaps the two people had not left yet, and walked towards the hospital exit.
As she walked out of the hospital, the old woman looked around and heard her son's voice: "Mom and Dad, where are you?"
Following the direction, I saw the couple getting into their car, preparing to leave. The old woman and her family were running, shouting loudly...
Unfortunately, the car was never found; it disappeared into the bustling traffic.
The family, panting, looked ahead but didn't see the familiar figure. The old lady asked the doctor who had just been talking to Chu Fang and Xiao Zhong, "Doctor, could you give me Xiao Chu and Xiao Zhong's contact information? Thank you."
"I'm sorry, we are not allowed to disclose our clients' privacy." The doctor shook his head. "You two are Grandma Liu and Grandpa Chen, right?"
The two nodded.
“I can’t give you your contact information.” The doctor paused, then took a letter out of his pocket. “When Mr. Chu left, he instructed me that if you two guessed it, I should give this letter to you.”
The old lady quickly took the letter, unwrapped it, and read in neat, square characters: "Hehe, Grandma Liu, Grandpa Chen, since you two have seen this letter, you must have already guessed. That's right, I paid for Grandpa Chen's medical expenses..."
The old woman's son and daughter-in-law exchanged glances, their pupils reflecting shock.
They had met Chu Fang and Zhong Tingyue before; they were a very good-looking couple who often took walks with their parents, chatting about everyday and traditional topics, like close friends despite their age difference.
But unexpectedly, the couple possessed such immense wealth.
The two continued reading: "These past few days, Zhong Tingyue and I have been very happy to get to know you two. Thank you for your company and your earnest guidance. We have also heard your stories, which have benefited us greatly and given us direction and faith for the future. We don't know how to repay you, so we can only express our gratitude in this small way. We hope you two will accept it."
I originally wanted to exchange contact information, but you two declined, so oh well. As the old man said, why bother with past acquaintances when we meet?
We hope the old man's surgery is successful, that he will be discharged from the hospital soon, and that he will be healthy and safe.
Finally, the candy was very sweet, and Zhong Tingyue and I liked it very much.
A short letter brought peace to the family.
The old lady held the letter tightly, pursed her lips, and suddenly slapped her husband's shoulder. Her voice was tinged with anger, and tears welled up in her eyes: "It's all your fault. What's wrong with leaving a contact number?"
"It's my fault, it's my fault..." The old man turned around and wiped away his wife's tears.
The old lady's tears were a mixture of gratitude to Chu Fang and Zhong Tingyue, and joy at the prospect of saving her husband. These emotions had been bottled up inside her for a long time, and now they were finally released.
"Grandpa~~~" The grandson lay on the old man's knees, looking at him at a 45-degree angle.
"Yangyang is such a good boy." The old man stroked his grandson's little face.
At this moment, the old lady and her family had tears in their eyes.
If given a choice, who would want to give up treatment?
... ...
Only after the family disappeared from sight did Zhong Tingyue slowly turn around: "Hey, why didn't you say goodbye to them?"
"No need. I can already picture that scene; it's terrifying." Chu Fang drove cautiously, touching his arm and swaying his body. "It's best to keep the beautiful people in your heart forever."
If they were to exchange parting greetings, the elderly couple would do everything in their power to make amends to Chu, and their relationship would undergo a dramatic transformation.
That's not what he wanted.
Therefore, even after seeing several people run out of the hospital, Chu Fang still drove away, not wanting to greet them.
Zhong Tingyue nodded, untied the black plastic bag, took out a piece of candy, fed it to Chu Fang, then put it in her own mouth and sipped it carefully: "Mr. Chu, this is one of the few valuable large-scale purchases you've ever made in your life."
"That's right!"
