Chapter 3: Concubine Hua's Death

As the night gradually darkened, a scream suddenly came from the imperial garden.

"Your Majesty, Your Majesty!"

The eunuch stumbled into the imperial study with a pale face. "Empress Hua, Concubine Hua, has passed away! Someone poisoned her food!"

Xiao Shengxing sat at the desk and thought for a long time before he figured out who Hua Fei was. He couldn't help but frowned.

Concubine Hua is not favored in the palace, but she follows the other concubines in bullying Jin'er. Who would attack her... and what is the intention behind it?

He secretly clenched his fists and said calmly, "Tell all the concubines in the six palaces to go to the Imperial Garden and find out who has handled Concubine Hua's food."

The eunuch nodded hurriedly, and not long after, all the concubines, including Su Lijin who was imprisoned in the harem, arrived at the imperial garden.

Su Lijin sat on the stone bench with her eyes lowered, feeling quite confused.

How could it be such a coincidence that at this critical moment... Concubine Hua was poisoned to death?

There are so many ways to quietly kill someone in the palace, but this is so blatant, is there some other intention behind it...

Next to her were a group of frightened concubines, talking at once.

"Why did Concubine Hua die out of nowhere? She was always kind, who would have the heart to kill her?"

"I heard that the poison kills instantly, and even gods can't save it... What a cruel heart..."

Kind-tempered?

Su Lijin sneered silently.

Concubine Hua was always flattering the powerful and bullying the weak. She realized that her position as Queen was just a figurehead, so she colluded with Concubine Shulan and Concubine Two, and had been rude and offensive to her more than once. But there really shouldn't be anyone in the palace trying to kill her...

"His Majesty has arrived!"

A eunuch's loud shout came from behind her, and the concubines behind her immediately shut up and knelt down to greet her.

Su Lijin looked up and met that handsome face that she hadn't seen for nearly five years in her previous life. She felt complicated.

She had no feelings for Xiao Shengxing. Although she often went in and out of the harem when she was young, she only had a close relationship with the virtuous prince Xiao Zhaolin, who had a beastly heart. She had no impression of Xiao Shengxing, the prince who was locked up in the imperial study all year round to study.

So when she heard that he was going to make her the queen, she felt only confusion and resentment, blaming him for breaking up her and Xiao Zhaolin...

But even though she was framed to such an extent in her previous life, he still spared her life and never treated her harshly during the time she was in the cold palace.

Several times, he even told her meaningfully that only if she behaved well in the palace would he protect her.

Will it be...

"What do you think about Concubine Hua's death?"

The man's cold and low voice interrupted Su Lijin's thoughts. For some reason, she always felt that those dark eyes would look at her from time to time, with a complicated look.

"His Majesty!"

Concubine Lan suddenly stumbled and knelt at Xiao Shengxing's feet, her tone earnest and sad: "Sister Hua Fei has always been kind. No one in the palace has ever had a grudge against her except the Empress... Besides, as for the crime of murdering a concubine, except, except the Empress..."

"presumptuous!"

Su Lijin frowned and was about to speak, but Xiao Shengxing suddenly shouted and kicked her away: "The Queen has been imprisoned in the cold palace. How could someone poison Concubine Hua? Who gave you the courage to talk nonsense?!"

Concubine Lan froze in place with a pale face, while Concubine Shu behind her had a flash of surprise in her eyes, which then turned into vicious resentment in an instant. Her eyes swept over Su Lijin who was silent, almost imperceptibly.

"Forget it, go away, a bunch of women with long hair and little knowledge!"

Xiao Shengxing glanced at everyone impatiently, then walked away with a flick of his sleeves, leaving the concubines looking at each other in bewilderment.

Su Lijin's slender eyebrows were slightly furrowed as she watched the man leave, feeling a little stunned for a moment.

Is he protecting her?

Since Concubine Lan had clearly said so, he should have questioned her, but he just left like that?

Seeing the concubines around her getting up and leaving one after another, looking at her with somewhat strange eyes, Su Lijin walked towards the cold palace with a calm expression, but her eyes inadvertently glanced at Concubine Lan, whose face was pale.

"What's wrong with Your Majesty today? You're actually doing this for that ignorant bitch..."

Concubine Lan clenched her fists tightly, biting her lips until they were almost white. She was complaining to the palace maids in a resentful tone when suddenly a cold laugh came to her ears.

She felt an inexplicable chill down her spine, and when she looked up, she saw Su Lijin, dressed in a bright red palace dress, standing in front of her, looking at her with a half-smile.

"Here, Her Majesty the Queen greets you!"

As luck would have it, the palace maids behind her were all frightened by the snake that Su Lijin released that day. Now they looked at Su Lijin with pale faces, and their expressions were not much better than Concubine Lan's.

"You all leave. I will chat with Concubine Lan."

Su Lijin curled her lips and spoke in a calm tone, but the coldness in her eyes made Concubine Lan shudder.

"You, you are not allowed to leave, Queen, you..."

Concubine Lan was shocked and tried to grab the palace maids, but they ran away as fast as if they had seen a ghost. Her legs could hardly stop shaking.

"Princess Lan, are you acting like this out of respect for me? Or do you have something to hide?"

Su Lijin looked at Wei Lan who was shivering in front of her, and her slightly cool fingertips slowly fell on her face.

"What kind of ghost could there be in my mind?"

Wei Lan was punished with house arrest and reprimanded today. She hated Su Lijin so much that her fear faded for a moment: "The Queen and Concubine Hua are already at odds..."

Su Lijin curled her lips coldly, and suddenly pinched the woman's jaw. The two poisonous snakes in her sleeves wrapped directly around her wrists, and the wet tip of her tongue swept across Wei Lan's lips coated with thick lip balm.

"These two little guys don't like to hear lies. If anyone dares to offend me, they won't show any mercy."
