Chapter 52 Mom Wants to Grow Vegetables
Li Chunying swore that she had never said such affectionate words when she was young.
"Comrade Li Chunying, please speak properly." Yao Fanghua withdrew her hand in a sickeningly sweet manner.
"Mom is speaking from the heart."
Yao Fanghua ignored her mother and shouted at Yao Weimin, "It's getting dark, what are you dawdling for, hurry up and get ready."
Yao Weimin noticeably quickened his pace.
"Hua, what Mom said is from the bottom of her heart."
Just as the installation was about to be completed, Li Chunying kept her eyes fixed on the greenhouse in the yard, unable to move.
"Mom carried you for ten months, raising you from a tiny baby, holding you in her arms and breastfeeding you. When you were little, your teeth came in late, and Mom almost chewed them up to feed you. In those days, raising you was not easy..."
"Chew it up and feed it to me?!" Yao Weimin shuddered, somewhat horrified. "Mom, you've never fed me like that, have you?!"
"Get lost, what's it to you?"
After scolding Yao Weimin, Li Chunying turned her head back, put on the loving motherly face she had just shown, and held Yao Fanghua's shoulders with both hands, wishing she could shake her awake her memories from before she was three years old.
Seeing that Li Chunying was about to launch into another long-winded speech, Yao Fanghua quickly interrupted, "What exactly are you trying to say?"
"Hua, Mom wants to grow vegetables, but you know how crowded this courtyard is. Look at how badly your vegetables are ruined, your greenhouse is a complete waste! Mom is about to open a steamed bun shop, and Mom needs vegetables!"
You're not lacking vegetables, you just don't want to spend money on them!
Yao Fanghua looked up at the sky. She had a good idea at first: to grow vegetables and flowers. But after sowing the seeds, she stopped caring about it. She preferred to read books and do some carving when she had time.
"Mom promises that she will only stay in your greenhouse and will make sure she doesn't make a mess of the house."
"Please have pity on your mother, all I want is to grow some vegetables." Li Chun simply sat down on the ground and started wailing and slapping her thigh.
Li Chunying acted as if she wouldn't get up unless Yao Fanghua agreed.
Yao Deyi and Yao Weimin huddled in a corner, not daring to make a sound, for fear of being caught in the crossfire.
People outside were already peeking in.
"Just grow a little bit of vegetables?"
Li Chunying immediately stood up, wiping away her tears, and nodded repeatedly. "I only come two or three times a week, just to water the plants, fertilize them, and pick some vegetables. If Mom doesn't have time to come, remember to water the plants for her." What if her business is booming and she's too busy to come? Actually, she was also planning to raise some chickens; tea eggs were on her menu. But her daughter definitely wouldn't agree, so she could only take it slowly.
As soon as Yao Fanghua heard about fertilizing, unpleasant memories immediately flooded her mind.
The male educated youth followed suit, jumping down into the latrines and shoveling the excrement onto wooden carts. The smell was so strong that they couldn't open their eyes.
Their job was to spread the fertilizer on the ground.
She vomited several times that day. The smell was pungent, and the truck was full of filth. She would gag uncontrollably even before getting close, and eventually she did vomit all over the ground. She covered her head and face, working while vomiting, the vomit mixed with excrement and scattered onto the ground.
Yao Fanghua leaned against the wall and began to vomit. Just thinking about what happened made her feel dizzy and she couldn't stop vomiting.
What's wrong? Why all of a sudden? As if remembering something, Li Chunying's heart skipped a beat, and she gently stroked Yao Fanghua's back. "You, you and Wu Peng..."
Then she slapped Yao Fanghua hard on the back, "I knew you young people couldn't control yourselves! How could you be so stupid! You make such a big mistake! That bastard Wu Peng, he took advantage of me and ran away without a trace, I, I," Li Chunying wanted to say that she would kill him, but the key now was whether to keep the child or not, and whether Hua Hua knew about her situation.
Yao Fanghua said irritably, "What nonsense are you thinking?"
"No?" Li Chunying was still uneasy.
"no!!!"
Seeing Yao Fanghua's confident assertion, Li Chunying believed her somewhat. "That's good, that's good. Then why did you vomit?"
"You have a sensitive stomach. Don't eat this kind of food." She couldn't stand it.
Li Chunying got anxious, "You can't even tolerate me growing some vegetables? It doesn't bother you at all. I'm your own mother! You'd rather leave the land empty than let me grow any?"
Yao Fanghua suppressed her disgust and said, "You'll be busy with the shop every day from now on, so you won't have time to grow vegetables. Instead of wasting time growing vegetables, you should focus more on the shop."
Yao Fanghua softened her tone and coaxed, "Mom, you're someone who makes a lot of money, you need to think about the big picture. Growing vegetables is such a waste of your time. When the steamed bun shop becomes popular, you won't be able to manage it all."
"Okay, I'll introduce you to a vegetable farmer. Their vegetables are good and cheap, and they even deliver them to your door."
"Really?" She runs the steamed bun shop by herself, and everyone else at home is working, so she can't rely on them. She might indeed be too busy. As for hiring someone, she hasn't thought that far ahead. Right now, she'd rather do more herself.
"Yes, I deliver food to the fan factory's canteen. I guarantee wholesale prices, so it's cheap."
Li Chunying was somewhat tempted. "I was also thinking of selling tea eggs. Do they have whole eggs? And their eggs are cheap?"
Yao Fanghua closed her eyes. Was her mother still thinking of raising chickens here?! Thinking of chicken droppings all over the place, and the beasts that seemed to start squawking incessantly in the middle of the night, if that were the case, she would chop up every single one her mother was raising, boil them all in hot water, and stew them in a pot.
Yes, and they're cheap.
"Oh my, all that studying wasn't for nothing, and being a leader wasn't for nothing either." Li Chunying beamed. "It's settled then."
"I'll have the vegetable farmer come to you tomorrow; you can discuss the details yourselves."
"Okay, okay, the storage you recommended is fine. Mom is almost ready to open the shop, remember to go home and check on Mom's little shop this weekend." She figured she couldn't win against her daughter, so what could she do but go along with what her daughter said?
Speaking of small shops, Yao Fanghua was genuinely interested. She inquired about the opening process, but lost interest after learning that she could only rent, not buy. She preferred the port city Wu Peng described in his letter; just as he said, she sensed an atmosphere of freedom between the lines. Uh, and the atmosphere of money too.
As she was leaving, Li Chunying looked at the greenhouse with some reluctance. She asked Yao Fanghua earnestly, "Do you really think Mom can make a lot of money?"
"You're guaranteed to be successful; you'll be a rich woman running a steamed bun shop in the future."
Li Chunying was so engrossed in the words "rich woman" that she left in a daze.
