After Zhang Hong shouted the alarm, he ran towards Hou Zongming's room without hesitation.
The lights flickered, and the room was in chaos.
He pushed open the door of the room suddenly, and a strong smell of blood hit his nose.
"Brother! I'm here!"
Zhang Hong shouted to attract attention, but as soon as he appeared, the lights in the room went out and several crossbow arrows shot towards him.
He quickly dodged and narrowly avoided it.
Just as he was dodging, several figures broke out of the window.
The movement was too fast and Zhang Hong couldn't stop it at all.
However, among these people, he saw the woman who had just been brought back to the room by Hou Zongming.
Zhang Hong suddenly broke out in a cold sweat. Without bothering to chase the fleeing person, he quickly walked into the room.
The room was pitch black. Zhang Hong took a few steps, then he stumbled and fell to the ground.
He touched and felt a person lying in front of him.
"Brother! Brother!" Zhang Hong shouted loudly, but there was no response. He hurried to find some lighting to check what was happening in the room.
"Where is the assassin? Where is the assassin?"
Hearing Zhang Hong's loud shout, Hou Zongmin's guards immediately ran over here.
Because of the shadow of the previous assassination attempt, Hou Zongmin's guards never left his side.
But in order not to spoil Hou Zongming's interest, the second brother asked the guards to stay away.
He also patted his chest and assured that Jincheng was his territory, so how could there be an assassin?
But something still happened!
After Hou Zongmin's guards came running over, the second brother and his men also hurried over.
Someone immediately waved a tinder to illuminate the room.
"Brother..."
The second brother ran over, helped Hou Zongming, who was lying in a pool of blood, and called out to him loudly.
Blood was gushing from Hou Zongmin's neck, and there were more than ten arrows stuck in his body.
His mouth opened and closed, but only air was exhaled, no air was inhaled.
"What are you still standing there for? Go find a doctor right away!"
Seeing that the second child was still in a daze, Zhang Hong suddenly became furious. He pushed the second child away and picked up Hou Zongming.
"Third brother, how dare you shout at me?"
Without the suppression of the eldest brother, the second brother became more and more arrogant.
"Second brother, it's all your fault. Why were you drinking wine for no reason? It's you who caused the eldest brother to be killed by an assassin."
"Is this what you call being a good host? And you ended up killing the boss."
Seeing that Hou Zongmin was about to run out of energy, Zhang Hong immediately started to scold the second brother angrily.
"From what you said, I have good food and drink and women to entertain me. Is there anything wrong with that?" The second brother said bluntly.
Zhang Hong was speechless after being asked the question. He had to save the man and hurriedly carried Hou Zongming to the bed and laid him down.
"Brother, I'm afraid he won't survive in this state."
The second brother's eyes turned, "Xiazhou can't be in chaos now. I suggest that someone be elected immediately to lead the Xiazhou troops."
As Hou Zongmin's younger brother and the second-in-command of Xiazhou's 20,000-strong army, the second-in-command had long planned to become the leader of the Xiazhou rebels.
Now that Hou Zongmin died suddenly, the opportunity came to the second brother.
"Oh, I understand, second brother. In fact, the person who really wants the eldest brother to die is you!"
"Well now, big brother, your current situation is exactly what you want."
The second brother's face turned cold: "Third brother, just do what you are told. Why are you asking so many questions? If the eldest brother is like this, he won't be able to live for long."
"We now jointly recommend the Second in Command to be the commander of Xiazhou's troops. We will follow your lead."
At this time, the generals under the second brother came running to watch.
"My eldest brother's body is still warm, yet you're still thinking about becoming the head coach of Xiazhou. Aren't you afraid of divine retribution for doing this?"
Zhang Hong thought about how Hou Zongmin treated him, but he was powerless to change the situation and could only try to gain some advantage with words.
Zhang Hong's roar echoed in the room filled with the smell of blood, like a thunderclap hitting everyone's heart.
The second brother's face, originally flushed with alcohol, instantly turned the color of liver, and a fierce gleam flashed in his triangular eyes:
"Third brother! How dare you! I think you've been frightened by the assassin and started talking nonsense!"
He took a step forward, his finger almost poking Zhang Hong's nose:
"Who wouldn't feel pained when Big Brother suffered such misfortune?"
"But the most important thing right now is to stabilize the overall situation, so as to prevent the army from losing morale and giving the enemy an opportunity to take advantage!"
"You keep accusing me. What's your intention? Could it be that you're in cahoots with that assassin and are trying to take advantage of this opportunity to disrupt Xiazhou?"
"You are slandering me!" Zhang Hong was so angry that his whole body was shaking and his fists were clenched so hard that they made a crackling sound.
He really wanted to smash Lao Er's hypocritical face with a punch.
But at this moment, Hou Zongming, who was half held in his arms, made a more rapid "ho ho" sound from his throat, his body twitched violently, and more blood foam flowed out from the corners of his mouth.
“Big Brother!”
Zhang Hong ignored the quarrel and quickly looked down.
Hou Zongming's eyes were wide open and his pupils had begun to dilate.
He tried hard to focus, his eyes moving with difficulty between Zhang Hong and Lao Er.
He opened his mouth, as if he wanted to say something, but only came out in broken voices.
"Uh...uh..." An unclear syllable squeezed out of his throat.
The second brother's face changed slightly, and he immediately rushed forward and cried out in a crying voice:
"Brother! Brother, hold on! The doctor will be here soon! You can't abandon your brothers!"
He leaned forward seemingly in grief, but his wide robe sleeves just blocked Hou Zongmin's sight from looking at him, and also blocked Zhang Hong's probing gaze.
Hou Zongming's body jerked straight up like a fish out of water, and his last breath suddenly died.
