Chapter 13 Codonopsis

Seeing that the other person's complexion was improving day by day and that they were able to get out of bed and walk, she didn't want to let them stay in bed and continue to suffer.

Seeing that her daughter was serious and that there was nothing seriously wrong, Wang Fengqin breathed a sigh of relief, but still said with a serious face, "I'll go with you to dig for wild vegetables from now on. I'm worried about a young girl like you walking alone in the woods."

Especially since he came back so late last night, she could only wait in the shack, her heart pounding for a long time.

Jiang Yimian was somewhat helpless and quickly said, "Mother, what will happen to Xiaoye and Xiaonuan if you go with me to dig for wild vegetables? It's really not safe for them to stay here. Besides, you're not well yet, how can you walk?"

There's nothing left to eat near the shack, so if they want to find something to eat, they have to go to a much farther place. It takes a lot of time to get there, and they'll have to climb hills and mountains. If their mother comes along, her body won't be able to handle it.

Before Wang Fengqin could say anything more, Jiang Yimian had to reassure and explain for a while, promising that she would definitely be back before dark every day, before the other party finally agreed.

After breakfast, Jiang Yimian took a sickle and hoe, and carried a basket on her back to the plot of land she had found the day before, where she began to busy herself.

In the morning, we finally managed to clear away the grass that was taller than a person.

It was already noon, and the sun was high overhead, making people feel a little dizzy.

Jiang Yimian wiped the sweat from her forehead and found a shady spot. She ate the wild vegetable pancakes she had brought while looking at the weeds in the field that had been wilted by the sun.

This place is quite far from the shack, and it takes a lot of time to go back and forth. In order not to delay the farming process, Jiang Yimian specially asked Wang Fengqin to prepare food and water for her. She would have lunch here and go back in the evening.

She hasn't told her family about farming yet, firstly because it's still uncertain, and secondly because she's unsure if it will be successful, and she doesn't want to disappoint them.

She was casually looking around when she suddenly noticed clusters of small white flowers blooming above the ditch. Somewhat surprised, she finished her pancake and walked over.

Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that they were several stalks of Codonopsis pilosula that were growing well.

Codonopsis pilosula has the effects of tonifying the middle energizer and replenishing qi, strengthening the spleen and benefiting the lungs. It can be used for people with weak spleen and lungs, shortness of breath and palpitations, wheezing and cough, and internal heat and thirst. It is a common qi-tonifying medicine.

It has similar effects to ginseng, though it's not as good, but finding it in the mountains is quite lucky.

Wang Fengqin was already in poor health, and for the time being, there was no better tonic than Codonopsis pilosula.

Adding some of this to your porridge or soup regularly is good for your health. Gradually nourishing your body will surely help restore its strength.

Thinking about it, she started digging, and dug up half a basket of brownish-yellow roots. Seeing that the sun had set, she started digging again.

This land is close to a ditch, and the soil is moist and fertile, making it suitable for planting corn or rice.

Although it's not big, if properly managed, it can still provide enough food for the whole family.

She can look around and see if she can find land to grow other crops, then she won't have to worry about food on the mountain.

The sun was quickly setting in the west. Jiang Yimian saw that there was still more than half of the land to be dug, so she wasn't in a hurry. She packed up her things and headed home.

Dinner consisted of ginseng porridge, along with stir-fried water celery with pork and a bowl of salty Guanyin tofu. It was a strangely flavored medicinal meal, and Xiao Ye and Xiao Nuan'er ate two bowls before putting down their chopsticks and sitting down to burp.

"Hiccup~"

Ono was a little embarrassed, but his face was full of joy, feeling that life in the mountains was better than life in the village.

Not only can he eat his fill every day, but he can also eat meat from time to time, something he never dared to dream of before.

Seeing Jiang Yimian empty the codonopsis from her basket onto the ground to dry, he quickly went over and asked curiously, "Sister, how are you so amazing? You even recognize medicinal herbs, and you know how to make Guanyin tofu, which I've never even seen before."

Who would have thought that a few common leaves could be used to make delicious Guanyin tofu?

Wang Fengqin paused as she cleared the dishes, a sense of unease creeping into her mind.

Yi Mian seems to have changed a lot these days. Not only does she know so much about food, but she has also become much bolder.

Especially on the day of demanding grain, how could Yi Mian have dared to threaten Granny Wu before? Every time she saw her, she would hide in fear, let alone scare her with a broken table leg.

That day, she thought Yi Mian had done it in a fit of anger, but now that she thinks about it, even when Yi Mian was angry, she wouldn't dare to treat her elders like that.

They lacked the decisiveness to distribute grain without hesitation.

Just then, Jiang Yimian casually said, "I learned from my grandfather. When I was little, I often saw him collecting herbs and secretly learned a lot."

Since her maternal grandfather has passed away and there is no way to verify the facts, even if the family suspects, they have no evidence to prove that she is not the original Jiang Yimian.

Upon hearing this, Ono immediately muttered with some regret, "If only I had gone with my grandfather to gather herbs before, I wouldn't be so clueless now."

Wang Fengqin was amused by this, "Back then you couldn't even walk steadily, how could you be collecting herbs!"

Little Nuan'er had no idea what was going on. Seeing everyone laughing, she quickly chimed in in her childish voice, "Gather, gather what herbs!"

This only made the others laugh even louder, while Ono touched his nose somewhat embarrassedly.

He just wanted to be as capable as his sister, like she knew everything.

Seeing that Xiao Ye was a little disappointed, Jiang Yimian just smiled and said, "If you want to learn about medicinal herbs, I will teach you. I'm sure you can learn."

Upon hearing this, Ono immediately perked up and nodded repeatedly, "Okay, I want to learn, I want to be as good as my sister."

Little Nuan'er quickly chimed in, "I want to learn too."

She wants to know how to prepare lots and lots of delicious food so that her family won't go hungry.

Jiang Yimian just smiled and said, "Okay, okay, I'll teach you everything."

Upon receiving an affirmative answer, the two little ones became happy. They moved a small tree stump over and sat down next to Jiang Yimian, looking at the Codonopsis pilosula on the ground and memorizing those words over and over again.

Looking at the children, Wang Fengqin felt a sense of comfort.

Whether Yi Mian's personality has changed or not, they are still her children. As long as her children are safe and healthy, that's all that matters.

They are all she has left now.

As night fell, the sky, which had been clear for several days, began to rain. The rain pattered on the shack, making it difficult for anyone to fall asleep.

Jiang Yimian and Wang Fengqin lit small torches and placed the grains and vegetables on tree stumps to prevent rainwater from seeping in from outside the shed and wetting the cloth bags, which would cause the grains to become infested with insects.

After doing all this, the two checked the hut again to make sure there were no leaks and that it was sturdy before extinguishing the torch and going back to bed.

They were secretly relieved to have the bamboo bed; otherwise, they would have had to sleep on the muddy ground tonight.

However, Wang Ergou's shack was not so lucky.
