Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Fortunately, what Yu Li feared did not happen.

The dispatcher heard the detailed address he gave and contacted the local police station. About five minutes later, Yu Li heard the siren.

The urgent sirens sounded unusually reassuring in the darkness.

Sister You's body stiffened, and she grabbed Yu Li's arm, saying excitedly, "Little Yu, the police are here."

Yu Li nodded, and only after she relaxed did her hand holding the kitchen knife begin to tremble slightly.

A moment later, a commotion came from outside, and the sound of the man kicking the door stopped.

Yu Li heard several "Don't move" shouts, and then someone knocked on the door to his room that had almost been kicked open.

"Is the person who called the police inside? We have already subdued the suspect, and we need you to come out and give a statement."

Yu Li's tense shoulders relaxed abruptly, and she replied, "Yes, please wait a moment."

He and Sister You quickly moved the heavy object blocking the door and went outside.

Sister You was still a little scared, her eyes searching the living room warily.

Seeing this, a policewoman reassured him, "The suspect has already been escorted downstairs by our colleagues."

Sister You finally breathed a sigh of relief, and tears welled up in her eyes once again.

She kept wiping her face with her palms, but the more she wiped, the more tears she shed.

The policewoman helped her to a bench and sat her down. Another policeman with a body camera came over and questioned Yu Li.

Yu Li explained everything that happened after she got off work, and after signing the papers, the police went to question the game streamer.

Then, Sister You choked up as she recounted the details of what happened that night.

Before going to bed, she heard a knock on the door. Since the game streamer next door often ordered takeout at this time, she didn't pay any attention to it.

But the knocking continued for quite a while, and Sister You, puzzled, opened the door without much suspicion.

As soon as she opened the door, there was the man from before, her ex-husband.

The man, being much stronger than her, easily entered the house. At first, he was saying nice things, wanting to remarry her.

But after Sister You refused, the man became enraged and attacked her.

"This is also the reason why I divorced him two years ago. After the divorce, I came to Y City, but I didn't expect that two years have passed and he still won't let me go."

The man made a lot of noise when he did it, and the soundproofing here is poor, so Sister You could hear the neighbors talking as they watched the commotion.

Similarly, those people must have heard the man's voices as he assaulted her, but no one called the police for her.

She has encountered this situation many times.

She understands that most people are unwilling to get involved in other people's "family affairs".

When she asked Yu Li for help, she actually had no hope at all.

Unexpectedly, Yu Li was so determined to help her.

Sister You wiped away her tears and looked at Yu Li with gratitude.

"Thank you, Xiao Yu. I'm so glad you helped me tonight."

Yu Li listened silently, then nodded after hearing this.

The police are taking Sister You to get a medical examination to assess her injuries; Yu Li is no longer involved tonight.

After the group left, Yu Li turned around and saw the knife marks on her room door.

What had just happened stirred up some unpleasant memories for him.

Yu Li frowned, then picked up her phone and left.

He walked around downstairs for a while, and finally stopped at the brightly lit bus stop outside the residential area.

Sitting on the bench, Yu Li let out a long breath.

When he saw Sister You rush out of the room, he felt as if he had returned to the age of twelve.

-

That year, Yu Li's father died while saving someone. His mother was busy handling the funeral arrangements and working to earn money, so she inevitably couldn't take care of him and his sister.

My younger sister is still in kindergarten, and she gets out of school an hour earlier than Yu Li, who is in elementary school.

When Yu Li went to pick up her younger sister after school, most of the other children in the kindergarten had already left.

Over time, the teacher in my sister's class became somewhat dissatisfied.

At this time, my aunt went back to her hometown to help pick up and drop off my younger sister and help my mother take care of the two of them.

Yu Li still remembers that her aunt fled back to her hometown because she was a victim of domestic violence.

But not long after, the man also came over.

Like Sister You's ex-husband, that man initially said all sorts of nice things and made various guarantees, making it seem as if he had reformed.

But one day, when Yu Li returned home from school, she saw her aunt, covered in bruises, running out of the house with her younger sister, followed closely by the man.

Without thinking, Yu Li immediately stood in front of her aunt, trying to help her.

But he was too young then, and the man easily shook him off and grabbed his aunt behind him.

My aunt was seriously injured that day, and Yu Li and her younger sister were also slightly injured.

Afterwards, the aunt felt that she had caused them trouble, and despite his and her mother's advice, she resolutely went to another city.

This departure will be a final farewell.

Less than a year later, Yu Li and her mother received news of her aunt's suicide.

In her suicide note, she wrote that she had heard that the man was again asking about her, and she felt that she could not escape. She had already suffered a mental breakdown, so she chose to give up her life.

This matter has always been on Yu Li's mind, and she can't let it go.

At twelve, he couldn't help his aunt, but thankfully, at twenty-one, he was able to help Sister You.

However, Yu Li wasn't very happy.

He sat on a bench at the bus stop, head down, silently shedding tears.

When Sister You kept murmuring "why," he really wanted to ask her too.

Why is it that even though my aunt has escaped back home and gone so far, she still can't escape the shadow cast by that man?

At three in the morning, there were hardly any people passing by on the street, and Yu Li let herself cry for a while.

Not long after, he saw a black luxury car stop in front of him.

He paused slightly, his shoulders tensing as he wondered if the car owner had seen him crying, and whether this person was a dangerous individual in the middle of the night. Should he get up and leave immediately?

Just as he was anxiously lost in thought, Yu Li heard the car window roll down, and then someone called his name.

"Yu Li".

That cold, distant voice was so familiar.

It was a banquet in the courtyard.

Yu Li shuddered, and now he dared not look up, afraid that Yan Shiting would see his tear-streaked face.

But Yu Li himself didn't realize that the moment he heard Yan Shiting's voice, the panic in his heart quickly dissipated, leaving only tension.

A gentle night breeze dispelled the summer heat.

Yu Li sat awkwardly with her head down, her tears dried by the wind, leaving her face feeling slightly sore.

The passenger door opened, and Butler He got out and handed Yu Li a pack of wet wipes.

Although her embarrassment had been discovered, wet wipes were exactly what Yu Li needed right now.

He thanked Butler He, took the pack of wet wipes, and then heard Yan Shiting's voice: "Get in the car."

"Ah..." Yu Li was stunned, wondering why Yan Shiting had come to find him in the middle of the night, and hesitated for a moment.

The next second, the phone rang.

Yu Li took out her phone with the cracked screen and saw that it was a WeChat call from Yan Sui.

Yu Li paused for a moment, then hung up and typed: 【What's wrong?】

He didn't want Yan Sui to know that he had cried.

[Little Fish, has something happened where you live?]

I saw your back in a game streamer's livestream. Are you okay?

Yu Li was taken aback.

Is it the game streamer who shares an apartment with him and Sister You?

He recalled that when the police questioned the game streamer, the streamer seemed to be holding up his phone.

He pulled out a wet wipe and hastily wiped his face, replying: "I'm fine, it's all taken care of."

"You're still awake?"

Yan Sui: [It's vacation time, so I'm living like a ghost.]

"You must have been terrified. I heard from the streamer that the assailant had a knife and almost smashed the door open. I just called my brother and asked him to send a driver to pick you up. You can stay at my place tonight."

I know you're probably too shy to reach out to my brother, so I took the liberty of doing it myself, haha~

Yu Li was stunned.

Yan Sui said he would send a driver to pick them up, so why did Yan Shiting come along?

Are you really that concerned about your younger brother's requests?

He thanked Yan Sui and stood up from the bench.

Hesitantly walking to the car, Yu Li still asked in a low voice, "President Yan, did Yan Sui send you to pick me up?"

In the bright light of the bus stop, Yu Li saw Yan Shiting frown impatiently, his jawline tense: "Hmm."

Yu Li said again, "I'm sorry to have troubled you again."

Yan Shiting replied to him in a low voice with two words: "It's nothing."

He was incredibly economical with words.

Yu Li breathed a sigh of relief.

Butler He had already sat back in the passenger seat.

Yu Li looked around and had no choice but to open the back door and sit next to Yan Shiting.

The car started smoothly, the neon lights on the street were blocked by the car window film, and the afterimages that swept past did not disturb the people in the car.

As she got further and further away from the neighborhood, Yu Li's heavy heart began to ease slightly.

He recalled Yan Sui's words and suddenly felt a little confused.

After he returned, the game streamer's door remained tightly closed. The streamer was only able to capture his back view after the police arrived.

Yan Sui came across the live stream at that time and then called Yan Shiting.

Yanjia Manor is quite far from Jinjiang Road, about an hour's drive away.

Has more than an hour passed since the police arrived?

When Yu Li replied to the message, he saw the time; it was a little over an hour ago, which should have been when he just got home.

It's probably because it was late at night and there were fewer cars on the road, so the travel time was shorter.

Yu Li didn't think about it any further.

He is prone to falling asleep as soon as he gets on a bus, and coupled with his physical and mental exhaustion, and the fact that he was in a safe environment, he soon began to doze off against the window.

Gradually, he fell into a deep sleep.

As they passed a speed bump, the car swayed slightly, and Yu Li's head hit the car window with a dull "bang".

Even so, Yu Li only slightly furrowed her brows and did not wake up.

Yan Shiting kept an eye on things.

As the car approached another speed bump, Yan Shiting subconsciously reached out and slipped his hand behind Yu Li's head, seemingly trying to place it between his head and the car window.

However, he stopped as soon as his fingertips touched the soft strands of hair at the back of Yu Li's head.

A strand of hair brushed against my fingertips, causing a slight tickle.

Yan Shiting curled his knuckles, but finally withdrew his hand.
