Chapter 190: When are we going on a date?
After the New Year's Eve reunion dinner, Sang Qian noticed that Jin Changyu was acting a bit strangely. Wherever she went, he followed closely behind, without saying a word, just staring at her expectantly.
She went to the tea room to get a cup of warm water, and he followed her in again. Sang Qian couldn't help but ask:
"What are you doing? Why are you following me?"
Jin Changyu's eyes, though concealing a hint of eagerness, were full of anticipation as he asked her softly, "When are we going on a date?"
"puff--"
Sang Qian almost spat out the water she had just put in her mouth.
"Cough cough..."
She coughed lightly, clutching her chest, and looked at him in surprise. "What date? Who said I was going on a date with you?"
Jin Changyu's eyes widened, his expression even more astonished than hers. "Didn't you say you were going to take me to see fireworks tonight?"
"I did everything you asked for this date. You told me to go to sleep, and I went obediently. You told me to eat and take my medicine, and I did. Now you're saying we're not going on the date anymore, so you were just lying to me?"
"???"
Sang Qian's gaze slowly fell on him, and after looking him up and down for a moment, she suddenly realized.
No wonder he changed into a formal suit specifically for going downstairs for dinner. She had initially thought it was to show how much he valued the New Year's Eve reunion dinner, but she hadn't expected this...
Did he think he was going on a date later?
Sang Qian couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"Are you still laughing?"
Jin Changyu's face fell. "You really lied to me?"
Seeing the man's disappointed expression, as if saying "I've been deceived in my feelings," Sang Qian tried hard to suppress a laugh and cleared her throat:
"I'm not kidding you, I really will take you to see the fireworks."
But... she said she was going to watch fireworks, not that she was going on a date with him, right?
Jin Changyu's eyes immediately lit up again, and he asked impatiently, "When do we set off?"
Sang Qian peeked out and glanced at the clock. "No rush, we have to wait until 9:30."
Jin Changyu looked astonished. "Do we have to wait this long?"
But...don't you have to leave early for a date?
Sang Qian said, "What's the rush? We haven't received our New Year's money yet."
To receive New Year's money?
Jin Changyu looked at her in confusion, and was about to ask what kind of New Year's money she was going to give when Chen Ma's voice came from outside:
"Miss, Master, the fruit is cut up, would you like to come and have some?"
"Hey, here it comes."
Sang Qian responded and pulled Jin Changyu outside, saying, "Come on, let's go eat some fruit first."
In the living room, Sang Jingshan saw the two of them come out and greeted them with a smile, "Changyu, come and sit down."
"Okay, Second Uncle."
Sang Qian sat on the sofa and looked up to see the man who had just been acting all spoiled in front of her, but immediately switched back to his usual self in front of her second uncle.
He straightened his clothes neatly and then sat down next to her.
He is the epitome of a mature, steady, and well-mannered son-in-law.
"Miss, these apples are sweet, please have some more."
Chen Ma handed the bowl containing apples that had been specially cut into small pieces to Sang Qian.
"Thank you, Aunt Chen."
Sang Qian smiled and took it, then said to her, "Aunt Chen, don't bother, sit down quickly, the Spring Festival Gala is about to start."
"Okay, I'll go make a pot of tea for Second Master and Son-in-law and then I'll be right back."
Chen Ma smiled and agreed, then went to brew a pot of tea and served a cup to Sang Jingshan and Jin Changyu respectively.
Jin Changyu accepted the teacup with both hands and thanked her, "Thank you, Aunt Chen."
After taking a sip of hot tea and placing the teacup on the table, Jin Changyu glanced at the table full of New Year's goods and fruits. He suddenly remembered that Sang Qian had once mentioned to him that in their hometown, after dinner on New Year's Eve, the whole family would gather around the table full of New Year's food to chat and watch the Spring Festival Gala.
Firecrackers went off outside from time to time, and the TV was showing festive programs to welcome the Spring Festival. The woman next to her was eating fruit with a fork while chatting with her second uncle. Occasionally, she would ask him if he wanted a piece of fruit, or share a delicious snack with Chen Ma. Her eyes were always smiling.
It turns out that she was so happy to spend the Spring Festival with her beloved family.
Seeing that he wasn't saying much, Sang Jingshan worried that he might feel uncomfortable or bored in this house, so he tried to start a conversation with him.
Men always have a lot in common. While the two were chatting, Sang Qian and Chen Ma watched TV and whispered to each other.
After a while, Jin Changyu noticed that she was even eating sunflower seeds and chatting with Chen Ma while watching the Spring Festival Gala.
Seeing how happy she was, looking like she could chat until the lights went out and she went to sleep, Jin Changyu and Sang Jingshan were chatting, and he still had to glance at his watch every now and then.
8:35.
Seeing that the woman beside him showed no intention of leaving and was chatting enthusiastically with Chen Ma, the usually calm and composed Jin Changyu couldn't sit still any longer. He quietly tugged at her sleeve and whispered in her ear:
It's almost 9:30.
Sang Qian glanced at the wall clock, then looked at him with wide eyes, "Big brother, isn't it only 8:30?"
Jin Changyu said in a low voice, "Then shouldn't we leave earlier?"
"No need, don't worry. I know what I'm doing and I won't let you miss the fireworks."
Sang Qian patted the back of his hand, offering a perfunctory reassurance, before quickly turning back to gossip with Aunt Chen, "So that's how my third uncle's son's wife ran away..."
Jin Changyu, “…”
Nine o'clock.
He leaned closer to remind him, but before he could even open his mouth, Sang Qian stuffed a cookie into it and told him, "It's not time yet. If you go too early, you won't see any fireworks, you know?"
Jin Changyu had his mouth stuffed with food. He wanted to speak, but was afraid of upsetting her, so he could only sit aside and silently chew the biscuit in his mouth.
At 9:10, he couldn't contain himself and secretly tugged at Sang Qian's sleeve, but she slapped his hand away.
It wasn't until 9:20 that Sang Qian said to Sang Jingshan, "Second Uncle, I'm going to watch the fireworks with Changyu later."
Sang Jingshan glanced at the wall clock. "Oh, it's time. Okay, you young people go have some fun. Chen Ma and I will watch TV here for a while."
After he finished speaking, he took out two red envelopes from his pocket. "Here, this is the New Year's money your second uncle prepared for you."
Sang Qian immediately smiled and pulled Jin Changyu to his feet and stepped forward.
"Thank you, Second Uncle."
She took one of the letters and then gestured for Jin Changyu to take the other one.
"...Thank you, Second Uncle."
Jin Changyu accepted the gift with both hands and thanked him, but inwardly he wondered:
New Year's money?
Isn't New Year's money only given to children under sixteen?
How can they still accept money when they're all married?
Seemingly noticing his confusion, Sang Jingshan explained, "That's how it is in our village. Younger generations who celebrate the Spring Festival at home can receive lucky money, regardless of age. It's not much money, just for good luck, haha. Uncle, I hope you two will have a loving and happy marriage, and that everything will go smoothly in the new year."
I see.
In the Jin family, people stop receiving New Year's money after the age of sixteen, but every year on the first day of the Lunar New Year, the head of the family will give red envelopes to everyone in the family.
It used to be Grandma, now it's him.
So for the past two years, he's been the one giving out red envelopes, and hasn't had a chance to receive any.
"Thank you for your blessing, Uncle. We..." Jin Changyu glanced at the woman beside him, "...will."
They will definitely be happy.
Sang Qian met his gaze but didn't speak. Instead, she turned to Chen Ma, tilted her head playfully, and held out her hand, "Chen Ma, where's my New Year's money?"
"???"
Jin Changyu exclaimed in surprise, "You even asked Aunt Chen for it?"
Shouldn't it be the employer giving red envelopes to the household servants?
Why is this girl asking Aunt Chen for New Year's money?
Isn't this going against the Heavenly Gang?
