Chapter 11 He Loves Sales
After leaving the bank, Yao Fanghua took Yao Weimin to the department store with the highest foot traffic.
"Sis, shall we go shopping?"
Yao Fanghua shook her head, "Selling things."
Yao Fanghua took out two watches. "See these people? This watch is fifty yuan for you. You can sell it for fifty-five, sixty, or even more, depending on your ability. Any extra is your profit. If you can't sell it, take it back." She could hand over the selling work to Yao Weimin if she didn't have time later. It would be good for the young man to get some experience, and he knew many people at the machinery factory.
In fact, Wu Peng was a very good sales channel. He was obviously a veteran of buying and selling goods. And it makes sense, since he went to jail for it. It's clear that he had been in this business for a long time.
"Sister, I, I can't, I don't know how," Yao Weimin said timidly, feeling embarrassed and hesitant to speak.
At first, Yao Fanghua was the same way, too shy to go up and talk to people, but she gradually got the hang of it.
"Have you thought this through? How much is your monthly salary? If you sell this watch, you don't need much, just sixty yuan and you'll make ten yuan." Yao Fanghua handed him a men's watch, then took a women's watch for herself and struck up a conversation with a relatively well-dressed mother and daughter. They were neither rich nor poor, making them a perfect match for a watch like the one she was holding.
Sure enough, the mother and daughter were interested in the watch. They had seen a watch they liked in the mall, but hesitated because of the price. Just as they were thinking of going to a smaller supply and marketing cooperative to see if there was a suitable one, Yao Fanghua bumped into them.
The watch looks nice. I tried it on and it works perfectly. It looks almost brand new. It also came with a pretty wooden box with several small flowers carved on it.
"Don't go for seventy, sixty-five is fine with us."
"No, no, how about this, sixty-eight."
There always has to be some back-and-forth haggling, otherwise the other party will definitely think they overpaid. Yao Fanghua has a lot of experience in this regard. Sometimes she's too quick to lower the price, and the other party feels they've lost out, so they keep pushing the price down, or even just turn around and say they don't want it anymore.
After some back and forth, Yao Fanghua finally sold the watch for sixty-six yuan, just as the buyer said, for good luck. The two not only bought the watch, but also several tickets.
Yao Weimin watched as his older sister hooked up with someone, and seeing that a transaction was about to take place, he became anxious. Ten yuan! Ten yuan! He didn't need to sell it for more; if he sold it for sixty, he would make ten yuan. It was just a matter of going up and striking up a conversation. His sister had already given him a demonstration; what was so difficult about that? Yao Weimin mustered his courage and stepped forward, asking, "Want a watch?"
The person waved and quickly left.
Once he'd asked, the second time went smoothly. Yao Weimin went up to him again, "Hey buddy, wanna get a watch?"
Yao Weimin asked everyone he met, approaching them more than a dozen times. Finally, he met someone who was interested, a woman. Yao Weimin stammered as he introduced himself, insisting on a price of sixty-five, and to his surprise, the woman actually bought it.
The moment the money was in his hands, Yao Weimin couldn't help but grin, his blood boiling with excitement. He'd never known making money could evoke such exhilaration and exhilaration. Selling things was truly wonderful; he loved sales!
On the way back, Yao Weimin couldn't stop grinning. With the fifteen yuan he had earned in his pocket, he pedaled his bicycle with boundless energy, as if he had inexhaustible strength.
"Sister, shall we come again tomorrow?" He hadn't sold enough, and now he saw everyone as walking cash cows. He had never felt so warm and friendly from passersby before.
"No, it's almost Chinese New Year, let's talk about it after then."
Yao Weimin was a little disappointed, but then he smiled again when he thought that the New Year was just two days away.
When I got home, I saw that the doors and windows had been replaced.
This is really strange. I asked Mom to change it a couple of years ago, but she refused because she thought it was too expensive. Why did she suddenly change it today? Yao Weimin was full of doubts.
As soon as Yao Weimin and her brother entered the courtyard, Zhong Er approached them, pointed to the window, and winked at Yao Weimin, "Your parents had a fight this afternoon. Come up to your room tonight and let us experience the new window too."
The siblings parked their car and went inside, and found that the atmosphere inside was indeed strange.
Li Chunying and her daughter Yao Fangyuan knitted by the stove, while Yao Deyi huddled in a chair drinking water. All three remained silent. Yao Fangyuan pouted as she knitted. Her mother was really something; she said she was just idling around, and shouldn't she be helping her sister knit a sweater? Humph, she didn't want to work for free.
Yao Fanghua's eyelids twitched when she saw that the yarn in their hands looked familiar. They must have been rummaging through her things again.
"You're back? Wash your hands and let's eat." Li Chunying looked dejected. She thought of Yao Fanghua when she was little. Back then, she and Yao Deyi always argued about drinking, sometimes even resorting to violence. Once, Yao Deyi glared at her, grabbed a small wooden stool, and hurled it at her with a thud at her feet. She was terrified and froze on the spot. Yao Fanghua, so young, didn't say a word, grabbed the stool, and threw it back, spreading her arms to protect her.
Li Chunying cooked dumplings and soon brought out a large plate of them.
"Mom, how much are the dumplings? Give me a plate too!" Yao Weimin thought to himself that he was now rich and powerful.
Li Chunying paused for a moment, then placed the dumplings in the middle. "Eat them all, they're free." She then divided the dumplings into three equal portions, making sure no one took any from anyone else.
Yao Fangyuan and Yao Weimin cheered, "Mom, you're so good to me!"
"Vinegar, vinegar, vinegar! Quick, where's the vinegar?" Yao Fangyuan happily went to get the vinegar and also scooped a bowl of pickled vegetables from the pickle jar. These pickled vegetables are a perfect match for dumplings.
"These dumplings are so delicious! Mom, your cooking skills have improved so much!" Yao Weimin said excitedly as he ate the dumplings, recounting how his sister had taken him to sell watches that day. He described how he overcame difficulties, how he mustered up his courage, and how the people rejected him. He spoke vividly about it, and his eyes lit up when he finally closed the deal.
Li Chunying and Yao Fangyuan stopped eating, their hearts beating faster when they heard the deal was mentioned.
"Hahaha, Mom, you don't know, I made fifteen yuan from one watch!"
Yao Fanghua wanted to cover her face.
Sure enough, Li Chunying dropped her chopsticks, looked at Yao Fanghua, then at Yao Weimin, and then at the dumplings in front of them. "Mom misunderstood. These dumplings cost money, two yuan each. Mom worked so hard. Huahua said they were too salty, so Mom specially added meat and cabbage, and even drizzled some sesame oil on them. It took me ages to chop the meat and cabbage. In this freezing weather, Mom squeezed the water out of the cabbage by hand. Look how frozen Mom's hands are!"
Li Chunying's hands are frostbitten and swollen every year. It's not that making dumplings this time caused them to freeze like this, but that doesn't stop her from talking about it.
Yao Weimin was dumbfounded. He had only told her to cheer her up because he saw she was in a bad mood, but he never expected this...
"And you, Yao Fangyuan, don't even think about getting away with it." She even made three yuan from her sister yesterday.
Yao Fangyuan was so reluctant to spit out the dumpling in her mouth, yet she couldn't swallow it either. She muttered, "Mom, you're so greedy."
Finally, Yao Fanghua took the lead and took out two yuan. Yao Weimin and Yao Fangyuan also reluctantly took out their money.
Li Chunying beamed with joy after receiving the money, finally shaking off her gloom and becoming happy.
"Hua Hua, what kind of sweater do you want? Mom will knit it for you beautifully."
Yao Fanghua: "Don't make it too loose or too tight, and don't make the collar too high. Just keep it simple." She had originally planned to knit a sweater during her free time these past two days, but this is good too, as it gives her time to read.
"Okay, okay, don't worry. Mom is really good at knitting sweaters, I guarantee they'll look good on you. I'll have your sister knit you some woolen pants."
Yao Fangyuan: ...I feel less and less like my own child.
