Chapter 227 Midnight
In Yu Jianchu's fantasy, she was now living a peaceful and quiet retirement life ahead of schedule, so even her dreams should be filled with beautiful, harmonious, and joyful scenes.
But that wasn't the case. Whether in Eoubs or within the Realm of Eternal Dreams, her dreams remained hopeless and numb, filled with death, mutated creatures, cries for help, heart-wrenching screams, and those enormous, human-headed observers floating in the air.
This time it was just as dark, and there were even more lingering shadows.
That troublemaking bastard was how they first appeared when the observer discovered them. They were only teenagers, very young, full of rebellious spirit, but their clothes were tattered and worn out, and they were trying very hard to show that they were adapting.
In this nightmare, Yu Jianchu soon discovered that she was not in an execution ground or a banquet frequented by the powerful, but in a forbidden substance recycling room of the research department, where the monsters implanted in her body were huddled in a corner... looking very frightened.
In the dream, Yu Jianchu seemed to want to say something, perhaps like the role she always played, reminding that troublemaker to get out of this place. Didn't she know that unstable species that kill operatives are not sent to the shredder?
But then she fell into another dream, where she was sitting next to the printer, pouring herself a cup of coffee with a strong tonic, which was said to be so bitter that one sip could make a person cry out in agony.
Across from her sat a strange woman, covered in wounds, half her face smeared with blood, looking particularly ferocious, who screamed at her.
"How many times have I told you!" she shouted incessantly, her voice trembling uncontrollably, "Do you know why Eoubs throws people into the fluctuation layer every year? It's all for the sake of completely controlling the forbidden objects! This isn't just idle chatter; these are the A-level beings left behind—"
Yu Jianchu looked at the madman. She had never been one to drink alcohol after work, but after hearing these words, she was unsure whether she should drink coffee or strong liquor.
She had no idea from which event reports these instructions came about; it seemed the elites in those salons had mentioned them, but no one paid attention. Or perhaps they didn't have enough authority to observe, so everyone was just waiting—waiting for orders from higher-ups to kill something, to control some newly emerged taboo, unstable species, or something like that. She appeared unresponsive, her demeanor utterly calm, but her mind was elsewhere.
"I know you disapprove of feeding them, but it's always been tolerated!" the man continued shouting. "Do you know how serious this is? If you leave now, you might have a chance to live. You're supposed to be a person of status—"
Yu Jianchu looked at her with a calm gaze, while the person opposite her began to shout, saying that if they did not run away now, what terrible and tragic things would happen to this place next. She even made an unusually vicious prediction. Yu Jianchu listened for a while and thought that it was no big deal and that it was not that scary.
She slowly drank the coffee in her cup, marveling at how incredibly bitter it was—it was so bitter it made her want to die on the spot.
Then she stood up, smashed the cup, took a shard, and walked toward the crazy woman.
Then, Yu Jianchu woke up.
The room was dark, with no lights on. She didn't know what time it was, and had no memory of falling asleep. Occasionally, the chirping of insects could be heard outside the window, but it was far away and very faint.
She lay there in a daze for a while, then got up, grabbed the hallucinogenic pills on the table without even looking at them, opened the cap, and swallowed them directly, chewing them dry.
Then Yu Jianchu turned on the radio, lay back on the bed, and slowly closed his eyes.
"Good afternoon, listeners. I'm your host, Xiao Yu."
"This Tuesday's segment features an original family comedy voiced by Valerie Bertinelli."
(*Noise)
"I said, doctor, you always say you will cure my cancer, but all you do is have sex with me."
"I'm starting to think that I don't have cancer at all."
"Okay, you're right about intercourse, but I'm sorry, you really do have cancer."
"I am very sad."
(*Sobbing uncontrollably)
"Men are all terrible and they will hurt you, because that's life."
Upon hearing this, I felt a pang of liver pain.
She switched to the next channel.
“Meg, lend me 25 cents so I can ride the toy airplane outside.”
"I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're saying."
"I'm going to make those immigrant kids really jealous of me."
"Hello, here is the 25 cents you need."
(Transition sound effect)
"Haha! Look at me! I'm on an amazing journey!"
"Because my good-for-nothing father still has a lot of spare money after paying taxes."
"Take these; they are all rightfully yours."
"Hello, what are they?"
"This is a booklet about why I bombed you."
(False laughter)
Yu Jianchu couldn't quite put her finger on what was wrong, but she switched channels again and waited for the medicine to take effect.
“I’m telling you, Stewie, I feel pretty good.”
"The worst news is that I can't pay the rent."
"Looks like you need a roommate."
Where did you get so much money?
"I took over the newspaper's children's work."
