Chapter 2 Profile Picture [WeChat Transfer of 5000]
The scramble for ice cream cones in the front row intensified, with several different audio tracks layered on top of each other in the carriage, creating a noisy and jarring atmosphere.
After observing the boy's calm expression for a few seconds, Yin Xiao guessed that he hadn't heard her, so she had to pull on the seatbelt, lean forward, and repeat herself in a louder voice.
"Excuse me, can I add you on WeChat?"
The boy stopped typing, tilted his head to look at her, and frowned slightly. "Add me on WeChat?"
The doubt in his tone was so obvious that Yin Xiao suddenly lost her confidence and forced herself to explain, "Yeah, let's hang out sometime."
Her voice trailed off, and she finally said dejectedly, "If it's inconvenient, then forget it."
"It's already been added." The boy glanced at her, then sat up, rested his elbows on the back of the front seat, and tapped the passenger seat. "Fang Yiwen, if you keep making noise, you can get out and walk back."
Fang Yiwen turned around blankly, cream still on the corner of his mouth, his cheeks deflated like a balloon that had been suddenly punctured by a needle.
He glanced at the back row, then immediately composed himself, pursed his lips, and replied, "Oh."
The car fell silent instantly. Qi Chen grinned and sneered at the passenger seat before humming a tune as he drove out of the parking lot.
As they merged into the main traffic flow, the boy in the back seat closed his laptop, looked up, and stretched his shoulders.
Yin Xiao was still standing there, meeting his puzzled gaze, and slowly uttered a few words, "What did you add?"
The boy leaned back, his tone flat, and replied as if stating a fact, "We've added each other on WeChat."
The car was too dimly lit for Yin Xiao to see the emotions in his eyes. She blinked slowly, hesitant to speak, her mind racing with countless possible fragments of memories.
Unfortunately, after searching her memory for a long time, she found nothing. She took a breath and tentatively opened her mouth, "When..."
Her lighthearted question was interrupted by the sudden ringing of the phone. She swallowed the rest of her sentence, watching the boy hurriedly put on his Bluetooth headset, nod apologetically to her, and then answer the call.
Yin Xiao turned her head away sullenly, quietly nestled into her seat, and casually glanced at the leather rocking horse pendant in front of her. She gently poked the pony's head, then her attention drifted to the back seat.
The boy seemed to be discussing something with someone, mostly listening, occasionally replying with a sharp English sentence or two, his tone carrying a hint of coldness.
"Junior, don't misunderstand." Fang Yiwen suddenly grabbed the back of the chair and leaned forward, muttering softly, "He's just been too busy writing his thesis and working on projects lately, that's why he's like this. He hasn't even had time to reply to his phone messages. He's usually quite good-tempered..."
Yin Xiao suddenly snapped out of her reverie, momentarily at a loss for words, and smiled to indicate it was alright. Actually, she had just been wondering when they had added each other on WeChat.
The drive back to school was surprisingly smooth, and after about ten minutes, the car pulled into the nearest parking space near the east gate of Anhui University. Yin Xiao picked up her canvas bag and thanked the two senior students in front of her, and before getting out of the car, she couldn't help but glance at the back seat one last time.
The boy was still on the phone, his brows furrowed, his fingers tapping absently on his knees, clearly showing his extreme agitation.
Yin Xiao hesitated for a second, but gave up the idea of saying goodbye to him and decisively bent down to get out of the car.
Suddenly, her wrist was grabbed from behind. She tilted her head in confusion, holding onto the car door as she looked at the boy. He got up from the back seat, reached down to take the rocking horse hanging on the seat, and turned to hand it to her.
"You gave it to me?" Yin Xiao was a little confused.
Seeing the boy nod, she took it and held it in her hand.
I only touched this pendant briefly in the car before and didn't look at it closely. Now that I look at it closely, I realize that it looks like a handmade genuine leather piece, which is quite valuable. The gray, white, pink and brown blocks are pieced together, and the color scheme is sophisticated without diminishing the childlike fun of the rocking horse itself.
To be honest, she really liked the gift, but she had a boundary regarding the relationship and price of gifts. She wouldn't accept a gift that wasn't cheap from someone she wasn't very close to.
All correct at the moment.
She hesitated for a moment, then reached out and handed the car back. Meeting the boy's calm gaze, she was about to speak when he suddenly grabbed the car door.
Through the crack in the door, she could vaguely hear howling from inside the car.
"Dude, I've wanted this for so long, why haven't you given it to me yet...?"
With a bang, the car door slammed shut in front of her. She stood alone in the wind for a while, processing what had happened, before hanging the rocking horse on her bag, silently noting down a return gift, and turning back to school.
After using facial recognition to enter the school, Yin Xiao glanced back at the school gate with lingering concern. She took out her phone from her pocket, added Qi Chen on WeChat (which Fang Yiwen had just given her), and then sent a message to Fang Yiwen:
[Excuse me, what's the name of the student sitting in the back row? Could you please send me his WeChat ID?]
[Fang Yiwen: Don't you two know each other?]
Yin Xiao touched her earlobe with a troubled expression, then kicked away a pebble at her feet, her mind preoccupied.
So... should she really have met him?
When exactly did we meet?
Before her thoughts could wander, her phone vibrated a few times.
[Fang Yiwen: His name is Yi Zhiyan.]
[Fang Yiwen: He said you've already added him.]
—
Yin Xiao returned to her dormitory and took off her down jacket, draping it over the back of a chair. Her roommates weren't there, so she packed her backpack while making a phone call to Ms. Qian Yue.
The phone was on speakerphone and placed on the table, Qian Yue's excited voice crackling and assaulting her eardrums.
"How was the meeting? Was the boy nice?"
Yin Xiao put the thermos on the table and casually replied, "Nothing much... He's a nice person, very enthusiastic."
The image of Qi Chen's round, red woolen hat flashed through her mind.
"That's it? You have nothing else to say?"
Yin Xiao asked in confusion, "What did I say?"
Qian Yue bombarded her with three questions: "Weren't you happy to see him? Weren't you excited? Weren't you surprised?"
Yin Xiao zipped up her bag, hung it on the back of the chair, picked up her water glass, and asked, "What's there for me to be happy about?"
"Aren't you happy to see someone you like?"
"Hmm?" Yin Xiao paused in her drinking, a sip slowly sliding down her throat, followed by a few coughs. "Who do I like?"
Qian Yue was silent for a few seconds, not replying, and seemed to be talking to herself, "I made a mistake? No way... Isn't Xiao Xiao's profile picture him...?"
Yin Xiao turned off the speakerphone and held the phone to her ear, but she was still completely confused.
"Xiaoxiao, you didn't come to the wrong place today, did you?"
"You didn't look for the wrong car; the license plate number is correct."
"Where is he? Is his name Yi Zhiyan? The Yi of easy..."
Yin Xiao suddenly raised her voice, repeating in shock, "Yi Zhiyan!"
"Don't you recognize your own profile picture?"
"My profile picture?!"
Yin Xiao jumped up, unable to sit still any longer. She raised her hand to her forehead, feeling her head buzzing and her temples throbbing.
The call couldn't continue, so she made up an excuse to end it and opened WeChat, staring blankly at the profile picture.
That's outrageous.
The senior who picked her up, according to Qian Yue, wasn't Qi Chen, but Yi Zhiyan. Yi Zhiyan… the boy sitting in the back row? Wait, why is Yi Zhiyan in her WeChat profile picture again?
Too convoluted...
This is outrageous...
Her profile picture was just a blurry image of a handsome man's back; she couldn't see his face clearly, let alone remember who he was...
She was deep in thought when the door lock clicked.
"Xiaoxiao, you're back? My walnut cookies!" Dai Lan untied her scarf and ran over, the refreshing floral scent wafting towards her.
Yin Xiao sniffed, then held her phone up to her face and asked softly, "You set my profile picture, right?"
"Hmm, the punishment you received for losing at cards last semester... have you forgotten? The punishment period hasn't ended yet, so don't deny it."
Yin Xiao quickly denied it, "No...where did you find this photo?"
"You just picked one that looked good from your album." Dai Lan reached out and lifted her chin, complaining unhappily, "What do you mean? I asked you when I changed it, and I only changed it because you didn't object. Why are you asking so many questions now?"
Yin Xiao awkwardly dodged away, walked to the table to charge her phone, and tossed two boxes of walnut shortbread into Dai Lan's arms, trying to change the subject, "Eat quickly, they only have a few days left before they expire."
As expected, Dai Lan didn't care about anything else once she saw the food. She happily tore open the plastic packaging and said, "Don't worry, it won't last until tomorrow."
Yin Xiao was amused and naturally reached out her hand, "Then give me one quickly."
Dai Lan pretended to hug the plastic box tightly, glanced at her, and then took out a piece and handed it over.
Yin Xiao stuffed the food into her mouth with satisfaction, took a tissue to wipe her hands, and lay down on the stool, listening to Dai Lan complain about the communication history exam next week.
Before we could exchange more than a few words, my phone screen lit up.
[YZY: WeChat transfer of 500.00]
Clang.
"Are you seeing a ghost?" Dai Lan picked up her phone from the ground with disgust, glanced at the screen unconsciously, and kindly reminded her, "Someone transferred money to you, accept it."
Yin Xiaomo silently took the phone and watched as the screen automatically went dark.
"Why couldn't the message retraction time be longer?" Yin Xiao asked weakly, pulling Dai Lan along. "Can't we be more understanding of people who accidentally delete messages?"
Dai Lan rested her chin on her hand and glanced at her sideways, assuming that she was also driven crazy by the exam, and didn't take it seriously. "What, did your hand slip?"
Yin Xiao remained silent, staring pitifully at Dai Lan. Dai Lan felt a chill run down her spine under her gaze; a familiar feeling surged through her. "What stupid thing have you done?"
Yin Xiao handed over her phone and recounted everything from yesterday's subway crush to today's "V50" embarrassment in one go.
"I meant 50 points! What should I say now? Explain it clearly?"
Dai Lan twitched her lips. "Several hours have passed, why are you replying now? Isn't it embarrassing enough? Don't reply, just pretend you didn't see it, and salvage the slightest bit of your image as someone who's after money."
Yin Xiao murmured, "Isn't that impolite..."
"Then take the money and say thank you." Dai Lan raised her chin. "Isn't that polite enough?"
"..."
Dai Lan was exasperated and pointed at her phone, muttering, "You cut your own marriage line like this! You finally met a crush, and I thought you'd finally seen the light, but it's all for nothing."
Yin Xiao retorted softly, "Actually, I ran into a crush again today... Although saying this makes me sound like a womanizer, that face is truly a high-level visual treat, so I took a few more glances."
Dai Lan said helplessly, "You also said that guy was handsome yesterday."
"I didn't get a clear look at his face yesterday, I only added him on WeChat because he spoke up for me... Yesterday's handsomeness was a feeling, you know?"
“…” Dai Lan waved her hand, “Alright, alright, you hurry up and explain to this handsome guy how you accidentally reached out to ask for money.”
What will happen if I don't reply?
"What can happen? It'll just be an automatic refund, and we'll all be fine." Dai Lan waved her index finger in front of her eyes, emphasizing, "That's for the best."
Yin Xiao pondered for a moment, then muttered dreamily, "Will he transfer money to me again?"
"Does he think he has too much money? You think he's just throwing it away..." Dai Lan was halfway through her sentence when she saw Yin Xiao's screen flash, and it looked like the same profile picture. She immediately urged, "Quick, take a look. Is he about to ask you something?"
Yin Xiao looked down and opened the message, her expression changing repeatedly.
"What's wrong?" Dai Lan couldn't wait any longer and went over to take a look.
The two stared at the screen, frozen in unison, their breathing unconsciously slowing. Dai Lan rubbed her eyes and bent down to confirm the numbers.
She counted six times to make sure she wasn't mistaken. "Xiao, quickly send me his WeChat! I need a crush like that!"
Yin Xiao hadn't recovered yet. She stared at the message "[WeChat transfer 5000]" on the screen in near horror, automatically ignoring Dai Lan's ramblings, and silently turned around and sat back down at the table.
Wait... is this handsome guy really that generous?!
Her fingers trembled as she tapped the keyboard, but before she could type a single word, another message came through.
[YZY: If that's not enough, let's meet, and I'll give you all the cards.]
? ? ?
Why can't she read Chinese? Did I just meet her and already give her money?
Yin Xiao was filled with questions, her fingers paused, and the anti-fraud radar started beeping.
Is this person just rich or has something wrong with their brain? Could they be a scammer? If she's really blinded by greed and accidentally clicks "accept," they'll send her a link to trick her into clicking it, and then... in the end...
Yin Xiao was jolted awake, not daring to think any further. Without hesitation, she clicked on the homepage, ready to block this crush whose illusion had vanished overnight.
Her fingers swiped stiffly across the list, frantically searching for the blacklist button. The more anxious she became, the less likely she was to find it; the more anxious she became, the more likely she was to make a mistake…
She immediately clicked into the other person's Moments.
His WeChat Moments was clean, with a message at the bottom indicating that he only showed his friends' posts from the last three days.
On such a clean page, she could easily spot his WeChat Moments background at a glance.
The setting sun casts its rays on the beach, the light and shadow blending into the rose-colored sky—a beautiful yet ordinary landscape photograph. In the lower right corner of the photo, a young man sits sideways on a rock, wearing an orange T-shirt and khaki shorts; the contrasting colors are eye-catching, and Yin Xiao can almost feel his sunny, energetic spirit through the screen.
But……
Yin Xiao leaned closer and squinted to observe carefully.
Does he look familiar? Where have I seen those headphones around his neck before...?
Her jumbled thoughts dissipated, and she suddenly snapped back to reality, quickly switching back to the "suspected scammer" chat window.
[Hey, who's your profile picture?]
[YZY: Me]
[YZY: Your profile picture.]
