Chapter 337 A New Deal
Don't assume that the storytelling in this book will be the same as other works.
Then, then, then.
Everything happening within this fourth wall resembles the content of a cheap fashion magazine, such as "Eoubs' List of Forbidden Substances" or "The Greatest Activist of Our Time," with chaotic page numbers appearing only every three to five pages. Occasionally, an ID card will fall out, or a photo with a link to soft drugs will suddenly appear, trying to sell you all sorts of hallucinogens.
Please, don't waste your time looking through the table of contents—that stuff has already been altered and buried by the "person behind it all." The truth is most likely hidden in a chapter after they enter the Siberian infected zone, or below the image in the book review section.
Yes, don't assume you can get any information immediately—this story doesn't have a real form.
Once the three candidates have obtained the truth, everything will happen about three segments after the plot begins: you must jump back to a certain page, and then jump back again in the middle.
Like hundreds of thousands of unsold items that, after being mixed and matched, can only create about 2,700 sets of consumable items that are of value; or like a million fashionable accessories—scarves, belts, shoes, hats, and gloves—that can't be matched with any clothes.
You have to get used to this absurd arrangement, whether here or in your imagination, at work or in your free time. Because this is the dimension of content you see.
So, follow the prompts and explore.
The story jumps back a hundred years to the damaged Eoubs base, where Heraubel is arguing about who should be the first to enter Wave Layer 2.
The story jumps to fifty years ago, where Roy's father sits on a chair on the lawn, watching the film about Dr. NNa, projected onto the same white wall that serves as an office decades later. The layout is exactly the same; the video recorder and surveillance camera are identical, the outline of the workbench in the film perfectly matches the real one, the floor in the film aligns perfectly with the real floor, and in the film… he's just a child undergoing a forbidden transplant, frantically running to get into the shot.
The plot jumps to Gore's current state of destitution, where he is reassigned by the American Congress to the Eastern Xia branch.
The story jumps to the point where He Yu has grown up, decides to start living independently and move out of his family home, and decides whether to become a famous writer or live a life of idleness.
Ah, please remember this: just like a luxurious "List of Taboos" magazine, no matter how faithfully you follow the instructions to "skip to page X," you will always feel like you've missed something, as if you haven't experienced everything, as if the most important moments have been hastily overlooked, and you will feel a serious sense of loss.
You have to get used to this feeling, because one day you will feel the same way about your own life.
Yes, this is a practice session, not particularly important, just a warm-up.
The story then jumps back to this very moment.
Outside the execution ground, in area A027.
Beneath Roy's feet, a dim, flowing light from a parallel world spread like a living thing, engulfing everything—the arriving operatives, their weapons, the surrounding floor and walls all became part of this monster flowing through the spacetime layer.
The seemingly silent world has shattered.
After that, the cruel devouring power of hell burned up like flames.
Roy could clearly hear screams and wails, which he guessed came from the dignitaries hiding in the salon, but they quickly disappeared.
He moved forward amidst countless streams of light and the spreading, and at some point in the middle of it suddenly flipped over and climbed up an increasing staircase. The unrestrained devouring was still screaming beneath his feet, but he remained unmoved.
Roy inexplicably recalled Gore, his good-for-nothing brother—back when they had only recently joined Eoubs, the kid had said helplessly, "Can't you just not be a hero?" He was standing amidst the wreckage when he said this, just like Roy, having chosen a dead end, yet inexplicably proud. Roy almost laughed in exasperation; what a fucking double standard.
But now that time has passed, he thinks, maybe that silly kid was right. It turns out I was also a thug who disregarded the rules. No one else has taken this dead end, so let him be the one to pave the way.
Beneath Roy's feet, the entire A027 district was in a terrible state of assimilation, like standing on a drifting sailboat.
He inexplicably smiled.
That was fucking satisfying.
The plot jumps to 27 minutes later.
Roy was caught on the special passage leading to the execution site.
He stood on the bare building slab, his feet surrounded by the corpses of B-level operatives, the floor stained red and black with blood and entrails.
At his feet, all the supposedly invincible defense systems were shattered, turning into part of a stream of light that led directly to a special detention area holding forbidden objects. He estimated that if it were broken through a little more, he could see researchers with terrified faces.
At this moment, all the luxurious decorations and trash had been reduced to steaming remains.
He had just lit a cigarette when he heard someone yell from behind him, "You son of a bitch, Roy!"
Roy had no choice but to turn around. There were about fifty fully armed A05 operatives—presumably just transferred by the head of operations, some not even properly dressed—formed in an arc formation with no exits around them.
Well, things have escalated to this point, it's time to clean things up.
“You fucking...you're fucking insane, Roy!” The leader, a familiar face he'd drunk with several times, yelled, “Is it because of Gore?! Please! You two brothers weren't this unreasonable before—”
