Chapter 296 The Straw That Broke the Camel
"The person lying down?"
Wen Ni frowned, took the flashlight from the policeman, and shone it in the direction Anxi was pointing.
Near the window, there was an autopsy table, and there was indeed a person lying on it at that moment!
In this cold weather, the person was only wearing a floral dress, lying face up on the cold table. Her hands were folded over her stomach, and her eyes were tightly closed!
"Zhang Meimei?" It was her.
"Dead!?" Anxi swallowed hard before finding her weak and terrified voice.
"Go check it out!" the sheriff ordered his officers.
The officer who was called out gripped his gun tightly and cautiously approached the area step by step!
Everyone held their breath; the rapid, pounding heartbeats seemed to be right in their ears.
When there was still more than a meter to go
Zhang Meimei, who was lying on the dissection table, suddenly opened her eyes and sat up abruptly!
This really scared the young police officer!
He stared in astonishment, stumbling backward until he accidentally bumped into the metal rack holding the specimens, causing one of the jars to shatter on the ground with a crack.
The other officers instinctively raised their guns and aimed at Zhang Meimei, who was sitting there motionless!
The pungent formalin splattered all over the ground, meandering down the slope towards Wenni's feet.
Before the liquid soaked her shoes
She calmly stepped over the liquid and went straight into the dissection room, where she turned on all the individual power switches!
The bright white light tubes illuminated the entire dissection room in an instant!
"What are you trying to do, playing tricks on me?" Wen Ni's voice was cold and clear as she pointed directly at Zhang Meimei.
"I just wanted to be alone for a while, but I didn't expect you to find me so quickly!" Zhang Meimei turned her head, her pale face and lifeless eyes looking at Wen Ni. Her voice was soft and gentle like that of someone from Jiangnan, yet it felt strangely eerie!
"Staying in the dissection room in the middle of the night? Your quirks are really hard to compliment!" Wen Ni tilted her head and looked at her.
"Do you know what? It was right here on this dissection table that I personally cut open Zhen Yuan's belly, just like dissecting a rabbit, and easily found her intestines..." Zhang Meimei smiled sweetly, as if what she was saying wasn't so terrible.
After saying that, she turned around and slowly stepped off the dissection table. She walked slowly to the open window on one side, rested her fingers on the windowsill, and looked down at the crowd gathered below!
"These people have all gathered here because of me. How lucky I am! This is the first time in my life I've received so much attention!" There was even a hint of smugness in his tone!
The officers present felt a chill run down their spines.
"So it really was you who killed Zhen Yuan!" The sheriff was furious, his teeth itching with hatred. "I almost fell for your trick! Men! Arrest her immediately!"
"Don't come any closer!"
Zhang Meimei shouted sharply, turned around and straddled the windowsill. Her breathing was obviously rapid, and she pointed at the police officers who were trying to approach her. "If any of you dare to come any closer to me, I'll jump off here!"
"You're a murderer..."
"Don't provoke her!" Wen Ni coldly stopped the sheriff before he could finish his sentence. Then she strode forward, pressing down on the officer's gun with one hand, calmly looking directly into Zhang Meimei's eyes. "Tell me, why did you do this? Why did you kill Zhen Yuan?"
"Would you...would you like to listen to me?"
A glimmer of light appeared in Zhang Meimei's desperate eyes.
All the police officers turned their attention to Wen Ni.
Wen Ni's delicate face was completely indifferent. She strode over to the dissection bed and sat down without any hesitation!
She casually unwrapped a lollipop and popped it into her mouth before lazily raising her eyes and nodding slowly at Zhang Meimei. "I'm willing to listen. Tell me slowly."
A murderer is about to commit suicide, and she's sitting on the autopsy table with a lollipop in her mouth?!
How ridiculous! That posture, that appearance!
She seems to have really come to join in the fun and listen to the stories!
Six points silently flashed through the officers' minds...
But it was precisely Wen Ni's relaxed state that made Zhang Meimei's tense nerves relax a little!
She bit her lip, and after a long while, her eyes darted around, and she spoke in a hoarse voice, as if she were telling her innermost thoughts, and began to speak slowly and deliberately:
“I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this to you.”
“My hometown is a remote town in the south. I am the eldest child in my family. Besides me, there are two younger brothers. Life is not well-off, and we are even a little strapped for cash!”
“My parents wanted me to drop out of school and work to support my two younger brothers, but I refused. My teacher said that knowledge can change one's destiny, so I studied hard day and night, desperately trying to escape my difficult situation! And I did indeed get into this prestigious university!”
“I was the top student in the whole town! So promising! But do you know what my parents said? They said that it's useless for a girl to be so smart in school, because she'll just have to get married and go to her husband's family! They actually made me give up going to university and leave the money for my two younger brothers!”
"For the first time in my nineteen years of a miserable life, I chose to rebel! Alone, I secretly dragged my heavy luggage and left my hometown to come to this big city I had always dreamed of! The money I carried was all stolen from my family's money box. With so little money, after paying tuition, there wasn't even enough for me to eat three full meals a day!"
Life was already so hard, yet Zhen Yuan and Wang Zhiyuan kept overspending and squandering the little money she had left!
At this point, the tears that had been welling up in Zhang Meimei's eyes finally fell. When she wiped away her tears and looked up again, her bloodshot eyes were filled with nothing but hatred!
“I’m not good at socializing and I’m introverted. At first, they were the only ones who hung out with me. Later, I was afraid they would abandon me, so in order to continue to curry favor with them, I started taking on part-time jobs to earn a little more money to treat them to meals and maintain our relationship! But what did I get in return for my sincerity? They treated me like a cash cow and a free meal card! If they didn’t like something, they would beat and scold me!”
"The more afraid and humble I am, the more they bully me!"
What Zhang Meimei said is truly heartbreaking.
Wen Ni, with a lollipop in her mouth, remained expressionless.
"Wen Ni, I'm very grateful that you helped me in the cafeteria on the day of the exam. But you have no idea that if I had accepted your help then, I would have been treated even worse when I got back to the dormitory!" Zhang Meimei said with a bitter smile.
"How did Wang Zhiyuan die? Was it really just an accident?" Wen Ni asked her suddenly, holding a lollipop.
"Her death was indeed an accident."
Zhang Meimei's expression changed, and she finally sneered, her disdain and contempt evident. "That day, there was an exam, and I didn't let her copy the paper. She came out furious and wanted to hit and yell at me! How could I just stand there and wait to get beaten up? I stepped aside, and she slipped and couldn't stop, falling off the railing due to the momentum!"
