A Royal Mismatch: Untamed Love

-------

Inside the moving carriage, Freya intensely glared at Rowan, who looked relaxed with his eyes closed as if in a deep sleep.

Louis darted his eyes between his daughter and the royal guard, who he believed was innocent and was simply being bullied by his spoiled daughter.

"Freya! You’ve always been a sweet girl, what is wrong with you?" Louis whispered to his daughter.

Freya turned to her father, but her eyes remained on Rowan. "Pa, you know you can still change your mind; we aren’t far from Avon. Why are you leaving with him?" the girl cried, shaking her head as she hit her father’s leg.

"Shh!" Louis gave his daughter a stern look. "Do you want to wake him up with your noisy tantrums? This man needs his rest right now; he has the weight of the kingdom on his shoulders..." His voice trailed off.

Freya watched as her father turned to look at Rowan with a deep sigh, and she palmed her face.

"He must be cold," Louis continued, pulling out a jacket from the bag he’d packed. He used it to cover Rowan.

This time, Rowan adjusted himself, turning his head to the side with a small smile playing on his lips. Louis, who was busy making sure the jacket covered him properly, didn’t notice this, but Freya saw it all.

"Look! He’s even... this doesn’t make sense!" Freya palmed her face. "Why can’t you see what I’m seeing, Pa? He is not who you think he is."

Louis paused in what he was doing and turned, hitting his daughter on the back. "Freya! You’re really crossing the line. I didn’t raise you to be so ungrateful. And what exactly did he do to you? Didn’t you buy him the woolen jacket before he left for war... what has changed?"

Freya opened her mouth to speak, then closed it. She knew there was no point in telling her father anything. It hurt even more because this was the first time she was arguing with her father about anything, they always agreed and told each other everything, until he came along... Freya glared at Rowan again.

"We are going to Eridor... and I want your madness to end in this carriage. I already feel ashamed that my own daughter rejected a great man, and the least I can do is find him someone better... someone who can love him... Now, stay still or go back to Avon!" Louis scolded, his voice very firm this time.

Freya sighed, resting her back on the carriage seat. She knew there was no point in convincing her father anymore. All she had to do was stay beside him as his daughter, just in case he finally realized that Rowan wasn’t so mighty and special. She would then comfort her father. The young girl nodded, closing her eyes as the carriage moved. She listened to the sound it made on the cobblestones until she fell asleep.

"Freya, wake up..." Louis tapped the girl. "We are going to rest here tonight and continue tomorrow morning."

Freya rubbed her eyes. "Mm..." she mumbled, jumping down from the carriage. She noticed that they had already set up the camp where they would be resting for the night. When her eyes fell on Rowan, the girl sneered, looking around for a place to settle down for the night.

Done with unpacking, Freya picked up her dress and soap, ready to bathe for the night. She went to meet her father.

"Pa, where can I wash up?"

Louis, who was getting their dinner ready, rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand. "There’s a river over there. Um... Rowan, show her the river while I make dinner."

Freya’s eyes widened with shock. She couldn’t believe her own father would send her with someone like Rowan alone in the dark. The level of absurd trust her father had in this man was beyond belief, especially since he didn’t realize he was keeping a goat with yam.

"Pa! I can go by myself. Just point the place out to me," Freya declined firmly.

Louis waved his hand dismissively. "Don’t be stubborn, Freya. I’ve stayed outside in places like this before, and you haven’t. This area can be dangerous at night."

"Then someone else can point it out for me," she insisted, her eyes roaming around to other servants who were sent to accompany them.

Louis waved his hand again. "Rubbish! Do you know who is about to escort you? Rowan is not just anyone...he killed over seven men with his bare hands."

Rowan nodded in agreement as the man sang his praises, while Freya glared at him. He shrugged, but the playful smile never left his lips.

Freya turned away. "I’ll just go by myself then! I’d rather a lion eat me than have him watch over me!" she huffed and marched off into the forest like an angry toddler.

"She used to be such a sweet little girl," Louis murmured in a small voice, then turned back to continue cooking.

Rowan squatted, taking a bite from the radish Louis had steamed, then glanced at the path the girl had taken. "Still sweet..." he muttered under his breath.

Back in the forest, Freya pushed through the tall grasses with her tiny hands, trying to find her way.

"What? Follow me? I don’t think that man is really my father..." she muttered to herself, trying to navigate the dark forest. Then she paused.

"Wait... did he charm my father? I knew it! That sneaky, sneaky..." Freya continued until she found the river. She inhaled deeply, running to the bank where she placed her belongings on the sandy ground before removing her dress to wash herself. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

When she scooped the first handful of water and it touched her body, Freya inhaled deeply.

"So good..." she muttered, making sure the water touched her hair and whole body.

Lost in the moment, Freya failed to notice the water quietly dragging her dress and soap, pulling them away from the riverbank and carrying them downstream. When she opened her eyes, it was already too late.

"No... no, give them back!" Freya shouted as if the water could hear her. She tried to run after them, but when something slimy touched her feet, she quickly ran back to the bank. Her legs now covered with sand, she covered her chest with her hands, looking around for help.

Freya pressed her lips together. She couldn’t return to the camp naked, it would be too embarrassing. She decided to pick large leaves and wrap herself in them, then call for her father. Running back into the forest, Freya tried to find leaves, but none were big enough to cover her completely. She used one to cover her chest and another for her feminine core.

"Ah... this is so embarrassing..." Freya bit her lip, dreading the thought of Rowan seeing her like this. She decided it would be better to swim and retrieve her clothes. Nodding to herself, she started back toward the river.

"The waters get rough at night..."

"Ah!" Freya gasped, her heart nearly jumping out of her chest. There, sitting under a tree nearby, was Rowan with his hands behind his head. "Y-you! Have you been watching me while I bathed? You pervert!"

Rowan snorted. "It would have been watch-worthy if there was really something... special," he drawled. Pushing himself up, he started walking toward Freya.

"Stay where you are! Don’t come any closer... If you do, I will scream! I will tell my father," Freya held the leaves tightly to her chest, making her threats as she took two steps back.

Rowan, however, didn’t stop walking. Mirth danced in his eyes as he watched the girl. "Go ahead, scream. I know I won’t be the only one to enjoy the sight..." He tilted his head to the side.

Freya considered it for a moment. As much as she hated to agree with Rowan, he was right if only one person saw her, it was bearable, but if everyone did, it would be shameful. "Please... can you he-"

"Don’t finish that," Rowan interrupted, shaking his head and wagging his finger. "You’d rather lions eat you, so I have no part to play in the fate you decided for yourself."

Freya gritted her teeth, her annoyance getting the best of her. She remembered her words earlier, and for Rowan to remind her of them now meant he was just so petty.

"And even if I wanted to help, I don’t like the look on your face," Rowan added, dipping his hand into his pocket. He turned to leave when Freya ran after him.

"Please, just help me this once," Freya begged. When he turned back to her, she forced a tight smile. "I’m sorry about what I said earlier..."

Rowan sucked his teeth, looking at the girl suspiciously. "I know you don’t mean any of that, and you’re cursing me in your head right now, but... I’m a man who understands chivalry, so I’ll help." He started removing his jacket and stretched out his hand for Freya to take it.

"Close your eyes so I can take it," Freya said calmly.

Rowan scoffed, lowering his hand. "Why should you tell me what to do? It’s my help, so I get to decide how I want to offer it. Close your eyes, and I’ll put it on you..."
