Chapter 16
September 5th was the first day of school at Y University.
On the tree-lined avenue, some students are preparing for activities to welcome new students.
Yu Li dragged her suitcase through the crowd and arrived at the dormitory in a daze.
It's still early; my other three roommates haven't arrived yet.
Yu Li tidied up her bed casually, put on clean sheets, and climbed up to take a nap.
He had been awakened by that dream in the early hours of the morning and hadn't been able to fall back asleep. Now, back in the dormitory he had lived in for three years, in the familiar surroundings, sleepiness washed over him.
Yu Li didn't sleep very well; she kept having some unpleasant dreams.
Around noon, he woke up groggily and heard Liu Cong and Xu Bin's voices.
He lifted the bed curtain and peeked out: "You've arrived."
Liu Cong, who was tidying up his desk, was startled and almost hit the back of his head on the upper bunk bed.
"Oh my, Si'er, you scared me to death!" Liu Cong patted his chest. "So you were here."
Yu Li nodded. "I arrived early this morning."
"It's so nice to stay locally, especially since I'm staying at the Yan Sui family's place. It's so convenient to have a driver pick me up and drop me off," Xu Bin remarked casually as he tidied up the wardrobe.
The four of them had a small group chat in their dormitory. Not long ago, when they were chatting, Yan Sui casually mentioned that Yu Li was staying at his house.
Speaking of this, Liu Cong looked around suspiciously and asked, "Si'er, Yan Sui didn't come?"
Yu Li's grip on the bed curtains tightened slowly. He pursed his lips and said, "I don't know, I came here by myself."
“Yan Sui has already completed all his credits, so he probably won’t be coming to the dorm.” Xu Bin closed the wardrobe door and glanced at Yu Li.
The young man's face was somewhat pale, and there was a bluish tinge under his eyes, clearly indicating that he had stayed up all night and hadn't slept well.
She probably had a fight with Yan Sui. It's never easy living under someone else's roof.
Xu Bin calmly withdrew his gaze, then picked up a basin to collect water in preparation for cleaning.
"By the way, Si'er, you've completed all your credits. Are you planning to do an internship or take the postgraduate entrance exam this year?"
As Liu Cong spoke, he clicked his tongue in frustration and said, "My family wants me to take the postgraduate entrance exam, but I don't even know where to start. I really envy you; your grades have been so good these past three years, you're sure to get a guaranteed spot in the postgraduate program."
Yu Li had already gotten out of bed and was climbing down the ladder.
Upon hearing Liu Cong's words, he calmly replied, "I refused."
Last semester, his advisor talked to him about applying for graduate school.
However, Yu Li's family was not well-off, so she wanted to start working and earning money as soon as possible, and therefore refused.
Liu Cong was stunned.
Yu Li's family was not well-off. When she was filling out her college application, she heard that being a programmer was lucrative, so she chose software engineering.
They all knew this, but Liu Cong didn't expect Yu Li to give up her postgraduate recommendation qualification.
The usually flamboyant Liu Cong pursed his lips a few times, then suppressed his complaints and said, "It's a bit of a pity, but we don't necessarily have to take the civil service exam or the postgraduate entrance exam."
"Didn't you win first prize in the National College Student Innovation Competition when you were a sophomore? You can use that to get a job at some big internet companies, and the salary is high."
Yu Li smiled.
"Hmm, we'll see."
He hasn't quite sorted out what happened yesterday yet; he'll think about it slowly tonight.
Yu Li also went to fetch water and clean up.
In the afternoon, Yan Sui suddenly came to the dormitory.
Yan Sui had also completed all his credits. Yu Li had originally thought that he wouldn't come to school anymore, so he was a little surprised when he saw Yan Sui push the door open and come in.
Yu Li glanced at it briefly before turning her gaze away and continuing to look at the information on the computer.
Liu Cong and Xu Bin were not there at the moment; only Yu Li was in the dormitory.
Yan Sui glanced around the dormitory, pulled up his chair and sat down next to Yu Li, saying, "I woke up at noon and found you weren't here, so I knew you must have come to school."
Yu Li paused as she moved the mouse.
He slowly turned his head and observed Yan Sui's expression.
Just like before, she still laughs innocently and carefree.
It seems Yan Shiting won't tell Yan Sui about their argument last night.
Perhaps considering that he and Yan Sui were good friends, he didn't tell Yan Sui because he didn't want to affect their friendship.
But Yu Li no longer wanted to have anything to do with them.
He turned back to his documents and casually remarked, "You've completed all your credits, so you don't need to come to the dorm."
Yan Sui touched the tip of his nose: "I'm also going to take the postgraduate entrance exam. There's a better learning atmosphere at school."
"Taking the postgraduate entrance exam?" Yu Li was taken aback again.
Grandma Yan kept urging Yan Sui to join her family's company, but unexpectedly, Yan Sui chose to take the postgraduate entrance exam.
"Yeah, I haven't figured out what I want to do in the future, so I might as well do what everyone else does and try taking the postgraduate entrance exam or the civil service exam."
Yan Sui looked at Yu Li.
He knew that Yu Li had refused to be recommended for graduate school last semester. "Yu Li, if you want to find an internship, why don't you come to Yan's?"
Yu Li put away the documents, typed a line of code, and said, "No, I can't rely on you for everything."
Yan Sui paused for a moment, then nodded in agreement: "That's true, it's better if you get in based on your own abilities. If I interfere, there's no guarantee that people in the company won't gossip."
"You're so amazing, I believe in you!"
After finishing his sentence, Yan Sui hummed a song happily as he went to tidy up his bed.
Yu Li stared at the few lines of code on the computer screen and remained silent for a long time.
Although I was determined to have no further contact with the Yan family, putting it into practice was still quite difficult.
After all, Yan Sui knew nothing, so his sudden change of attitude must have puzzled the other party.
Speaking of which, the document he was just looking at was also found for him by Yan Sui.
Yu Li frowned and sighed softly.
Forget it, let's just treat each other normally. Once he finds an internship and graduates, he won't have much contact with Yan Sui anymore.
...
Yu Li could sense that most of her classmates were feeling lost by their senior year.
Tonight alone, several classmates came to visit their dorm room and asked them what they planned to do this year.
Upon learning that Yan Sui was also preparing for the postgraduate entrance examination, everyone who came was surprised, and then they talked to Yan Sui for most of the day.
There were quite a few people in the dormitory, so Yu Li took her kettle to the water room to get hot water and get some fresh air.
As soon as Yu Li reached the water room, he heard someone mention his name.
"...That Yu Li has been following Yan Sui around like a shadow. I guess he's already currying favor with the Yan family and is planning to intern at the Yan Corporation."
Upon hearing the voice, Yu Li knew who it was.
Lin Jiafan, who is in the same major as him.
They competed for the national scholarship together in their sophomore year, and Yu Li won it. Lin Jiafan then thought that Yan Sui had pulled some strings for Yu Li.
After that, Lin Jiafan disliked Yu Li very much.
"Could someone get into the Yan family through connections? It doesn't seem likely." These were the words of Lin Jiafan's roommate.
"Of course not with ordinary relationships, but that's Yan Sui, President Yan's own younger brother."
"Not necessarily. Yu Li's grades are so good, she should be able to get a recommendation for graduate school..."
Before the person behind could finish speaking, they saw Yu Li standing at the entrance of the water room.
He quickly stopped talking and nudged Lin Jiafan next to him with his elbow, feeling guilty.
Lin Jiafan turned around and met Yu Li's gaze.
He looked somewhat uncomfortable, but then gave a disdainful sneer.
Yu Li lowered her gaze and ignored him.
The two people had already filled the hot water containers, and Yu Li stepped forward and swiped her card.
Behind him, Lin Jiafan told his roommate to leave first, then blocked the doorway with a water bottle.
"I really envy some people who can turn their lives around simply by sucking up to others."
Yu Li lowered her eyes to look at the spout of the teapot and ignored him.
Lin Jiafan was annoyed and raised her voice: "Am I wrong?"
The hot water has been poured into the kettle.
For some reason, Yu Li suddenly became very angry, and she couldn't suppress it no matter what she did.
He understood that everyone was a bit restless in their senior year, but what did that have to do with him?
He was already in a bad mood because of what happened last night.
Thinking of this, Yu Li suddenly removed the water card and turned to glare at Lin Jiafan.
"If you want to curry favor with Yan Sui, then go ahead and do it. What's the point of being jealous of me?"
"If you're really bored, you should think about how to earn enough credits!"
Lin Jiafan's grades were quite good in his freshman year, but after entering his sophomore year, he lost focus on his studies, failed courses and missed classes, so he has not yet earned enough credits.
Lin Jiafan was a little confused.
"You..." That's not right, is it?
Yu Li is usually like a steamed bun; even if she knows they are talking badly about her, she doesn't care.
Why has it suddenly changed?
Yu Li ignored him and angrily left with the water bottle.
It wasn't until she got back to her dorm that Yu Li snapped out of her daze.
The feeling of being unable to control his emotions just now was really unpleasant, leaving him somewhat bewildered afterward.
Yu Li pursed her lips, put down the kettle, and checked her phone.
Why do my emotions fluctuate so much?
A lot of information popped up on the webpage.
[Early pregnancy can cause mood swings...]
Early symptoms of anxiety disorder...
Yu Li's gaze automatically skipped over the first item and landed on the anxiety disorder below.
He bit his lip, his eyes filled with doubt.
Could it be that he/she really has some kind of psychological problem?
Yu Li let out a long sigh.
It's probably because of what happened yesterday that I'm a little emotionally unstable right now. I'll probably be fine after a while.
-
A few days later, Yu Li felt that her emotions had stabilized a lot, so she was relieved.
My classmates have mostly figured out what they want to do, and the dormitory is no longer filled with the same sense of confusion as it was at the beginning of the semester.
Yu Li also started looking for companies to intern at.
After the start of the semester, he spent time creating a small program to organize information, which he planned to bring along as a stepping stone during job interviews.
He submitted his resume to several internet companies in Y city and has been going to several places for written tests and interviews in the past few days.
However, those companies didn't offer very good compensation to interns, and their philosophies differed somewhat from Yu Li's.
In the end, only one large listed company called Chuangyi remained.
Four days ago, Yu Li took the written test for Chuangyi and passed it successfully, thus qualifying for an interview.
The temperature dropped sharply that day.
It rained heavily last night, and it's chilly today. Even Liu Cong, who always prioritizes style over warmth, pulled out his jacket and put it on, while Yu Li was still wearing a short-sleeved shirt.
Before heading out for the interview, Liu Cong caught a glimpse of his attire out of the corner of her eye and was taken aback.
"Si'er, why are you wearing this?"
Yu Li glanced down at her short-sleeved shirt, somewhat puzzled: "Is this inappropriate?"
This is a formal shirt he bought specifically for the interview, and he even wore a tie. I hope it won't be too impolite.
"No." Liu Cong shook his head. "It's quite cold today. Be careful not to catch a cold."
Yu Li smiled reassuringly and said, "I think it's alright."
He waved to his roommates and arrived at the company for the interview before 10 a.m.
As I got out of the taxi, a fine drizzle began to fall again.
Yu Li ran quickly into the office building in the drizzle. The receptionist saw that he was getting wet and gave him a towel.
Yu Li thanked them and wiped the water off her face when she looked up and saw a group of people coming out of the elevator.
The group was dressed in formal attire, looking every bit the elite.
At the very center was Yan Shiting.
