Chapter Ten: The Mantis Stalks the Cicada

Who still remembers the rules?

Chen Tianbo was too busy playing the victim to care who had taken the documents to look at them.

"It's simple, we just need to open these boxes."

He Yu turned on the flashlight on his phone, fumbled for a sugar cube in the dark, and ate it: "Otherwise I'll die."

"Then what are we waiting for?" Chen Tianbo said, heading to the bathroom to dismantle the wooden box closest to them. His ears felt like they were plugged with donkey hair, or perhaps he was too nervous, and he didn't take the pitiful crying from before seriously at all.

"Opening the box could also lead to death. If the Box Girl appears, we're all doomed." Qiu Leng reacted quickly and stopped him from doing something so reckless.

It doesn't really matter who drives it, but nobody wants to be killed by an idiot.

You see, things have become quite comical. Even though this group knew their mission was fraught with danger, they still succumbed to fear when death was about to bare its fangs.

Gu Yuan curled up on the sofa, his small and frail figure as delicate as a seedling: "Should we... just stay here? Eoubs will definitely come eventually."

"And then wait for them to kill us one by one?" Qiu Leng replied irritably.

"Who decided this?! Opening it means death, not opening it also means death?!" Chen Tianbo shouted. If all else fails, everyone can kill each other. Rather than dying without knowing why, let them choose an acceptable method.

He Yu took a breath, as if telling himself to calm down: "Alright, I'll go open it."

Upon hearing this, the other three fell silent.

"If they kill each other, Eoubs will use them for live experiments," Gu Yuan muttered to himself.

"Don't worry, I'll kill you before I get arrested," Chen Tianbo said coldly.

Gu Yuan shrank back pitifully, then forced a smile at Qiu Leng, who ignored him.

The only wooden crates in the entire villa were on the second floor and in the main hall. Roughly calculated, there were at least seventy crates, each about half the size of a person. It's hard to imagine that a girl with twisted limbs was locked inside one of them.

He Yu walked up to the wooden box, squatted down, put his ear to it and listened, then pursed his lips, clearly not getting any useful information.

"I've opened it."

Before he finished speaking, he had already grabbed the lid of the wooden box and forcefully lifted it up.

The bottom of the box was empty; there was nothing inside.

"Phew... thankfully it's empty."

Qiu Leng breathed a sigh of relief. He didn't know why He Yu would set an example; He didn't seem like the kind of warm-hearted person he was.

To everyone's surprise, He Yu headed straight for the second floor.

This undoubtedly horrified them, but at the moment only one of them had the courage, and there were still so many wooden crates that hadn't been opened. Eoubs wouldn't allow them to waste their time inside unless everyone was dead.

He Yu remained expressionless, completely ignoring whether they had followed or not. He randomly picked a wooden box, and continued to imitate his previous actions, squatting down, listening intently, and then opening the lid.

It was still completely empty.

Qiu Leng stopped in the hall. After a while, he forced himself to walk up and asked him, "Can you hear if the Box Girl is inside?"

“No.” He Yu bit his nails and walked toward the other wooden boxes: “Anyway, we’re going to open them and see what’s going on sooner or later.”

If you can't hear it, why did you go over there?

Qiu Leng was momentarily at a loss for words. After hesitating several times, he finally followed He Yu's example, walked to a wooden box, and bent down to press his body against it.

The truth is, apart from his own heartbeat, Qiu Leng didn't hear any other sounds at all.

“As those two downstairs said, Eoubs won’t let us sit here doing nothing.” He Yu patted the empty bottom of the box and suddenly laughed: “I’ll try to open a few more, the rest are up to you.”

Qiu Leng was stunned, not understanding the meaning of these seemingly random words.

"Actually, there's no need to rush. There's plenty of food here. If we open a few stalls each day—"

As he was speaking, he heard a girl's wail. The wail was extremely pitiful, and Qiu Leng knew that it was the unique sound of the Box Girl.

"Tsk, looks like I'm having bad luck."

The moment He Yu opened the box, he saw what was inside.

It was a girl whose limbs were completely bent, her body twisted in two, curled up at the bottom of the box in an extremely bizarre posture.

His gray eyes were fixed on He Yu. Someone was calling from behind, but he had no interest in turning around to see what Qiu Leng's expression was.

The next second, he was pulled into the wooden box by the woman in the box. With a chilling cracking sound, blood seeped from the bottom and soaked the carpet.

Life is so equally lowly.

Everyone's fate is the same.

Qiu Leng collapsed to the ground, witnessing that He Yu was beyond dead.

...

13:27.

According to He Yu's words before his death, there were so many boxes waiting for them to open, and no matter how long they delayed, it was a ticking time bomb. They had to take the first step eventually.

Qiu Leng calmly shared his opinion with them, and Chen Tianbo immediately patted his chest in agreement. Gu Yuan kept his head down, occasionally glancing up at the two of them with a numb expression.

After a few minutes, Gu Yuan said that they should choose a dignified way to die. There was a cleaver in the kitchen, and it would be convenient for Chen Tianbo to do it. That thing could easily cut arteries, and even if they choked on their own blood in the middle, they wouldn't feel uncomfortable for long. Anyway, they were going to die either way, so it was better than being dragged into the box by the box woman and squeezed into several pieces.

No one paid him any attention, and Chen Tianbo even said that he was daydreaming and that he didn't want to kill each other now.
