Chapter 127 On Fairness

One hour ago.

Riverside, Los Angeles.

Joseph politely flagged down a taxi and gave him two choices: either go to the Dolphin Hotel and kill all the forbidden creatures and any reinforcements that might appear later, or he had forty minutes to leave Los Angeles. If he hadn't crossed the border by then, he could either come back to work or die in the stratosphere.

Sergio burst out laughing. He was thinking, "What the hell is this 'natural disaster'? What kind of brain-dead guy are you? Who am I? I can shake half of Europe with a stomp of my foot. Give me forty minutes to prepare, and I'll just call headquarters to send a few nuclear bombs to wipe Los Angeles out."

Then... he encountered a series of indescribable things.

First, I encountered an armed robbery idiot while taking a taxi to the airport. Then, my car had a flat tire. After finally changing taxis three times to get to the airport, I suddenly encountered a drunk driving safety check. This is so absurd! Under normal circumstances, what kind of stupid police department in America would do this kind of thing in the middle of the night?

Left with no other choice, Sergio had to run over. The absurd thing was that because the ticket was unreasonable, a hot-tempered driver went berserk on the spot and started fighting with the group of police officers. Then, a rookie intern accidentally fired his gun due to nervousness, and the bullet happened to hit Sergio's thigh.

The leader finally managed to get the scene under control, but when he turned around, he saw some unlucky guy rolling on the ground clutching his leg and cursing. He ran over to see what was going on, but he also lost control.

"Damn it, I really don't understand."

He was completely stunned. He had never been so unlucky in his life. Even when he was a lackey for the higher-ups at Eoubs, he had never experienced anything so outrageous. If the butterfly effect hadn't been still ongoing, he would have already flown over in a private jet and gotten away at lightning speed.

Have you ever heard of the theory of fairness?

"If someone obtains something that is not rightfully theirs or meets certain conditions in a way that is beyond reason, then they must bear the corresponding consequences."

"The butterfly effect... Hmm, it is indeed a good feature. The power granted by manipulating the 'laws of destiny' is not an opportunity that ordinary people can have, but you have to swallow the consequences it brings."

That is the price, unavoidable and irreplaceable.

When Joseph said those words, it reminded Sergio of something equally unpleasant—his cheap father had used the same tone when he was a child trying to persuade him to get baptized in church.

He's like a charlatan.

But at this moment he also understood that the old man's idea was right. It was a typical case of extreme joy turning into sorrow. Who the hell suddenly gains some kind of heaven-defying ability without any side effects? If that were the case, he would probably be directly at the top and playing a lubricating game with God. Right now, he could only suffer some hardship and get through the so-called cause and effect before he could return to normal.

He refused all offers of assistance from the police and tried to avoid the crowds as he walked toward the airport.

Fortunately, nothing bad happened after that. Sergio arrived at the meeting point soon. His contact had been waiting for a long time and thought that he had been torn to pieces by Joseph and was preparing to return to Europe early to report back.

Even when he actually sat in the cabin, he still couldn't quite believe it. He quickly called the person in charge and asked what this idiot was doing. The thing on the bed was screaming like its kidney had been stepped on.

"Um... I don't know what to say about what happened to you, but I'm very sorry."

"I shouldn't have agreed to let you stir up this mess in the first place, but fortunately you awakened a new characteristic, so implanting that thing into your body was the right thing to do."

"So now we're back on track, right? You can rest easy. Headquarters has given me instructions. I will ensure your safe return and do everything in my power to get you back to Europe."

"By the way, what are your requirements after you come back, like women, resources or something?"

Given Sergio's current status and authority, he could easily accept anything, even asking a top female celebrity to spend several nights with him or doing drugs in the presidential office.

"I'll think about this kind of crap when I get home. Right now, I just want to get some lubrication. I don't know how long these side effects will last."

His brows furrowed, and his expression turned pained as he recalled the events of the past few hours. But he knew that things wouldn't end so quickly, and that old geezer Joseph wouldn't do anything he wasn't sure of.

"Okay, then you should take a nap first. If nothing unexpected happens, we can meet when you wake up."

The person in charge offered a few more words of perfunctory comfort before hanging up the call.

Ten minutes later.

Sergio was drowsy. There was no signal on the plane. His subordinate finally brought him some hard drives containing restricted movies, but the computer crashed as soon as he put them into the card reader. He picked up a book and flipped through it, but he couldn't read it at all. The content was extremely boring and discussed the relationship between people and fate.

He waited and waited, and eventually fell asleep. He didn't know how much time had passed before he was woken up again, told to eat something to calm down.

At this moment, the person in charge called again, asking if everything was normal and if the side effects of the butterfly effect had disappeared. According to satellite positioning, they were about to fly out of the border of the Americas.

"There's probably nothing serious going on. I really don't believe Joseph can fly up and catch me."

Sergio yawned, completely unconcerned, finally about to leave this troublesome place.

Just then, his subordinate brought over the food tray. He nodded, took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, lit one, and took a drag, sighing deeply.

"Sigh... I've certainly broadened my horizons. I've never felt so pathetic before."
