206: Mother and Daughter (2/2)

A pretty dress, brand new little leather shoes—Lü Yazhi is skillful; besides being a good cook, she can also knit sweaters and hats, always dressing up Xiao Wenqiao beautifully.

Look how well the Wen family is doing; it makes everyone around them envious, jealous, and resentful.

There was a neighbor with many children who used to borrow grain from the Wen family. Lü Yazhi was kind-hearted and never refused. Later, she found out that she was pregnant with her second child.

I was thinking of saving some things for my second child.

I stopped thinking about lending it out.

When pressed by her neighbors, Lü Yazhi never expected that her neighbor of many years would harbor such malicious intentions.

On a clear winter morning that year, Lü Yazhi fell at the entrance of her own yard, where a large patch of ice lay on the ground.

It wasn't raining or snowing, but ice formed in front of her house.

Lu Yazhi, who fell to the ground, lost her baby and nearly suffered a major hemorrhage because she didn't go to the hospital in time.

Later, she was taken to the hospital and doctors determined that she would never be able to have children in her life.

Wen Qiao didn't know the details of the matter, but she remembered her mother often saying in her ear:

You're our only child. Wherever you go in the future, your parents will have to go with you.

Wen Qiao was also feeling upset and couldn't find an outlet, so she blurted out her mother's words about favoring boys over girls.

Lü Yazhi knew her daughter was upset, so she didn't bother to argue.

Instead, they patiently explained.

"Xiao Qiao, it's not that Mommy doesn't like girls. You're also a little girl that Mommy gave birth to. Mommy just doesn't want you to be so tired."

"Su Mei, do you still remember Su Mei? Look at her, kneeling and kowtowing to people for her daughter. All I want to say is, was it worth it?"

Wen Qiao did not argue.

Instead, she asked softly, "Mom, if I were the sick child, what would you do for me?"

"Will they abandon me, or will they spare no effort to cure my illness?"

This question left Lü Yazhi speechless.

She didn't say anything more, but turned around and silently went about her work.

Pack your things, clean the house, and cook dinner.

In the evening, Li Qin came to Wen Qiao's house to ask about the results of the three children's tests.

Wen Qiao knew that Sister Li meant well, so she had nothing to be offended about.

She told her that all three children were healthy and that the youngest child had no heart problems, but Wen Qiao didn't mention that the child was developing slowly or even had a tendency to stop growing.

There's absolutely no need for that.

Sister-in-law Li was just an ordinary woman, but it just so happened that her husband was a political commissar of a division.

Besides, Wen Qiao didn't have the habit of going around telling people about her suffering.

But when it got dark, everyone fell into a deep sleep.

After getting up in the middle of the night to take care of her three babies, Wen Qiao went to the bathroom to wash up and was about to go back to her room to sleep.

I could vaguely hear sobbing coming from my mother's room, a suppressed, muffled sobbing, the kind of crying where someone dares not cry out loud.

Wen Qiao walked over and turned the doorknob.

Lu Yazhi, who is always worried about her grandson and wants to help her daughter take care of the child, rarely locks the door.

The son-in-law is a well-mannered man; he rarely even knocks on his mother-in-law's door, let alone opens it for her.

Lu Yazhi, who was crying, saw her daughter come in and hurriedly wiped away her tears.

"Mom, why are you crying so late at night? What happened?"

Lu Yazhi wiped away her tears and said through sobs:

"It's nothing, Mom is just upset. You're so young, how could something like this happen to you? Mom feels like she can't help you, and I'm so worried."
