Zhang Duyun only gave a vague reply, touching his chin which seemed to be swollen, and said irritably, "Who are you? Do you think I'm that scary? Why are you attacking me?"
He wasn't injured during those bandit robberies, but he was injured by this young woman. How embarrassing it would be if word got out.
Does he even have any shame?!
Lin Yan'an sneered from the side, "Think about your own words, they're all threats. It's good that the person only bumped into you once."
If he had been intimidated like that, he would definitely not have let the person in front of him off the hook.
Zhang Duyun snorted coldly, glared at the people on the hillside, and said irritably, "Forget it, if she doesn't want to come into the city with us, then let's go in first, and we'll know what's going on inside soon enough."
Xiao Jiang gave her quite a lot of things, so she wouldn't starve to death.
In a few days, when she runs out of food, she will surely go to the city.
Having said that, he called for everyone to set off.
Jiang Yimian glanced at the woman again before getting into the carriage.
As the convoy slowly drove towards the city, the woman hurriedly picked up her bundle from the ground and ran into the mountains.
As she ran, the woman kept looking behind her to make sure no one was chasing her. She circled around the woods several times before finally running into the dense forest.
It's called running, but it's actually pretty much like walking.
She hadn't had a proper meal in a long time and didn't have the energy to run fast at all.
After walking for nearly 15 minutes, she finally saw the familiar cave ahead and quickly ran inside.
The cave was dimly lit, with only a few scattered lights illuminating the scene.
Inside the narrow cave, a little boy sat by a fire, his face unusually flushed.
A man lay on the ground beside him, his eyes tightly closed, his face deathly pale.
When the little boy saw the woman return, he finally breathed a sigh of relief and called out in a hoarse voice, "Mother, this uncle was awake for a little while just now."
The other person hadn't woken up for the past few days, keeping his eyes closed, and he thought his uncle had left like everyone else in the village.
Fortunately, not yet.
The woman was taken aback, her tense face immediately relaxed, she took off her brand new thick clothes and carefully covered the man with them, then handed the teacup in her hand to the little boy.
The little boy paused, took the teacup, and glanced at it. He was struck by the exquisite floral and bird patterns on it and asked in confusion, "Mother, where did this bowl come from?"
They had been on the mountain for more than half a month, surviving on tree leaves and rainwater every day. Occasionally, they could collect dried tree bark to boil some herbs to drink. This was the first time they had seen such a beautiful teacup.
He had never seen it before, even when there were no floods.
The woman reached out and patted the little boy's head, smiling as she said, "Don't go out these next few days. People from the capital have come to Qingnan. These things were given to us by them; there are medicinal herbs and food. We should be able to hold out for a while longer."
After saying that, she opened the bundle and started rummaging through it, only to find that there were quite a few things inside.
Besides a thick stack of flaky pastries, there were several packages of pastries wrapped in oil paper, and even a small bag of rice.
There was plenty of food; if they continued on their previous diet, this amount of food would be enough to feed the three of them for at least a month.
Not to mention the several packets of medicinal herbs inside.
Although she didn't recognize many medicinal herbs, she did recognize a few that were used to clear heat and treat external injuries.
That girl probably saw the herbs she had initially carried at her waist and knew that there was someone injured and feverish next to her, so she specially packed them for her.
The little boy looked at the contents of the bundle, drank the half-empty bowl of tea in his hand, his eyes wide with disbelief, and asked, "Mother, has someone come to rescue us?"
Why didn't you bring them along?
The little boy's eyes shone with hope, and his originally rosy face now looked excited.
The woman just smiled and didn't say anything. She took out the porcelain bottle that was obviously for treating external injuries, then took the teacup and placed it in the leaky spot in the cave to catch water before looking at the man on the ground.
She didn't know the man. She saw him and a young man on the hillside and just wanted to ask him for help. Unexpectedly, he jumped into the flood.
Fortunately, the three of them were lucky enough to be swept downstream to the riverbank by the surging current.
Back then, the floods weren't as devastating as they are now, and the riverbanks hadn't been overrun by the water, which allowed them to survive.
She and Xiaobao were fine, but the man was seriously injured, seemingly from a broken log in the riverbed, with a long wound on his thigh.
Due to excessive blood loss, he lost consciousness.
It was getting dark and raining heavily.
In order to find a place to shelter from the rain and to avoid being discovered by the people in the city, she and Xiaobao dragged the man up the mountain and found this narrow cave, where they hid for nearly half a month.
If she hadn't known some medicinal herbs, this person probably wouldn't have been swept away by the flood, but would have died because of the wound on his leg.
Fortunately, now that we have wound medicine and fever reducer, this person and Xiaobao should be alright.
Thinking about it, she breathed a sigh of relief, unwrapped the rag wrapped around the man's leg, opened the exquisite little porcelain bottle, and poured the medicine onto it little by little.
The cave was dimly lit, and water was leaking nearby, dripping into the exquisite porcelain bowl on the ground.
It looks somewhat out of place with the scene before us.
The little boy just stared at the contents of the bundle and swallowed hard, but didn't move.
After the woman finished applying the medicine to the man, she turned around and saw the little boy. She smiled, the first genuine smile she had given in over half a month.
She reached into her bundle, took out a packet of pastries, and handed it to him, saying, "Xiao Bao, try these pastries."
