Xiao Shengxing lowered his brows and pondered Su Lijin's words, and had a different feeling in his heart.
He couldn't explain it clearly at the moment, so he just thought about it secretly.
"Let's hurry on."
Now that this matter is settled, Su Lijin is about to leave the village.
"Oh no! There's a fire!"
Suddenly there was a cry of alarm. The two turned around and saw that a raging fire had broken out in the village and the farmers' houses were almost turned into a sea of fire.
"How could this happen..." Su Lijin widened her eyes in shock.
Xiao Shengxing frowned: "The fire is too big, hurry up and save people!"
The two men rushed into the village, which was almost turned into a sea of fire. In the fire and thick smoke, they only had time to rescue some people.
"The fire is too big, it can't be put out..." Su Lijin's body was covered with black ash from thick smoke. She gasped for breath and looked at the sea of fire helplessly.
"We have tried our best." Xiao Shengxing was also hurt. There were several holes in his clothes burned by the fire, and he looked a little disheveled.
"Wow, wow, wow...my house is gone..."
A peasant woman sat on the ground and cried, and a child beside her had a dirty face and looked at the fire helplessly.
The other people who were rescued also had sad faces and were very upset.
Su Lijin couldn't bear it, so after thinking for a while, she said, "I want to go to the government office."
"I'll go with you."
The two went directly to the government office. However, after the county magistrate heard Su Lijin's report, he simply told them to leave.
Su Lijin frowned, "Sir, this village has been burned down for the most part, and many people have died. Shouldn't you send some people over to clean it up?"
"Govern? How to govern?" The county magistrate glanced at her and said in a perfunctory tone.
She could hear his impatience and felt dissatisfied, but she still said patiently: "Of course, we will help the villagers renovate their houses and let them rebuild their homes."
"It's not that easy. I know about this. You can go now."
The county magistrate still dealt with the matter perfunctorily and sent the man away with just one sentence.
Seeing this, Xiao Shengxing frowned slightly, and a hint of fire flickered in his black eyes.
Su Lijin beside him was so angry that she wanted to burst into curses, scolding the county magistrate for being cold-blooded and heartless, and only taking the salary but not doing any work.
But after scolding, she couldn't actually solve the problem, so she could only suppress her anger.
Su Lijin remained calm and reasoned with him, saying, "Sir, these villagers are also the people under your rule. You are their father and mother. Now they have suffered a fire and lost their homes. As their father and mother, you should take their affairs to heart."
"There's nothing else we can do now, so I hope you can apply and see if the higher authorities can send some silver to help them."
"Don't worry, they only want enough money to rebuild their home. They won't take anything more."
She repeatedly assured that the villagers would not take a penny more.
However, the county magistrate sneered and said, "If everyone asks the government to pay for the loss of a farmer's house, then the government will have to pay everyone."
"Sir, that's not what I meant. The people were also taxed, and they deserve protection when faced with disaster..."
Su Lijin was about to continue speaking when she was ruthlessly interrupted by the county magistrate.
"Alright, this matter won't be approved by the higher-ups. Leave now, or I'll arrest you for obstructing the government."
Immediately, yamen runners surrounded them, glared at them, and drove them out.
Xiao Shengxing clenched his fists, his dark eyes filled with hostility, scaring several yamen runners so much that they took a few steps back.
Pulling him away, Su Lijin shook her head and said, "Forget it, let's think of another way."
After taking a look at the government office, she felt really discouraged.
The officials here are really inactive. This government office is basically useless. They don't do anything that should be done.
"What are you going to do?" Xiao Shengxing asked after a while, his voice still a little cold.
Obviously, the county magistrate's expression just now angered him.
Su Lijin pondered for a moment and said, "Without the government's allocation of money, the villagers will not be able to rebuild their homes. Their houses have been burned down, their belongings have been lost, and everyone is so strapped for cash that they simply cannot afford the expenses."
This was indeed the truth. Xiao Shengxing remained silent: "But the county magistrate won't care at all."
"Well, I don't expect to persuade him anymore."
Shrugging her shoulders, Su Lijin couldn't help but sigh.
"He refuses to allocate money, then..."
After a while, as if she had thought of something, Su Lijin's eyes suddenly lit up, and she said meaningfully, "Then let's go get it directly."
When Xiao Shengxing heard that she was going to get it directly, he immediately understood that she was going to steal it.
Thinking of stealing government silver, he shook his head with a smile. Only she could come up with this idea.
But he had to admit that when he heard this method, he agreed with it in his heart.
The government silver is taken from the people and should be used for the people. Since the county magistrate cannot issue it himself, it is not a bad idea for them to take it.
The two looked at each other and realized the same thing.
"When are you going to pick it up?" he asked.
"Tonight, when they are sound asleep, we can go get it at midnight."
Her eyes sparkled with excitement.
Time passed quickly and it was already midnight. The moon was shining in the dark and quiet night.
In the moonlight, two figures lightly crossed the wall and sneaked into the county magistrate's office.
After walking through the corridor, the figure came to a room.
The room was locked with a big lock, and it was obvious that the things inside were very valuable.
The two looked at each other, turned over and went to the roof, looking down from the tiles.
