Chapter 295 Mass Production
"Perhaps it is like this..."
"The unobservable record of destiny has truly occurred."
“But it’s also possible that what I see in the future is just a facade.” Gu Heng said to himself, his expression turning manic again. “Excluding the trillions of nodes that I’ve verified in the past, there are still… 27 that are beyond my control. I can’t see a single sign of them. We need Nightmare Points; they are the necessities for finding a way out.”
"You keep changing your story." An Ru was already somewhat numb and just replied perfunctorily, "Just a few minutes ago you were saying that this was all a trap and that we couldn't escape."
"No, this is also part of the testing."
“Okay, okay, so according to you. From the moment we came in, what we’ve been doing is just the prologue, right?” As she said this, she suddenly noticed something moving on the glass wall to her right—like the dent she’d seen in the office before.
An Ru immediately pressed down on Gu Heng, wanting to make use of another forbidden substance in his body.
The creature vanished instantly, like a ferocious beast lurking in the shadows, temporarily sheathing its fangs.
"I am fully conscious now."
"Just like all the things that happen in those 27 seconds that influence the future path of dreams."
“I know where this place is, the third test site. As long as we find the right opportunity, we can get a lot of points—without paying any price. With these points obtained through cheating, we can still leave,” Gu Heng said.
During this pale and exhausting adventure, Anru felt that this was the first time she had truly experienced the power of language.
"Stop fucking being mysterious, just tell me what to do!"
“She died, saying she would hate me for the rest of her life. Before she died, she even slashed my cheek with a knife.”
Gu Heng was of course not fully awake. You can't expect a character in a book who has overstepped too many boundaries to say anything useful—at least not so easily.
"She died sadly, yet she was still so beautiful, and I'm so relieved. Because finally, a woman who understood me completely was there for me until the end, but she clearly cursed me. Perhaps this is the true nature of everyone, we..."
“I really want to kill you right now,” An Ru said viciously.
The other party remained silent for a few seconds.
“The third testing site can be seen as a warehouse crammed with all the half-finished items.” He finally said something useful, but his voice sounded like a dream. “Those cheap items were dumped here because they were too risky, and each one was priced at… a nightmare.”
An Ru Shi once suspected that she was hallucinating.
That sounds like a damn capitalist paradise.
They walked along the main road for a long time, marveling at how large the laboratory was. Clearly, that bitch Bell had spent a lot of money to build it, renting far more than just the offices they had just seen; it was a large area of research staff workspace.
Gu Heng's state was unpredictable. He simply followed the voice that no one else could hear, or suddenly muttered to himself.
An Ru followed behind as usual. The surroundings were deathly silent, with no living creatures in sight, but they could always hear whispers, as if countless eyes were hiding in the darkness, watching them.
The two walked for almost half an hour, and just as An Ru was calculating how far the journey was, those things appeared.
The first thing she saw was a cracked glass wall. For a moment, she thought she was seeing things because it was covered with human mouthparts that were constantly opening and closing.
She leaned closer to look, and the familiar deformed tissue came into full view—it was small, a wrinkled lump, but it was definitely a human lip—when An Ru Shi got close, the thing laughed, which was incredibly horrifying.
27 seconds later.
They saw a similar thing again, this time on a control panel—as if following the evolutionary process, this time it was a complete human face, much more normal than the previous one, but with a furrowed brow, as if deep in thought. And right next to it, close to another identical face.
Another 27 seconds later.
Anru saw many more faces like this, perhaps appearing much earlier, but no one noticed. As if a command had gone wrong, they sprouted in the corridors, on the glass, or on the experimental equipment, like newly formed fruit hidden among such a large area of expensive equipment, growing in large patches like fungi in a rainforest.
As you explore deeper, their appearance becomes increasingly irregular. Some have grown into complete human bodies of varying ages, some are still as small as infants, while others are in the state of old age.
"That's fucking disgusting."
An Ru Shi really wanted to ask Gu Heng what these things were, but after thinking it over, she decided not to ask. The other answers were too shocking, and she didn't want to know them at all right now.
But for a fleeting moment, when she saw a young face emerge from the floor, Anru realized that she actually recognized it—to be precise, these recurring appearances were all the same girl's face.
Bell Hera.
As they passed through laboratory after laboratory, the faces had filled most of the surrounding space, growing from the corridors to the ceiling, and even into the toilet bowls. Most of their eyes were tightly closed, and they had no limbs like hands or feet. As they passed by, one of the faces suddenly opened its eyes, like a switch—at the same time, other eyes also opened, all looking at them.
Gu Heng, like his mother, walked slowly forward, even singing a song. An Ru was almost driven crazy, pushing him several times, just wanting to leave this place as soon as possible.
These open eyes stared at them tirelessly. Whether it was her imagination or not, Anru felt that... they seemed very hungry. Their eyes looked like those of wolves that hadn't eaten in a long time, filled with a thirst for flesh and blood.
All the other passageways were occupied by these faces, and only the main road was relatively empty—they had no choice but to continue forward and enter that strange world made up of faces.
Then they started talking.
She could hear the indistinct whispers of children, the groans of the elderly from their illnesses, and extremely vulgar curses and cheers.
Immediately afterward, amidst this chaotic symphony, Anru heard that exceptionally clear and penetrating voice—saying, "I'm so hungry."
I must have misheard.
That's what she was thinking.
But the further we went, the more faces we encountered, and they all began to shout incessantly.
"I'm so hungry, I ...."
Like a curse.
