Chapter 8: Crime

As the night deepens, a crescent moon rises.

It was already late to leave the city, and they had been delayed outside the city for a long time. There was no way they could make it to the next post station or inn tonight, so the officer asked the team to find an open space next to a woods to stop and rest.

The officers lit a bonfire and set up an iron pot. Soon, the aroma of broth and baked bread spread out.

After walking and staring at the sun for half a day, the people in the team were already starving. From time to time, someone would glance at the boiling pot and swallow their saliva secretly.

"Don't look at it, this is what you eat." The officer sneered and opened the bundle, revealing a bag full of black-flour steamed buns.

The person who was staring at the pot and drooling immediately showed a look of disappointment.

The officers ignored them and went straight to the Liang family.

He suppressed his sneer and said in a kind tone, "This is the dry food distributed to your family. There is a daily quota. If you don't want to eat it, just leave it aside."

The Liang family maid took the steamed bun, bowed politely to the officer, said "Thank you, sir", then threw the steamed bun aside, unloaded the stove and ingredients from the car, and began to prepare dinner for her master.

The officers then walked towards the Feng and Bai families.

Mrs. Feng took the steamed bun and pinched it with her fingers. The corners of her mouth immediately drooped. When she saw the officer turning to leave, she spat at his back and cursed in a low voice: "You black-hearted guy, you drink meat soup and eat white bread, and you give us this?"

The Feng family was born into a farming family, but even before Lord Feng entered the officialdom, their family had never eaten such shoddy dry food!

Old Madam Feng thought she spoke quietly enough, but the officer, who had already walked several steps away, suddenly turned around and said with a frown, "If you don't want to eat, just starve. It's good enough if you have something to eat. Don't be so shameless!"

"Sir, calm down." Lord Feng stood up hastily and bowed to the officer. "My mother is old and willful and confused. I will control her mouth from now on. I hope you can let her go this time."

The officer snorted and didn't care anymore.

Mr. Feng helped the frightened old lady Feng to sit down again. The old lady Feng's second daughter came over and said in a somewhat reproachful way, "Mother, you can't control your words. Why did you provoke others for no reason?"

"This...I didn't mean it." Old Mrs. Feng shrank her shoulders.

If she had known that the officer had such good ears, she would not have spoken carelessly. Even if she had spoken, she would have waited until the person was far away!

"Boss, it's all my fault. I'll be more careful next time. Please don't be angry..."

Just as Old Lady Feng was explaining to Lord Feng with a guilty look on her face, the Wei family also received their share of rations.

There were fifteen hard black buns, and except for the swaddled little Jiarong, everyone else got one.

Wei Yunlan pinched it with her hand. The bun was dry and almost as hard as the bacon she bought during the day. "It's so hard, it shouldn't go bad easily. Let's put it aside for now. I bought a lot of rice, flour and bacon when I left the city. Let's eat those first."

Steward Wang waved his hands hastily, "Miss, those good things are for you and the master and his wife, we can just eat the steamed buns."

"How can this be?" Wei Maolin shook his neck, which was a little stiff from wearing the wooden yoke for a long time. "Wang Fu, we feel bad that your family of three is willing to suffer with us. At this time, there is no distinction between master and servant. If there is a bite of food, we should share it together."

"Dad is right." Wei Yunlan took over and said, "Don't worry, we have enough dry food for a while. Even if it's not enough, we can use our money to buy some more when we pass by inns or villages."

Just now, while taking a break in the car, she quietly untied the threads of the cloak and saw that there were indeed a lot of things hidden inside.

There were ten gold leaves alone, eight silver notes worth one hundred taels, and two jade pendants with delicate patterns that were easy to sell.

Wei Yunlan guessed that this should be all the money Yuying could afford, and maybe Aunt Xiang had added some. The Xiang family was not a wealthy family, and the Inspectorate was also a poor government office. The Xiang family was not well-off, but being able to offer such a sum of money was enough to show their intentions.

It is said that it is easy to add icing on the cake, but it is truly rare to provide timely assistance like this.

With this sum of money, plus the silver stored in the space, Wei Yunlan felt much more at ease.

The food on the mule cart is enough to last for half a month. You can find opportunities to replenish supplies at inns or villages along the way.

As for the fifteen steamed buns that the guards had given her, she had no intention of wasting them. While she was searching for sausages, she quietly put them away from everyone's eyes and ears.

Anyway, her space is big enough, and the black-faced steamed buns that are being despised now may come in handy at some point.

She pretended to take out five sausages and a can of lard from the secret cupboard under the carriage seat, but actually took out five sausages and a can of lard from the space.

He also asked Ningshuang to take an iron pot, rice and green beans from another mule cart covered with oilcloth.

Nanny Wang beside Gao immediately understood, "Miss, do you want to make sausage stewed rice? I am good at this, let me do it."

Nanny Wang's craftsmanship is one of the best in the entire Wei family. Wei Yunlan naturally trusts her craftsmanship and hands the things over. "Then I'll trouble you, Nanny."

While Nanny Wang was cutting the sausages, the rest of the people also started to move.

Some collected firewood, some lit a fire, while Wei Yunlan and Gao took a few maids to the stream to wash rice and wash the pots.

The other families were also busy with their own work. The Liang family's work was done by the servants they brought with them. The Feng family had no servants following them, but Old Lady Feng's daughters-in-law were all capable and their movements were as agile as those of the maids and nannies.

The Bai family did not have any dry food of their own, so they did not move after sitting down. The whole family, young and old, women and children, gathered together and started to eat with the cool water in the water bag, taking a bite of black flour steamed bun and a sip of water.
