Chapter 3 Heavy Treasure

Fortunately, after a while, the footsteps that had been going away came back.

When the person pushed the door open and entered the room, she could see clearly that this was the boy who had cried with her at the funeral that day.

The boy held a bowl of water in one hand and a sweet potato in the other, and placed them heavily on the bed.

"If you're awake, stop pretending to be dead in the house. The food is in the kitchen, can't you just go get it yourself? If you want me to bring it to you again, I'll starve you to death! Humph!"

After saying these harsh words, the boy turned and ran away.

Shu Miao's lips were already cracked and bleeding, and she didn't bother to answer the boy. She impatiently moved her body to the water bowl and drank it in big gulps.

***

Time flies, and Shu Miao has been in this strange place for about a month.

From struggling to survive in the beginning to carrying a treasure now, only she knows how it feels.

"Then... I'm leaving?" The man's gaze fell on the woman's slightly haggard face, his eyes full of heartache and reluctance.

Before Li Qiao could reply, the sound of faint footsteps entered their ears.

She was instantly panicked and subconsciously pushed the man, "The child is back, you should leave quickly..."

Suddenly realizing that her tone was not very good, she frowned slightly and changed the subject.

"You know, Qiangzi..." His face showed just the right amount of embarrassment, his voice hesitant, wanting to say something but unable to.

The man didn't think much about it and quickly stepped over the threshold as she instructed. When he heard the sound, he turned his head and waved his hand hurriedly.

"It's okay, I understand, Qiao'er, don't worry, I will try my best to make the children accept my..." He was only concerned with expressing his determination, but missed the hint of impatience that quickly flashed across the woman's eyes.

Li Qiao was extremely upset at the moment and kept looking back into the yard, fearing that her son would see this scene.

It was not until she saw that the person coming was a small figure bent over by the firewood that her tense mind relaxed.

The girl was short and thin, with messy hair, making it difficult to see her face.

He moved to the firewood pile, without even glancing at the two people in front of the door.

She put down the bundle of firewood on her back, which was taller than her, with an expressionless face, and walked into the small hut nearby with an indifferent look on her face.

The man saw this scene and his mind moved. He retracted his legs and said, "Huh? Xiao Miao?"

"I think she looks better than Uncle Dashan did back then. I know all that bullshit and unpleasant things out there are just gossips spread by those malicious women. You better not take them to heart."

Li Qiao looked at the man in front of her who was saying flattering words in a self-righteous manner, and the irritation that she had just suppressed surged up in her heart again.

He couldn't help but stroke the fine lines at the corners of his eyes, lowered his eyelids with a sad expression, and shook his head helplessly.

He clearly didn't say anything, but it seemed like he said everything.

The man realized that his flattering words had brought up her sorrow again, and he felt full of self-blame.

He was at a loss and wanted to hold the person in his arms to comfort her, but because of his status, he couldn't do anything extraordinary.

After thinking about it, I suddenly remembered the child Zili I saw a few days ago. When he was looking at other children eating chicken legs, his eyes were full of desire yet restraint. I immediately had an idea.

But when he thought that it was his own hen laying eggs, he couldn't help but feel a moment of pain in his heart.

He hesitated for a moment, but then he thought, you can't catch a wolf without sacrificing the child!

He no longer hesitated, and after carefully comforting her for a few words, he changed the subject a little abruptly.

He then said that his old hen had stopped laying eggs and he planned to kill it and eat it in two days to avoid wasting food. The implication was self-evident.

Li Qiao understood instantly, but still said a few words symbolically, asking what he wanted to exchange for the half chicken.

Seeing that his sweetheart finally smiled, the man instantly felt that everything was worth it and agreed without hesitation.

As for whether the exchange proposed by the other party was fair or not, he didn't care at all. He was only excited about winning the beautiful woman's smile.

This is where Li Qiao's brilliance lies. She never gives anyone a chance to speak.

*

After finally sending the person away, Li Qiao leaned against the gate and breathed a sigh of relief.

After she had composed herself, she was about to go to the backyard to turn over the vacant space, but her eyes accidentally touched a small door, and the words the man had just said flashed through her mind.

In an instant, all kinds of doubts slowly crept into her mind.

She frowned in thought, carefully recalling the little ghost... uh, no, it was the girl's previous expression.

It seems... it's indeed better than when my father-in-law was here...

Thinking of this, her face suddenly changed!

That's not right!

Logically speaking, without the private subsidy from his father-in-law, the child should be even thinner!

Not to mention that the child had a serious illness before. How long has it been since then, and he is already strong enough to go out and collect firewood?

No wonder she always went out with unkempt hair and dirty face. She even thought that this kid was not taken care of by adults, which was why he made himself so dirty.

Now it seems that that dead look was most likely done on purpose to show her!

She said why this child is not like before, crying for hunger all day long!

I originally thought that it was the death of my father-in-law that made me become more sensible, but it turns out that he was guarding against her!

She said that it was impossible for her father-in-law to leave nothing for the child, this was really too much!!!

The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. He couldn't help but rush towards the cabin.

Finding that she couldn't push the door open, this further confirmed her guess.

She no longer cared about what she couldn't say, and yelled at the top of her voice: "You little bastard, open the door for me!" As she spoke, she kicked the door hard.

The already dilapidated wooden door began to shed dust in an instant, and it looked like it would collapse in the next second.

With a "bang", the door was pushed open with great force, and the basket that hit the door bounced back.
