Chapter 10

Chapter 10

"You've been making a scene all night, stop it."

Chapter Ten

The lights were bright, and up close he could clearly see the short downy hairs on her face, and inevitably notice her eyelashes that trembled like wings.

Xie Lang: "..."

He licked his lips, pretended not to have seen anything, and got up to walk out.

Xie Lang stood under the eaves enjoying the breeze. At the courtyard gate, Granny Li was disciplining the servants. Xie Wu, who was waiting outside, went up to greet his master when he saw him come out. But just as he reached the eaves and, by the light of the lamp, could make out the master's face...

"Sir, are you feeling unwell?" Xie Wu stepped forward anxiously and asked in a low voice.

Xie Lang snapped out of his daze, shaking his head in confusion.

Xie Wu: "But why is your face so red?"

Xie Lang looked listless, pointed expressionlessly to the bright red lanterns along the corridor, too lazy to even speak. The implication was that he was reddened by the lanterns.

Xie Wu was skeptical, but stared intently at him.

Xie Lang: "..."

"Oh, and go prepare a brazier, it doesn't need to be too big."

Xie Lang whispered the instructions, ignoring Xie Wu's bewildered expression, and added, "Use silver wire charcoal."

Although it is early summer, Liu Qingqing is afraid of the cold. It would be better to put a charcoal brazier in the room.

Now that he knows she has been wronged because of his oversight, he must make amends.

Putting aside past events, he's already married to her; how could he possibly let his wife suffer on his turf?

After Xie Wu left, Xie Lang summoned Xie Liu and questioned him about Liu Qingqing's activities at the Liu residence that day, gaining a general understanding of the situation. After whispering instructions to Xie Liu in his ear, he released the man.

Even if there is no romantic love between us now, it may be the same in the future.

But since it was a marriage arranged by his mother, and even if it was just for his mother's vow, she was someone his mother cared about, and he would treat Liu Shi well.

Not to mention that his mother had been missing for nearly two years, and on her last meeting, she asked him to go see Qingqing. Since then, his relationship with his elder sister and father has become increasingly tense and distant.

Suddenly, a gust of evening wind woke him up, and Xie Lang swallowed his heavy thoughts once more.

Only after Xie Wu carefully returned with the charcoal brazier and handed it to Qingju did she go to the front yard to wash up.

I worked up a sweat in the carriage today.

When Xie Lang changed into a moon-white nightgown and stepped out of the study, Xie Wu, who was waiting at the door, immediately straightened up.

"Sir, where are you going?"

Xie Lang glanced at him: "Where to? Of course, to go back to the room to rest."

Xie Wu was shocked: "You...you are..."

Xie Lang: "I'm going back to sleep in my own main courtyard, is that something to make such a fuss about?"

Xie Wu was secretly surprised, and in his mind, he raised the status of the new lady who had entered Jialan Garden even higher. Rumors circulated in the manor that the lord was indifferent to this marriage and didn't favor Lady Liu, but now it seemed that wasn't entirely true. He was probably too busy with official duties before; now it seemed the lord was quite concerned about the lady's affairs.

They even specifically asked him to find silver charcoal. Silver charcoal is not so easy to obtain; the government can only allocate a few baskets of it each year.

Xie Lang was unaware of Xie Wu's thoughts; he too was deep in thought.

Just as Xie Wu had expected, Xie Lang insisted on returning to his room even as the night deepened and the dew grew heavy, astonishing many on the way. The maidservant waiting outside the courtyard to be punished was filled with unbearable regret.

When Li Mama, who was guarding outside the main room, saw Xie Lang return, she did not seem surprised. She quickly called Qingju down, apologized to Xie Lang, saying that she had something to attend to, and then hurriedly retreated to the corridor.

Xie Lang gently pushed the door open, then closed it again, blocking all kinds of gazes from outside.

Incense was burned in the room to calm the nerves, and this time Liu Qingqing truly fell asleep, her little head no longer hidden under the quilt.

Xie Lang turned her wrist over to take her pulse carefully, then put it back.

The charcoal brazier was placed beside the bed, and it was very warm. Even so, Liu Qingqing's forehead was not sweaty at all, which made Xie Lang frown.

He turned around and opened the window a crack.

I wanted to sleep in the same bed with her to take care of her, but I'm afraid that won't be possible.

Xie Lang's gaze fell on the soft couch by the window, wandering between the couch and the bed. Finally, he stared at her right hand for a long time, pondered for a while, shook his head slightly, and walked towards the soft couch.

When Liu Qingqing woke up the next day, she felt light and refreshed, her whole body warm and cozy, as if she had been embraced by soft, warm clouds all night. Every now and then, she felt as if cool jade stones were gently touching her forehead and cheeks, making her want to reach out and touch them.

She hadn't felt this refreshed in a long time; she even forgot where she was and stretched her back with complete absorption.

Suddenly, he caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye and slowly turned his head.

The latticed window frames let in dappled light, faintly outlining the silhouette of the person beside them.

Liu Qingqing was startled at first, and then she was startled again when she recognized Xie Lang. Just as she was about to move, she suddenly felt his strong arm tighten around her waist.

"Stop fooling around."

Xie Lang rolled over and pulled her completely into his arms, clamping her legs between his long legs to prevent her from moving. He buried his head in her neck, his breath falling into her collar. "You've been making a scene all night, stop it."
