Chapter 36
The little girl Qiongzhi is good in every way except that she is too hardworking. She doesn't understand that when everyone else is lazy, it's better for her to be lazy too. So even if she does this to please everyone, the result is unsatisfactory.
Not surprising.
In a group of people, there are always one or two people who live very hard and seriously but are still not accepted.
She hadn't done anything wrong, but sometimes it was better to be wrong.
Otherwise it would be like now, tiring and no one appreciated her. Everyone said a few perfunctory words to her, then turned around and thought she was a weird person.
"Do you want to go see Xuan Xiao and the others?"
Shen Jiao saw her sitting alone in the corner folding gold ingots while taking a break, so he went to ask her.
Qiongzhi was quite happy. She smiled and nodded and said yes.
Holding her hand, I went with her.
These furry, chubby mice are very comfortable to touch, even without looking at their pointed and monkey-like appearance or listening to their constant squeaking sounds.
They had been washed recently and still smelled a little of the soap.
Xuan Youxi gave birth to a litter of little mice, but she didn't allow anyone to see them. Shen Jiao counted them through the cage and there seemed to be only two. They were as ugly as they were when they were little, but a little fatter than when they were little.
"It's getting uglier and uglier. The rat in the warehouse is still prettier."
Qiongzhi sighed, handed Xuan Youlu, who was stiff in her hand, to the side of the cage, pointed at Xuan Youxi inside and said to it,
"Look, this is your sister. The one in the nest is your child. Come say hello."
Xuan Youlu didn't move or say a word, and Qiongzhi didn't care. She raised her paw and waved it, saying in a silly voice,
"Hello, let's go out and play together later. Let's go steal some snacks together."
She entertained herself and had a lot of fun.
Shen Jiao broke up some snacks and fed them to them, saying, "They look like big, hairy sweet potatoes."
Qiongzhi looked at him carefully and said, "Xuan Youfu is the most similar. He's too fat and doesn't like to move."
Either it lies in the cage or comes out and lies on people.
"It's so lame. I guess it's awkward for it to drag one leg." Shen Jiao felt a little pity for the little fat guy.
"At least you're still alive," Qiongzhi consoled her. "Escaping with Cat's Claw is quite an achievement."
"That's true."
"You are very slim if you have a longevity."
"It's too picky about its mouth."
"It's better to be rich and beautiful."
“But it’s a bit stupid.”
"A bunch of crooked melons and cracked dates."
"Alas," Shen Jiao sighed, "The young master likes it very much."
The two looked at each other and smiled. Qiongzhi said, "At least they don't bite each other. Those mice in the warehouse fight a lot, and there are many cases of cannibalism. If you are not careful, only the head and skin are left."
"All rats are the same. Perhaps they just don't have a chance..."
Shen Jiao has not forgotten that these little ones like to grind their teeth on her. Unexpectedly, it gets better when they grow up, but they still like to grin.
Shen Jiao glanced at Xuan Xiao, who was baring his teeth. "I think it understood."
"It seems like you don't like it," Qiongzhi coaxed, "Don't be angry, I'm not talking about you."
Xuan Xiao didn't believe it at all. He turned his head and nibbled Qiongzhi's finger, then reached out to touch it. It hurt a lot, but the skin wasn't broken at all. He was very merciful.
When Xue Shun came back in the evening, Qiongzhi told him about this as a funny story.
Xue Shun really liked hearing this, but he couldn't help but say something harsh: "It's your fault. Who told you to provoke them? If they bite you, it's your own fault."
Qiongzhi didn't know how to respond and subconsciously looked at Shen Jiao.
Shen Jiao came to the rescue and said, "What I said was the truth. I should have blocked their ears earlier."
"Hmph, alright," Xue Shun glanced at her, "you'd better plug my ears too, so that you don't have to carry anything on my back when you say anything."
"I dare not."
"It's strange that you don't dare. You're looking at me and I don't know."
Xue Shun looked unhappy again. Shen Jiao thought he would curse again, but he didn't. Instead, he changed the subject and asked, "I asked you to buy medicine. Did you buy it?"
He fiddled with the ink-stained white cloth in his hand.
Qiongzhi said hurriedly: "I have bought it and distributed it to the sisters to apply. The rest is here."
She took the medicine out of a box.
"Let me apply some medicine to you, young master."
"Okay." Xue Shun lowered his eyes and thought for a while, then held out his hand and watched Qiongzhi remove the white cloth to apply medicine on him. He felt... the small wound was a little painful.
Other than that, there's no other feeling.
Xue Shun breathed a sigh of relief and looked up to follow Shen Jiao's figure. He saw her with her back to him, taking out the things for making river lanterns and placing them on the round dining table.
She was still wearing a green dress, with her hair in twin buns and an emerald silk ribbon. Apart from a hairpin, a pair of pearl earrings, and a jade ring on her finger, she had no other ornaments. In the dim candlelight, she turned around...
Xue Shun: ...I'd better see a doctor.
He turned his head away, a line of poetry still lingering in his mind:
Only when you are indifferent can you realize how beautiful the flowers are, and when you are too sad, how can the jade be without any marks?
Qiongzhi looked at Shen Jiao, then at him, frowned, and suddenly exerted a little more force with her hands.
Xue Shun hissed softly and looked back. Blood was oozing out from the wound that was almost healing.
Qiongzhi said in panic, "Please forgive me, sir. I am a stupid servant."
"Forget it, let's go down."
Xue Shun didn't care about it.
Shen Jiao was about to step forward, but she saw Qiongzhi give her a look, as if asking her to go out.
Shen Jiao thought for a moment and didn't move forward. She stood where she was and asked, "Master, can I copy for you today?"
"No need," Xue Shun said, pressing his handkerchief against the wound, "Go and do your own thing."
"Yes," Shen Jiao bent her knees and went out, letting Qiongzhi pull her into the kitchen. After closing the doors and windows, she asked in confusion,
"What's the matter? You're in such a hurry, aren't you hungry and want to steal something to eat?"
"What are you eating? Sister, stop joking. Something terrible has happened," Qiongzhi said anxiously, clutching her tightly. "The young master has taken a fancy to you!"
Shen Jiao:?
"ah?"
"Ah, what? I'm serious. Just now... Sister, didn't you see the way he looked at you? His eyes were almost fixed on you. The moment you turned around, his neck and ears turned red. His face was like rouge, and he turned his head away immediately. If this wasn't because he fell in love with you, what else could it be? I know that no man is a good thing. They are all perverts!"
She chopped her foot angrily and gritted her teeth, as if she wanted to kill Xue Shun.
Shen Jiao didn't panic at all, but suddenly said: "So that's how it is..."
"What do you mean? So that's it? Did he do something?" Qiongzhi came out of her thoughts and looked at her with wide eyes.
Shen Jiao shook her head: "Don't worry, he didn't do anything, he's just a coward with a will.
I was wondering why he was acting weird, so this is what happened..."
Shen Jiao chuckled and muttered something, not taking it to heart at all. Instead, he said,
"I remember there's some crispy pork left from dinner. Since we're here, let's share it."
