Chapter 42 Toona sinensis

It seems to taste like toon.

Jiang Yimian was pleasantly surprised. Following the scent, she looked around and sure enough, she found a Chinese toon tree not far away.

Chinese toon, also known as Chinese toon sprouts or Chinese toon root, can be used to treat some diseases such as colds, rheumatic pain, stomachache, and dysentery.

Many leaves on the tree have already grown large, but there are still many tender red and green buds that have just sprouted, which is the perfect time to eat them.

Jiang Yimian was somewhat surprised. It was already summer, and she thought the toon leaves would be too old, but there were still quite a few tender leaves to eat.

Perhaps it's because of the shaded area, with the dense foliage blocking most of the light, that some of the leaves of the Chinese toon tree are still not fully mature.

Jiang Yimian smelled the aroma of the toon leaves and found it exceptionally sweet. She used to love eating toon leaves the most; they tasted great when stir-fried with eggs or used in soups.

However, some people don't like the taste of toon leaves. Like cilantro, some people love it, while others hate it.

Jiang Yimian picked a lot, almost pinching off all the tender tips on the tree. If she didn't pinch them now, the leaves would become old in a few days, and the taste would be greatly reduced, making them less delicious.

When Jiang Yimian returned, her previously empty basket was now completely full, mostly with raspberries and toon sprouts, mixed with some dandelions.

Xiao Ye and Xiao Nuan'er were delighted when they saw the bright red raspberries; they looked so delicious.

Before I could even reach for it, I was drawn in by the aroma of toon leaves.

Xiao Nuan'er frowned as she looked at the red and green leaves in the basket and asked in confusion, "Sister, what is this? It smells awful. I don't like it."

It tastes weird.

Jiang Yimian was somewhat surprised, not expecting that the little guy could accept houttuynia cordata but not to accept toon.

"This is Chinese toon, it smells very good."

Jiang Yimian took out some toon tips and was about to hand them to Xiao Nuan'er, but Xiao Nuan'er was so frightened that she turned her head away immediately, pouting and saying, "It doesn't smell good, it doesn't smell good, Xiao Nuan'er won't eat it."

Jiang Yimian chuckled, but didn't insist. She put the toon leaves back into the basket and went to wash the raspberries.

The brightly colored, sweet and sour little fruits are very popular with Xiao Nuan'er and Xiao Ye.

Jiang Yimian then took out some raspberries and toon leaves, intending to send them to the Chen and Liu families.

Wang Fengqin stopped her, saying happily, "I've finished making these clothes too. I made one set for Gousheng and one for Daya. I also made two pairs of cloth shoes with layered soles from some scraps of fabric. Take them with you."

The cloth was found in a cave, and there was quite a lot of it. Xing'er and Xiao Yun were each given a piece of cloth, but neither of them wanted it, saying that they had plenty of clothes instead.

She didn't send any more, but this time, when she was making clothes for her children, she thought of making clothes for two other children as well.

Jiang Yimian nodded, took the things, and headed towards the Chen family's house.

Liu Xiaoyun was feeding the chickens next to the chicken coop when she saw Jiang Yimian arrive. She quickly and happily said, "Yimian is here."

Jiang Yimian smiled and saw that the other woman, despite her large pregnant belly, was still coming to greet her. She quickly said, "Auntie, please don't move. I just came to bring you some things. Please don't say you don't want them. The clothes were made by my mother herself, and the rest were found in the mountains. They're not anything valuable."

As Jiang Yimian spoke, she placed the raspberries and toon leaves in the kitchen, and then handed over the clothes and shoes she was carrying.

"My mother said that if Gousheng's clothes don't fit, he can take them to her for alterations."

Without measuring her height carefully, Wang Fengqin only made a rough estimate of the size and deliberately made it a bit larger.

Liu Xiaoyun quickly waved her hand, took the clothes and looked at them carefully, then smiled and said, "How could they not fit? Gousheng grows fast. If we don't make them bigger, he won't be able to wear them in a few days. Sister Fengqin's craftsmanship is really good."

She meant it sincerely. Farmers usually do some sewing and mending, but their skill levels vary greatly. Only Wang Fengqin's skills are praised by everyone in Xinghua Village.

Jiang Yimian smiled and said, "If Auntie feels her mouth is tasteless, she can eat some raspberries, just don't eat too many."

Liu Xiaoyun is now more than seven months pregnant, so eating some raspberries is fine for her. However, she wouldn't dare to give them to someone in the early stages of pregnancy.

Liu Xiaoyun just smiled and nodded, then pulled Jiang Yimian toward their chicken coop. "Yimian, look, the hen has hatched four chicks. They're fluffy and so cute. Take two of them home and raise them. They'll be able to lay eggs when they grow up."

Although she was pregnant and hadn't been working in the fields, she hadn't been idle at home. She had saved up some eggs to hatch chicks, and after accounting for the ones that didn't hatch or survive, she got these four chicks from a dozen or so eggs.

Although she felt a little sorry for the eggs, she was happy when she saw the fluffy little chick.

The little yellow chick was only the size of a palm, a tiny creature swaying behind its mother hen as it walked forward, looking incredibly cute.

Jiang Yimian looked at the four little chicks in the coop and felt a sudden urge to feed them. Then she suddenly remembered the rabbits at home and quickly waved her hand, saying, "No, no, I still have a lot of rabbits to feed. Adding two more chickens would be too much."

In the past, Xiao Ye and Xiao Nuan'er would pick some rabbit grass to feed the rabbits, but now there are too many rabbits, so Wang Fengqin has to pick grass every day, otherwise the rabbits will not have enough to eat.

If two more chicks come, we really won't be able to feed them all.

Liu Xiaoyun didn't insist when she saw that she didn't want it. She just said, "You don't have a chicken coop at home, so it will be difficult to raise them if you bring them back. I'll raise them for now, and you can take them back whenever you want."

Jiang Yimian smiled and didn't say anything more. She took the other woman's pulse to make sure there was nothing wrong and that she could just relax and wait for the delivery. Then she went to see Chen Tiezhu.

Upon seeing her, Chen Tiezhu immediately called out, "Yimian."

Jiang Yimian nodded, noticing that the other person's complexion had indeed improved considerably, and he even seemed to be in a good mood. She simply said, "Uncle Tiezhu seems to be in a good mood. Has your strength returned somewhat?"

Chen Tiezhu nodded with a smile, a hint of joy showing on his stubble-covered face. "I can move my arm now."

After saying that, he slowly raised his arm, but then quickly let it fall back down.

It was such a small movement that the man struggled immensely, and fine beads of sweat appeared on his forehead, but his face was filled with excitement.

Jiang Yimian was somewhat surprised, not expecting that she would be able to move her arms so quickly.

It seems that Chen Tiezhu has put in a lot of effort in rehabilitation in private.

She then took the other person's pulse and found that the previously slow pulse had gained some strength. After giving the two of them a few more instructions, she turned and went to the Liu family's house.
