As soon as Yin Yao entered the room, she lay on the bed in a daze. Her unusual behavior scared her personal maid Qingluan.
Qingluan asked worriedly, "Princess, you look very pale. Do you want to call a doctor?"
The wound on her shoulder had been bandaged, but her face was still a little pale.
Yin Yao shook her head and forced a smile: "I'm fine, your injury hasn't healed yet, go and rest."
After Qingluan left, Yin Yao finally couldn't hold on any longer and collapsed on the edge of the bed.
The moonlight outside the window sprinkled coldly on the ground, just like her mood at the moment.
She originally thought that Zhao Muyun was particularly different.
He respected her wishes, protected her safety, and was even willing to disobey the emperor's order and not force her to marry.
But now she understood that all this was just because he didn't want to marry her at all!
"Political victim..."
Yin Yao murmured and repeated Zhao Muyun's words, tears silently sliding down her face again.
She wiped her face, but couldn't stop the tears.
There were soft footsteps outside the door. Yin Yao quickly wiped away her tears and pretended nothing had happened.
"Princess, are you asleep?" It was Bingbing's voice.
"Not yet." Yin Yao tried to make her voice sound steady.
Bingbing walked in, carrying a tray. "Lord Zhao asked the kitchen to prepare some snacks, saying you might be hungry after the shock you had today."
Yin Yao looked at the exquisite pastries and felt even more sad.
He was nice to her only out of responsibility.
"Thank Lord Zhao for me."
She said stiffly, staring at the ground and not daring to look up, for fear that Bingbing would see that she had been crying.
Bingbing seemed to have noticed something, but didn't point it out.
She put down the tray and said softly, "There's a small garden on the east side of the Commandant's Mansion. The flowers are in full bloom. If you're bored, you can go there to relax."
Yin Yao nodded. After Bingbing left, she finally couldn't help but throw herself on the bed, burying her face in the quilt and sobbing silently.
She recalled the scout captain's tale of Zhao Muyun's heroic deeds in slaying the Tartars and the hardships he'd faced growing up. She recalled his tall, pine-like figure, the sincerity in his eyes when he said, "Marriage is such a serious matter, how can it be forced?"
It all seems so ironic now.
"He doesn't think highly of me at all..." Yin Yao thought self-deprecatingly, "In his eyes, I'm just a troublesome political pawn."
......
at the same time.
Zhao Muyun's study was brightly lit with candles.
"Captain Zhao, as per your instructions, we have arranged more than ten elite soldiers to secretly protect the princess's courtyard."
Tang Yanhai whispered, "Also, the assassins from the Prince's Mansion seem to have vanished without a trace. They appear to have withdrawn from Daizhou, but the rebels are still lingering around Xincheng."
Zhao Muyun nodded, tapping his fingers lightly on the table. "Continue monitoring, don't alert the enemy."
"Boss Zhao!" Tang Yanhai hesitated. "I don't understand why you didn't just tell the princess the truth. She looks... very sad."
Zhao Muyun's eyes darkened: "The less she knows, the safer it will be for her."
"This game is far from over. The emperor, the crown prince, the prince of Jin, Li Jingang, and even the Tartars are all eyeing this marriage."
"If she shows any interest in me, it will only put her in more danger."
Tang Yanhai suddenly realized: "So you said those words on purpose..."
"Be careful, the walls have ears."
Zhao Muyun interrupted him, his eyes glancing towards a dark corner outside the window. "Thank you for your hard work, scouts, these past few days."
"I was supposed to send you to spy on the military intelligence of Prince Zhelan and Prince Loufan, but I never thought I would send you here to act as bodyguards."
"Boss Zhao, how can you say that! Our scout battalion is your trump card. You can attack wherever you want!"
Tang Yanhai chuckled and turned to leave.
Zhao Muyun stood alone in front of the window, looking towards Yin Yao's courtyard with a frown on his face.
Suddenly, he shouted towards the dark spot on the roof: "There's no one here now, you can come down!"
From the roof beam, a dark shadow fell from the sky like a gray swan.
A masked man appeared in front of Zhao Muyun, his eyes full of confusion and shock.
He probably thought he was hiding quietly and Zhao Muyun couldn't find him.
But Zhao Muyun easily discovered it, and when Zhao Muyun saw someone on the beam, he was not panicked at all, and was as calm as if a familiar customer had come.
"How...how did you find me?" the masked man asked.
Zhao Muyun smiled slightly and pointed at the rice paper on the table and said, "You are a capable person after all, but you are so careless."
The masked man looked in confusion in the direction Zhao Muyun pointed, and saw that there was a new layer of dust on the white rice paper.
He was shocked by Zhao Muyun's meticulous observation and stared at Zhao Muyun.
Zhao Muyun saw his expression and was not surprised. "Tell me! You have come all the way from the capital. Is there any important message from His Majesty that you want to pass on to me?"
What!
The masked man was breathing rapidly, terrified beyond words.
How did Zhao Muyun know that he came on behalf of the emperor?
"What? If you don't have anything important to do, please go back! I need to rest." Zhao Muyun's eyes turned cold, and his gaze shot out like a sword.
"Sir Zhao, I'm sorry!" The masked man didn't dare to look Zhao Muyun in the eye. "His Majesty does have a secret letter for you."
After the masked man finished speaking, he took out a wax-sealed letter from his underwear and handed it to Zhao Muyun with both hands.
Zhao Muyun took the letter and found that the masked man did not leave, but just turned his head to the side.
