The next morning a nurse pulled me up and said with a tired face, "Hurry up and get up. We are going to the southwest city battlefield to rescue the wounded."
I got on a truck and followed them. After a while, some soldiers in combat uniforms were fighting the sensory body on a tall building.
Infected bodies continued to pour out of the ground. After the truck stopped in a secluded area, the driver said numbly, "As usual, follow the soldiers' instructions and pull the wounded up."
After hearing this, I quickly entered the building and found a soldier holding a rocket launcher. The soldier reflexively pointed the rocket launcher at me when he heard my footsteps, but put it down after seeing clearly.
Pointing to some places, he said, "There's a person buried under that pile of rocks over there, there's a person on the third floor downstairs, and..."
Before the soldier could finish his words, an infected creature over one meter long suddenly pounced on him and was cut into pieces in front of me. I was so scared that I collapsed on the ground with blood sprayed all over my face.
After the infected killed the soldier, it stared at me closely and slowly approached me. I felt that my whole body could not move. I looked at the alloy knife next to me, but I was not sure if I was too scared so I did not pick it up.
But when I saw the fragments of the soldier beside me, I gritted my teeth and picked up the knife. When the infected body was about to charge over, I decisively took the lead and directly cut his body in half with one knife.
After I finished chopping, I realized what I had just done. I quickly took the knife and carried the wounded on the third floor down. When we got near the truck, only a few people came back.
The driver glanced at me with a numb look in his eyes: "These are the only people who came back."
After waiting for another five minutes, the driver said: "Okay, time to go."
I quickly said, "But it's only been less than half an hour."
The driver ignored me and drove away. On the way, the driver said, "Your name is Vera, right?"
I nodded. The driver asked, "Didn't you realize the soldier you were carrying was already dead? You were gripping the knife so tightly. Did you just kill the infected?"
I said timidly, “Yeah, that’s right.”
The nurses nearby stared at me with wide eyes. The driver said, "You must be a Christian, right? You're from this country, right? Don't you know you're not allowed to carry knives?"
I explained, “But the situation was critical.”
The driver's face darkened and he said ruthlessly, "Then go die. What we're doing now is meaningless anyway. Hundreds of people die every day. What good would rescuing them do? It's just another mouth to feed, another burden. Do you think what you're doing is honorable? And this part of town has been abandoned for today."
I was very surprised: "But there are still soldiers over there."
The driver stared at me with a horrified look on his face. “So, everything is meaningless.”
With that, the driver threw the soldier I'd carried onto his back down. He rolled several times in the dust, his tattered clothes blown to pieces by the wind. I stared at the scene, wondering why it had become like this. Had I betrayed the Lord?
