Chapter 285: TWO LOVEBIRDS

[Music Recommendation: Confess to you ~ Lim Kim]

In the dark of night, with the gentle sea breeze lulling everyone to sleep, two figures, one tall and the other short, walked through the empty streets of the kingdom.

Freya rubbed her hands together. She was already feeling cold, and they had been walking a long distance. She was now wondering when they’d arrive.

"Do your feet hurt?" Rowan asked, noticing how the girl was falling behind with each step. "If you hadn’t let the horse run, we wouldn’t be walking right now."

Freya glared at him. This was why they couldn’t enjoy a moment of peace together, Rowan always had something to say that would annoy her. Flipping her hair to the side, she replied, "I’m fine."

Rowan smiled, halting in his steps. He turned and walked towards Freya. When he saw the suspicious look in her eyes as he came closer, he grinned. "Why? Are you afraid I’ll take you right here, or does the thought excite you?"

Freya blushed, her ears turning visibly red even in the dark night. She couldn’t believe how easily Rowan said shameless things. "What are you talking about?" she exclaimed.

"Should I show you what I’m talking about?" Rowan asked, smiling as he teased the girl. He brought his hand forward, ready to touch her face. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Freya moved back, looking around. "If you think I’m going to let you..." Her voice trailed off, was she about to say something shameless herself? She bit her lip. Spending time with Rowan was bad for her, and she knew it.

"Let me?" Rowan encouraged, with a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Go on, let me what?" he asked, tilting his head to the side.

"If you come any closer, I’m going to... bite you," Freya resolved, determined not to let Rowan influence her so easily.

Rowan threw his head back and chuckled, a deep laugh that sounded like the rumbling sky. "Our Freya is becoming even more feisty, and I won’t lie, I’d love to feel your bite, but not now, my lady, unless you don’t want us to continue this journey. In which case, I’ll gladly accept."

Freya’s eyes moved from his to his chest, then back again. "Let’s continue," she said, resuming her steps. But she didn’t get far because Rowan’s fingers gingerly curled around her wrist, pulling her back to him.

"Your feet must be worn out," Rowan remarked with a serious look on his face. Gone was the playful tease.

Freya noticed the seriousness in his voice. She bent down and rubbed her ankle, trying to soothe the pain. The girl inhaled sharply but pressed her lips together, she didn’t want them to turn back just because her feet hurt. She raised her head. "I can still walk. How long before we get there? We’ve been walking for a while now. I’m sure we’re almost there, right?"

Rowan sighed, turning around. "So stubborn."

"No! I don’t want to go back. Let’s continue," Freya whined, thinking that Rowan was about to turn and leave. But she saw him getting down on one knee, and she knitted her brows.

Rowan raised his hand, pointing to his back. "Get on. Let’s have one less pair of feet to worry about."

Freya opened her mouth, then closed it. "On your back? I’m not a child!" she retorted.

"This won’t be the first time I’m carrying you. Or does your memory fade easily? I doubt it, since you’re still young," Rowan sneered, still on the ground.

Freya fanned herself with her hands, touching her warm face. "Then and now are different... Then, I didn’t like you, but now..."

Rowan turned slightly. "You like me? What a day has come- I live to hear a beautiful maiden sing her feelings for me." He could see the blush on her face as he teased her. Rowan couldn’t get enough of the girl’s cuteness.

"What? I didn’t say that!" She ran and hit his back. "Fine! And don’t go complaining about me being heavy." Raising her dress up to her calves and spreading her legs a little, Freya wrapped her arms around Rowan’s neck.

Rowan moved his hands to hold the girl steady before standing up. Then he swayed to the side. "Woah... woah... Now I know why the horse ran away it knew how hea—"

Before Rowan could finish his words, Freya was already hitting his back. "You promised not to complain."

"I didn’t; you just assumed," Rowan chuckled, turning around with the girl on his back. "You’re too light. I should make sure you eat more when we return to the palace. I fear I might break you during our wedding night."

Freya became silent at those words. She pressed her lips tightly as a feeling engulfed her. It felt as if little birds were hosting a tea party in her stomach, and they were all flapping their wings. She buried her face in Rowan’s back because, if she thought about his words any longer, she might combust into red flames. Rowan proposing to her and being caring about it did something to Freya’s body. Without knowing it, she tightened her legs around his waist.

Rowan furrowed his brows at the girl’s sudden silence. He turned his head to the side. "Are you there?" There was still no response. Without warning, Rowan used his hand to smack Freya’s bottom.

"Ah!" Freya gasped, raising her blushing face. "Why?!"

"You were gone for a minute, so I decided to summon you back," Rowan replied nonchalantly, as if he had done nothing wrong.

Freya sighed tiredly, resting her head on his shoulder. "You just do whatever you want, touching a woman’s body as you see fit."

"Not just any woman, my woman," Rowan corrected as he started walking. He noticed the girl’s silence. "If you don’t talk, I’ll take it that you want me to smack you again."

Freya raised her face. "What do you want me to say? You keep saying things that make my heart melt!" she shouted. Realizing what she had just said, she covered her face again, using Rowan’s back.

"I do?" Rowan grinned as he continued to walk in the dead of night with a happy smile on his face. "I’m glad I do."

After walking a little farther, Rowan finally stopped in front of a large wooden barricade that looked like it marked the boundary of the other towns in Avon. He gently set Freya down, making sure she was steady on her feet.

"We are here," he pointed to the place. For a moment, his eyes glinted with a mix of shame and fear. He was about to show the girl he loved where he came from, and he was scared of how she would look at him after.

Freya nodded, looking around. "It still looks... normal," she muttered under her breath, excited for what was about to happen next or the people she was going to meet. She couldn’t wait to see where Rowan came from.

Rowan smiled, a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "I wish it was normal," he replied, taking off his shirt.

"Why are you taking off your shirt?" Freya asked, bringing her hands close to her chest. She looked around to make sure nobody was around to see Rowan undressing in front of her and possibly get the wrong idea.

Rowan raised his brows slightly. Tearing his shirt in two halves, he tied the pieces securely around his arms, then used the band around his waist to tie his hair back.

Freya’s eyes moved down to Rowan’s chest, then back up again, only to be tempted to look back at his broad, sturdy frame. The corded muscles that trailed down to his waist were well-proportioned, fitting his big body.

"We don’t want them looking at us like new prey," Rowan replied, tying his boots properly. He walked towards Freya, and before touching her, he asked, "Can I?"

Freya’s eyes were still locked on his chest. She wasn’t sure what Rowan wanted to do, so she just nodded. Rowan wasn’t going to hurt her, and she knew that much.

With ease, Rowan bent down and ripped Freya’s dress. The harsh sound of the tear caused Freya to gasp. He didn’t stop until her knees were visible, then used his teeth to make the hem look ragged.

Freya pressed her lips together, watching Rowan use his teeth to rip her gown. It did something to her, but that wasn’t what she should be thinking about. She needed to know why they were dressing as if they were heading into a battlefield.

Rowan stood up and ruffled Freya’s hair, grabbing a handful and knotting it with a piece of her dress, leaving some fringes to cover her eyes.

"Still looks like a damsel, but this will do," Rowan muttered, stepping back slightly.

Freya touched her hair, her eyes looking down at her dress. She cleared her throat. "Did we really have to do this? Why?"

Rowan nodded, tucking the small knife he was holding inside his boots. "You’ll see," he replied. "Make sure you stay beside me at all times," he said, taking Freya’s hand as they walked towards the gate. He raised his hand to open it, then paused.

"One more thing," Rowan said in a low voice, his eyes softening as he stared at the girl.

Freya furrowed her brows. Did they need to prepare for something else after doing all this? She couldn’t help but wonder. "What el-" Rowan’s lips captured her own, cutting her words off. It was a gentle kiss but melted Freya’s heart.

"I love you Freya," saying this Rowan pushed the gate open.
