Chapter 239 False Harmony

Chapter 240 False Harmony

"Are you sure this is a tunnel?"

The scene inside surprised Sheen.

First, a brightly lit fast food restaurant flashed past the car window. She glanced at it quickly—there was a sign outside the store that clearly stated they could serve alcohol, boxed meals, hamburgers, and glucose drinks. The store's size and decor were no different from any other store in the city center.

Soon, she was overwhelmed by the sights—all sorts of shops appeared on both sides of the road: auction houses, barbershops, currency exchanges, clothing stores, and even cafes. She saw a couple cuddling by the window, just over twenty years old, the perfect time to fall in love. There might even be a school nearby.

Sheen hadn't driven far when a traffic light appeared at the intersection, and she stopped.

This place doesn't look like it's just a simple 15 kilometers long. From the moment they drove in, the entire Sunset Hill seemed to have changed into a movie set. Anyway, she didn't see that this place looked like a tunnel. You could say it was downtown New York City, or some very high-end resort town.

The street scene was still brightly lit. There was clearly no sky here; the dome only obscured the view of building slabs—the only thing that allowed one to see shadows inside the tunnel. But there was still some snow on the ground, obviously not cleaned properly. Several sanitation workers were complaining that no one was willing to help, creating a harmonious atmosphere, as if the mutated corpse seen at the entrance was just an illusion.

Sheen stopped by the roadside and observed for a while, but still couldn't see any trace of a gas station. However, he could find a few supermarkets that sold gasoline, the kind of convenience stores that were open 24 hours a day. Although they didn't have that much gas, it was enough to fill up this tank.

She found an open space, parked the car, and said to Bell Hera, "Okay, you wait here for now. I'm going to check if there's anything we need inside, like sedatives, anesthetics, and gasoline."

The other person remained huddled in the corner, staring at the ID card without looking up, their face full of resistance, as if they didn't want to communicate with anyone.

"That's great," She thought. In the blink of an eye, she arrived in another dimension, and she had to bring a crazy woman with her. She jumped out of the car, locked the door, and didn't bother to say anything more.

Immediately afterwards, she randomly chose a supermarket and went inside. The environment was very clean, and the goods were arranged in an orderly and tidy manner. The cashier behind the counter, wearing a gray uniform, was sorting change. He glanced at the customer and then continued with his work.

Seeing this, Sheen picked up her shopping basket and started taking things from the shelves as she walked in: bandages, hemostatic powder, some high-calorie foods, and other tools that might be useful later.

She quickly wandered around for a while but couldn't find any gasoline suppliers. However, she discovered something strange—some of the products had an extra label on the bottom that, in addition to the brand name, expiration date, and place of origin, stated "0.2 nightmares." Most of the products were priced in US dollars, while others were simply labeled with this thing that said how many nightmares it was worth.

She picked one up and looked at it for a while—it was a psychotropic drug she'd never heard of before, worth 0.5 nightmares. Sheen wondered if this was some kind of local style in Sunset Hill. It was baffling that all the medications for mental health treatments were labeled with this incomprehensible "currency."

Aside from this oddity, this place looked no different from any other supermarket. Before paying, she found the back door of the supermarket—usually a place where internal staff handle expired goods, and this place was no different from the back area of a regular supermarket.

As she was leaving, Sheen noticed that the window at the top of the wall was half-open, and she could see the scene outside if she stood on tiptoe. Without thinking, she went over.

It was unclear where the back area led; the view was completely dark. Unlike the brightly lit streets, the area behind the supermarket resembled an alleyway filled with all sorts of garbage—filthy and chaotic, with a rotten smell seeping in. The energy-saving lights on both sides of the wall were practically useless.

Just then, a man in work clothes burst into the scene. Judging from his build and movements, he was male—he was wearing a rubber mask and carrying a hose to wash the stains on the ground at the alley entrance. Then a truck pulled up, its door wide open, and several people in similar clothes were loading things inside. They weren't wearing masks, though.

Sheen watched for a while and finally realized that these people seemed to have come from a processing plant. However, they were too far away to see clearly what the goods looked like. They resembled beef and mutton, but the skin and flesh were not as bright red. They had already been gutted, and the ribs and internal organs were coldly exposed.

The man in the rubber mask was supervising from the side, and sometimes he would lend a hand. His movements were very neat and efficient. The way he lifted and packed the goods was definitely that of an old hand. Just by looking at him a few times, you could tell that he was used to this job and had at least five years of experience.

However, the next second, he suddenly turned his head to look at Sheen. Even though they were so far apart, the other person still felt the malicious gaze and analysis. He remained motionless, stiff as a corpse, and showed no emotion whatsoever.

Then, the man in the rubber mask slowly turned around and went back to work as if nothing had happened.

Sheen silently closed the window, not knowing how the person had discovered her, nor why he hadn't attacked her—she was prepared to beat him half to death, hoping to extract some information from him, which was a real pity.
