Chapter 3
As night fell, tiny sparks of flames rose from the plains far away from the forest.
On the third day after the first round of closed training began, the freshmen of the First Federal Military Academy had obviously adapted to the new environment quickly and were huddled together to prepare dinner.
The Alphas' fires were filled with all sorts of bizarre beasts or biological limbs. Ten old-fashioned mechas, over three meters tall, were placed at intervals around the camp, though the Alphas showed little regard for them. Some even happily grilled alongside their companions, letting these iron-gray antiques envelop themselves in the smoky aroma.
As one of the Alphas who had no awareness of protecting school property, the baby-faced Phil sat cross-legged on the mecha's dangling mechanical arm, showing a look of disgust, and swallowed the charred barbecue in his mouth almost without chewing.
“It’s so unpalatable.”
He rolled his eyes, and then another piece of meat, still sizzling, its front charred but still clinging to a few small pieces of shell, came flying towards him. The boy swiftly tilted his head, and the barbecue slid down the iron wall beside his head with a "splat", leaving a trail of yellow greasy stains.
The person who took action didn't expect Phil to fall for it, and sneered: "If you have the guts, do it yourself. If you keep talking..."
It’s so dirty.
With a carefree look on his face, Phil automatically blocked out his companion's indescribable and eloquent teachings, and stretched lazily out of boredom.
Then he swung his right hand forward and deftly grasped another piece of barbecue with two fingers. He hissed at the high temperature and stuffed it into his mouth unhappily.
Perhaps the meal was so unpalatable that he had to think of something to distract himself. Phil raised his eyelids and lazily looked towards a secluded corner of the camp. He broached the topic with his companions with some interest: "Hey, about that..." Phil paused before continuing, "Beta."
Herbert, a companion with a dark red hedgehog head, strong features and a long scar between his eyebrows that made him look a little ferocious, frowned. His rolled-up sleeves revealed his muscular forearms. After tearing off one of the beast's legs with great force, he glanced at Phil and didn't seem to want to pay any attention to him.
"Wayne's taking good care of me." Phil leaned on the robotic arm and poked his head out again. He seemed to see something and exclaimed subtly, "Hmm, how should I put it..."
Herbert remained silent as his temporary teammate spoke in a deliberately drawn-out, sickening tone that made him want to punch him.
"She's really cute, like an Omega~"
…As if hearing a bad joke, Herbert sneered and pulled the corners of his mouth stiffly: “That’s really… It’s a pity you could just knock him out directly.”
In fact, before that Beta was controlled by Wayne, no one expected Phil to strike first, quietly sneaking up behind Shigure and knocking her out. Even if it were a few seconds later, the result of Beta being knocked out wouldn't have changed, but considering that this brother had previously spoken to Beta, and he suddenly attacked afterwards, it makes it quite interesting.
And if it was an Omega... Herbert's thoughts drifted slightly to other places while he was lost in thought. Even if an Omega had used inhibitory drugs, the presence of a large number of Alphas would cause a stress response, and he might even be forced into estrus.
The girl was a Beta who could hardly smell pheromones, and none of the Alphas, including Herbert and Phil, questioned this fact.
Phil smiled. Under the night sky of the plain, the white-haired, purple-eyed, childish boy swung his legs carefreely and told Herbert leisurely, "Haven't you noticed? Noah really likes her."
Regardless of whether the other party was listening or not, he shrugged and continued to speak to himself: "I have to take a stand and ensure his safety. Although it would be great if that arrogant guy died like this~"
Ah, it’s Sturga after all.
That was all Herbert thought about it. He was too lazy to respond and silently turned the meat on the grill. After all, time should not be wasted on those trivial things. It is more important to fill his stomach.
"But it would be nice if it really was an Omega... At least I could survive." Phil sighed and held up his cheek. Then, he turned back to his upper body with a little excitement and winked at Herbert with a smile. "Herbert, do you have a favorite O-type? Male or female?"
Alphas often spoke passionately about Omegas, and this type of questioning was particularly effective in fostering camaraderie in the simple, direct nature of Alpha social interactions. So, feeling he wasn't particularly familiar with Sturga and didn't want to be associated with her, Herbert pondered for a moment, his expressionless face etched in thought before he replied coldly, "Female."
"Not bad, not bad, that's just my preference. I've thought about it after we get married. A small, soft female Omega will throw herself into your arms when you come home, and will cuddle lovingly in your arms when she goes to sleep. She'll pull at your sleeves and act coquettishly with tears and smiles... No one can refuse her, right?!"
Under Phil's bright gaze, Herbert coughed, then his eyebrows moved slightly, and he lowered his head calmly, looking at the barbecue in his hand that was once again charred.
“…It’s really good.”
Herbert, who felt that he was not that familiar with Sturga and did not want to have anything to do with him, agreed calmly and confidently.
…
It's not a dream...
Looking at the fireworks dancing in front of him, Shi Yu, who had slept almost all day, wrapped himself in a quilt, hugged his knees and stared blankly like a silkworm cocoon.
Across from him, a boy with red hair and green eyes was frowning fiercely, rolling up his sleeves and wrestling with the fire in front of him. The fire was making loud crackling sounds, and he looked so annoyed that he almost wanted to throw a bunch of unknown objects in his hand into the fire... Beads of sweat dripped from his neck, and the orange-red light made the boy's face look murderous.
Shi Yu watched silently, pulled the quilt tighter with his hands, and quietly moved back a little to avoid being splashed by sparks.
Then he fell into a mental trance again.
The dark shadow in front of her eyes swayed. She weakly touched her stomach with her hand and vaguely heard the boy's voice: "Are you hungry?"
"Um……"
Shi Yu, who had only eaten breakfast the whole day, sobbed a little aggrievedly.
Wayne was silent.
Then she saw confusedly a blurry figure stretching out beside the fire. Shi Yu's moist eyes followed it blankly, like a pitiful rabbit, but she immediately closed her eyes because her head was too dizzy. She lowered her head, clutched the quilt in her hands, and breathed softly. Her face looked unusually pale.
Wayne had a sullen face, his upturned green eyes glanced slightly at Shi Yu's lowered head, and after throwing everything in his hands into the fire seemingly nonchalantly, he turned and left.
In less than fifteen minutes, when he came back, he had several more grilled meats in his hands.
"Don't keep your eyes closed if you're awake." Wayne's rich red hair was wet and stuck to a few strands. He said in an unchanging commanding tone, "Eat."
He tilted his head slightly to the side and stretched out the barbecue, which was still emitting the aroma of seasoning, in front of her.
The boy's breathing was a little ragged, sweat hanging on his damp, wheat-colored skin, and his brows were furrowed. His dark green jacket, which he had taken off, was draped over his arm, and beneath his muddy black vest, one could vaguely feel his well-proportioned muscles.
If Shigure had observed carefully, he might have noticed that the boy had been in a fight.
However, when Shi Yu opened her eyes hazily, she only saw the greasy barbecue in front of her. Her first reaction was to look up at the boy, and a confused look appeared in her dark pupils.
After hesitating for a moment, she took it and whispered thank you.
The girl, who was not used to eating greasy food, took a while to finish the meat. Then she grabbed the military water bottle that the boy threw to her and gulped down half of it. She finally regained some energy after the meal.
He's actually a good person... Let's ask him where he is now. It's not a good idea to keep following them.
Thinking of this, Shi Yu, who was still a little afraid of the other party, held the kettle and timidly glanced at the boy sitting opposite with his legs crossed, but he didn't expect to meet his straight gaze.
…!!
Being caught secretly peeping, Shi Yu's eyes suddenly widened, her hair standing on end in fear. She waved her hands frantically, stumbling over her words as she tried to explain, "I just wanted to... that's right, I'm very grateful...!"
"Get up," he said.
Wayne frowned, uncrossing his legs, which had been stretched out long from sitting cross-legged, and stood up first. He shook his head a few times with an impatient look on his face to stretch his muscles, then placed his hand on the back of his neck, clenching his fingers, and stared solemnly into the distance outside the mecha encirclement.
Shi Yu was almost used to the style of the person in front of her. She obediently pulled up the quilt and stood up. Although her speech was interrupted, she didn't even feel aggrieved.
Under the high and deep night sky, accompanied by the slightly cool evening breeze, the firelight on the plain gradually dimmed like stars disappearing in the clouds.
Shi Yu noticed with confusion how everyone suddenly became busy. Young boys jumped down from high places one by one and sat up from the ground. Curses and the sounds of mechanical parts moving were heard continuously. The surroundings suddenly fell into a tense atmosphere before preparing for battle.
What is this going to do...
She stood behind Wayne, looking around helplessly but unable to speak. After thinking for a moment, she could only tiptoe slightly and look towards the end of the dark blue plain with Wayne -
"Hey, time to work."
Phil smacked his lips, thanks to his height advantage, and was the first to clearly see the black fog spreading like silk in the distance. After shouting "Hey" to the people below, he grabbed the mechanical arm and nimbly jumped into the cockpit of the iron-gray mecha.
Herbert followed him into the cockpit, fastened his seatbelt, and settled into the passenger seat. Phil expertly fiddled with the mech's console, dismissing and reactivating a series of prompts on the small touchscreen without even glancing. At the same time, Herbert raised an eyebrow, hearing Phil's constant, self-deprecating mumblings as he pushed the controls to the limit.
"Since you care so much about her, please don't let her die here. I still..."
Without the time to listen to his chatter, Herbert adjusted the co-pilot system with an irritable look on his face, focusing his attention on the upcoming tide of nocturnal beasts.
The author has something to say:
In order to write the final big scene, a lot of people really had to appear!
So there’s no need to remember their names…they’re all in reserve as the heroine’s wives anyway.
