Li Yuheng slept very soundly.
As the crown prince of the underworld, he had never truly experienced the taste of sleep.
His parents used to pat his head and say, "Our Xiaoheng is a little angel. Little angels don't need to sleep," but he always felt that this statement sounded like a perfunctory way of coaxing a child.
One of the reasons I came to be a dog in the human world is to escape those tedious official documents.
He was determined to see what "sleeping" really felt like.
Even after becoming a dog, he still never succeeded.
At most, I close my eyes to rest, but my consciousness remains clear and suspended, listening to the noise of the street and feeling the rustling of the wind.
But things are different now.
He was so comfortable that he didn't want to move. In his drowsy state, he felt his body moving slightly and rhythmically.
This feeling is both so unfamiliar and so comfortable.
It felt so good that he almost drowned in it, his consciousness blurring as he plummeted downwards.
Just on the edge of being half-asleep, he struggled to open his heavy eyelids.
My vision was blurry at first, then it gradually focused.
It looks like he's being held by someone?
As far as the eye can see, there is a clearly defined jawline, and above that, a profile view.
Her skin was very fair, like fine jade in the hazy moonlight.
Her dark, tousled hair fell down, partially obscuring her forehead.
His gaze involuntarily fell on the man's right eye.
Near the outer corner of the eye, there are two tiny black moles side by side.
It's a bit...special.
Li Yuheng's muddled mind struggled to function.
Who is this person?
Where are we going with him?
He opened his mouth, his throat dry and tight, trying to make a sound to ask a question.
Just as his Adam's apple bobbed, and his voice was about to break through the obstruction...
"Bang!"
A crisp, clean punch, with just the right amount of force, landed precisely on the side of his head.
The force was just right, enough to leave you dazed but not brain-damaged.
This caused an already drunk dog to lose consciousness instantly.
Li Yuheng's head lolled to the side, and he fell into complete darkness, losing consciousness once again.
Shu Bai withdrew his fist expressionlessly. "It's so noisy."
He looked at the dog in his arms, who had gone limp in an instant, and made sure he wouldn't wake up anytime soon before continuing to walk.
He carried Li Yuheng to the dilapidated sofa on the second floor of the slated-for-demolition room, and tossed the dog onto it with less-than-gentle movements.
…
Li Yuheng felt like he was floating in a state of chaos.
He looked down at himself.
It still looks like that beagle, but its paws can't touch the ground; it's as if it's in water or on clouds.
"What kind of place is this..." he muttered, trying to shake his tail, but found it too heavy to lift.
Suddenly a light appeared ahead.
He squinted and walked toward the light source.
The halo gradually expanded, outlining a familiar shape.
It's that black and white calico cat, Shu Bai.
But it wasn't the Shu Bai he knew.
The cat sat quietly in the center of the halo of light, its fur clean and shiny, its eyes calm.
Li Yuheng stopped in his tracks, his ears perked up warily: "Hey, you silly cat, what are you up to?"
Shu Bai didn't immediately retort as usual, but just looked at him quietly.
"You're blocking my way. Move aside, okay? A good cat doesn't block the way."
Shu Bai remained motionless, instead tilting his head slightly as if examining something interesting.
Li Yuheng felt extremely uncomfortable under his gaze; the feeling was even worse than being scratched by the cat.
He took a step forward, deliberately baring his teeth: "What are you looking at?"
Shu Bai finally responded.
“Li Yuheng”.
Li Yuheng was taken aback.
How did the cat know his name?
Before he could figure it out, Shu Bai spoke again, his tone carrying a hint of regret that he couldn't understand.
“You’re actually quite interesting,” Shu Bai said, “but unfortunately…”
"What's a pity?" Li Yuheng asked subconsciously, feeling a strange tightness in his heart.
He disliked the feeling of being judged, especially in that tone.
Shu Bai did not answer, but simply stood up and walked into the depths of the halo.
"Hey! Explain yourself!" Li Yuheng was anxious and tried to chase after him, but his limbs felt as heavy as lead. "What's the pity? You stop right there!"
The sparse white figure grew increasingly blurry, about to disappear into the light.
The nameless fire in Li Yuheng's heart burned brighter and brighter, mixed with a trace of panic that he himself did not even realize.
He exerted all his strength and lunged towards the disappearing figure.
"Bang!"
His head hit something hard, and the pain instantly brought him back to his senses.
Li Yuheng opened his eyes, rubbing his forehead, and found himself still lying on that broken sofa. He had only bumped into the sofa armrest.
The sky outside was already bright, and sunlight streamed in through the glassless window frame, making dust motes dance in the beams of light.
He shook his groggy head; the suffocating and anxious feeling from his dream still lingered.
"What nonsense..." he muttered under his breath, trying to shake the bizarre dream out of his mind.
He scratched at the hole in the sofa with his paw in frustration.
What a pity?
He Li Yuheng has status, ability, and is handsome.
That stinky cat doesn't know anything!
Li Yuheng grew angrier the more he thought about it, and suddenly jumped off the sofa, deciding to immediately go and settle accounts with that arrogant cat demon.
He had to find out exactly what the words in the dream meant!
…
"...Are you crazy? How should I know?"
Shu Bai's tone was filled with undisguised disdain, but his heart sank slightly.
Really?
Did that punch last night damage this stupid dog's brain?
“No.” Li Yuheng persisted, “You have to explain yourself. That dream was real, you were right there, and you even called me Li Yuheng by name. What exactly comes after ‘Unfortunately’? If you don’t explain it clearly today, I’ll…”
He paused, seemingly considering what threat would be most effective, before finally baring his teeth menacingly: "I'll tear down that new parcel locker you found too!"
"Tear it down, tear it down all you want. You think I care?"
Shu Bai looked indifferent, took a step forward, and met Li Yuheng's gaze.
"You must be out of your mind. Do you really need to know? Fine, I'll tell you."
"Too bad you're mentally ill."
The air fell silent for a moment.
Li Yuheng's expression froze as he stared at Shu Bai.
Shu Bai met his gaze without flinching. The slight guilt he felt because of the contract and the punch he received last night was completely suppressed by the relentless questioning of this stupid dog.
He was even prepared for Li Yuheng to pounce on him and fight him again.
However, to his surprise, the stiffness on Li Yuheng's face only lasted for a very short time.
Immediately afterwards, the taut lines relaxed, the corners of his mouth began to twitch upwards uncontrollably, and a short, snicker escaped his throat.
The laughter seemed to have flipped a switch, and he laughed louder and louder until he started slapping the ground with his paws, his fur shaking with laughter.
"Hahaha... Fine, fine!" Li Yuheng laughed and panted, "If you're mentally ill, then you're mentally ill! You know how to talk!"
His reaction was completely unexpected by Shu Bai.
Shu Bai's prepared follow-up attack got stuck in his throat. He looked at Li Yuheng, who was laughing so hard he was doubled over, and a very faint look of confusion flashed in his cat-like eyes.
This stupid dog... is it really not angry?
Or is he just furious?
Li Yuheng finished laughing and stood up straight again.
He tilted his head, looking Shu Bai up and down, his eyes filled with a hint of mockery, yet also a kind of inexplicable understanding.
really.
The person who asked him his name last night and then carried him back to his kennel was this stinky cat.
