Chapter 39 Chapter 39 I'm so cold now
Tonight, the sky darkened exceptionally early, the horizon blurring into indistinctness. In the distance, dark clouds loomed like a pressure cooker lid, bearing down with gloom. By mid-afternoon, the weather was already looking ominous. Yet, the long-brewing thunderstorm remained silent, steadily gathering strength, as if poised to strike at some unforeseen moment.
The air was stiflingly hot, the cicadas silent. Few people were walking on the streets, and cars raced by. Everyone knew a rainstorm was coming, and they hurried home to take shelter.
Wen Yu drove onto Central Avenue. She kept driving straight on, then turned right at the intersection. She found herself in a bridal market. There were many bridal shops nearby, from big-name brands to niche options. Several of the bridal shops Yu Xianyun had chosen for Wen Yu were located here, making it convenient for her to try on dresses from one store to another.
Wen Yu had been waiting in the bridal shop for a long time. The receptionist poured Wen Yu glass after glass of water, and the bridal consultant waited nearby. As the door opened, Wen Yu and Yu Xianyun walked in. The bridal consultant greeted them with a polite and enthusiastic "Are you Mr. Wen Yu's wife? Please come this way."
Wen Yu followed the bridal consultant into the back room and immediately spotted Wen Yu sitting on the long sofa in the middle. Wen Yu was flipping through a bridal catalogue in the shop. Noticing someone coming in, he looked up and made eye contact with Wen Yu.
What kind of expression was this? Like a calm lake under a clear sky, not a ripple forming; like parched earth after a long drought, speechless; like a block of ice frozen in a refrigerator, seemingly unmelting for a thousand years; like a dead fish in a filthy fish market, staring blankly, motionless...
Wen Yu pondered and recalled with doubt. That night, when they spoke on the phone, Pan Xianchen had been so arrogant in front of them, possessing a power that wanted to overthrow the world and a sharp edge that was unstoppable. She felt it firsthand. And what about Wen Yu on the other end of the phone? They were so close, didn't he hear it?
He should have heard it. He called again, but Wen Yu didn't answer. Then, Wen Yu's phone went silent.
Wen Yu didn't ask, didn't show any concern, and even acted completely unaware as usual. He stood up and walked towards her, pointing to the wedding dress album and saying calmly, "This one, this one, and this one. I think they suit you very well. Take a look for yourself. Are there any other ones you like?"
Wen Yu didn't look at the album, but instead stared at Wen Yu with a searching, disbelieving gaze. Wen Yu's eyes were like the still water of an ancient well; he stared at the wedding dress pictures, at Wen Yu, at the bridal consultant who began her passionate sales pitch, at the water the receptionist poured for him...their gaze was the same.
Are there any men like this?
Wen Yu laughed inwardly. So indifferent, so unconcerned. Suddenly, she thought of another man, the complete opposite of Wen Yu. Why were all the men she'd been involved with recently so extreme? Extremely cold and intensely passionate.
After exchanging pleasantries with Wen Yu's mother, the bridal consultant finally approached the hostess and introduced herself with a broad smile, "Ms. Wen Yu, right? My last name is Wang. Now, let me introduce you to the wedding gowns in our store. Ms. Wen, do you have any special preferences or requirements? I can make some specific recommendations for you."
Wen Yu looked from Consultant Wang to her mother. Her mother's smile was just as radiant as the consultant's. She spun around the shop like a tireless top. There were so many wedding dresses in the shop, covering several walls, that she flipped through them one by one, touching them one by one. When she saw something particularly beautiful, she excitedly turned back to Wen Yu and said, "Xiao Yu, look at how beautiful wedding dresses are these days! They're like fairies. How could I have such beautiful wedding dresses before? I envy you so much. I'm going to dress you up beautifully today and pick out the most beautiful dress for you!"
Consultant Wang cleverly interrupted, "Yes! Your daughter is so beautiful, so you must choose the best wedding dress! We have so many styles in our store, you can take your time to choose. Some customers can't choose, and they like this and that too, so they will order several at once!"
"Really?" Yu Xianyun said, "Then we have to choose carefully. If there are any nice ones, it's okay to have two more. After all, marriage only happens once, and it's a major event in life."
Consultant Wang had been waiting for these words, and now he was even more delighted. Hearing that this family was a big customer, he was even more enthusiastic than before.
Wen Yu stood there motionless, neither curiously looking at the wedding dress like her mother, nor calmly sitting back on the sofa to rest like Wen Yu. Consultant Wang continued to ask Wen Yu, "Ms. Wen, do you prefer a long train or a thicker, puffy skirt?"
"It's all right. Whatever." Wen Yu said.
Consultant Wang paused for two seconds, as if at a loss for words. This was a bit surprising. She was a veteran of the shop, seeing countless customers every day, the picky, the demanding, the detail-obsessed... She could handle them all with ease, but Wen Yu, who was completely undemanding, was a rare sight.
But it's not uncommon. Some women are simply nonchalant. They don't take marriage too seriously, and their expectations for wedding dresses aren't that high. These types of people are the easiest to deal with. Consultant Wang planned to sell all the expensive wedding dresses that would suit Wenyu, and let her try them on one by one.
Wen Yu then spent the next two weeks like a child, constantly being pushed, dressed, and changed by Consultant Wang and Yu Xianyun. She was tall and well-proportioned, and almost every wedding dress she wore looked as if it had been tailor-made for her. Other customers trying on dresses in the store couldn't help but stare at her. The mother of another bride, fascinated by her, lavished praise on her, saying, "Wow! With such a great figure, everything looks great! Look at you, you look like a fairy in your wedding dress!"
Yu Xianyun was so happy that she couldn't stop smiling. She had to be modest: "How can it be so exaggerated?"
"You're her mother, right? Your daughter is so beautiful! She's going to be stunning on her wedding day! As a mother, you must be so proud!"
“No way!”
Yu Xianyun and the mother chatted passionately. Wen Yu caught sight of the happy faces of two middle-aged women in the dressing mirror. She looked away without a word, then suddenly met Wen Yu's gaze in the mirror. Wen Yu had no idea when he'd glanced over. He'd been sitting motionless on the sofa, the wedding album closed and set aside. He stared at her intently for a few seconds, the corner of his mouth curling upward.
Wen Yu looked at herself in the mirror. The smooth white satin clung to her body, outlining the contours of her gourd-like figure. The off-the-shoulder dress, revealing her collarbone and part of her back, looked elegant. The most beautiful and expensive feature of this wedding dress was its long train. Wearing it, Wen Yu resembled a deep-sea mermaid, mysterious, noble, and filled with endless stories to tell.
Yu Xianyun was momentarily drawn to her, and stopped exchanging pleasantries with the other mothers. She walked over, constantly praising, "Xiaoyu, I want this one! It's so beautiful! It's really beautiful! My daughter!"
Consultant Wang also added fuel to the fire. This wedding dress is so expensive, order it quickly!
"Wenyu, come here." Wenyu's mother waved her hand and said, "Come and take a look at this wedding dress. What do you think of it? Isn't Xiaoyu beautiful?"
Wen Yu approached and stood behind Wen Yu. He naturally put his arm around Wen Yu's waist, lowered his head slightly, and whispered in her ear affectionately, "Xiao Yu, you look so beautiful today."
Wen Yu instantly got goosebumps. His hand. The hot breath he exhaled as he spoke. Wen Yu subtly moved aside. But the man and woman standing together in the mirror were a delight to behold. Consultant Wang praised them wholeheartedly, "So beautiful and handsome! You two really are a perfect match!"
She bought the dress with the long train straight away. Later, Wen Yu tried on a few more dresses, and Yu Xianyun and Consultant Wang helped her choose another wedding dress with a full, puffy skirt. This one was even more expensive, and the tulle was covered in diamonds. Under the light, it looked like a Milky Way in the sky. This one was custom-made by the designer. Yu Xianyun paid a deposit, and Consultant Wang took her measurements. They planned to have it air-shipped once it was made.
Back in the car, Yu Xianyun's eyes were red as she said to Wen Yu, "Xiaoyu, Mom must pay for the second wedding dress. It's a gift from Mom. You must wear it and look beautiful on your wedding day. Xiaoyu, you must be happy!"
Wen Yu's eyes welled up. She turned away, not wanting to face her mother. She knew that if she met her mother's eyes, filled with hope and sorrow, she would burst into tears.
After leaving the bridal shop, they didn't go to the next one to try on more dresses. The two wedding dresses were already beautiful enough. Wen Yu had driven here by himself and was driving back now. He had to work overtime tonight and would have to stay in the company dormitory temporarily. Wen Yu took her mother back to the villa, had a simple dinner there, and then drove back to the community. The long train was neatly stored in the back seat of her car. She looked at it in the rearview mirror, feeling a strange feeling in her heart.
Is that it? Is it settled?
She didn't feel any excitement or excitement, her heart was completely empty.
The thunderclouds on the horizon seemed to mirror her current mood, their voices drooping, oppressive, and rumbling. The sky darkened completely, and the world seemed to be plunged into endless darkness in an instant. With a crash, the sky shattered, and a dense, torrential rain began to fall.
Wen Yu's windshield wipers were nearly broken from working so hard, and visibility was so poor that she couldn't even see if there were any cars ahead. She had no choice but to double-jump and trudged forward in the torrential rain.
After an unknown amount of time, Wen Yu finally drove the car safely back to the complex and parked it in the basement garage. It had been raining heavily tonight, and the garage was packed with cars, no one was out. Every car that drove in had a puddle of water on the garage floor, making the entire space unbearably damp.
Wen Yu went upstairs carrying the long trolley.
The elevator dinged. The doors opened. Wen Yu walked toward her home. She suddenly stopped.
There was a man sitting at her door. He was soaking wet, like a poor drowned dog. He leaned against the door, leaving a wet trail where he leaned. There was also a pool of water under him, as if it were his endless tears.
Pan Xianchen looked up at the sound, his wet eyes and face now so peaceful. Wen Yu had no idea how long he'd been sitting there, much less how he'd found his way here. She stared at him in astonishment, her empty heart suddenly filled with bitterness, leaving her speechless.
"I've been waiting for you for a long time." Pan Xianchen was tired of standing and now tired of sitting, and didn't want to get up at all.
Wen Yu took a deep breath and said, "Why did you get caught in the rain?"
He smiled bitterly and said, "They wouldn't let me in because I'm an outsider. I had no choice but to walk in. It's raining so hard. Wenyu, I'm so cold now."
