The dimly lit room echoed his unease. Ever since moving here, it felt as if a wall had completely separated him from the An family. Before, it was just a thin sheet of paper, but perhaps they felt it wasn't sturdy enough, so they built a barrier he couldn't overcome.
The touch of his upper and lower eyelashes caused An Chi's eyes pain. He slumped onto the sofa, not wanting to move or think about anything. Su Yao's image kept appearing in his mind. This time, she was no longer teasing him as a fox, but telling him that she would never want him again.
This was a nightmare for Anchi.
Fear, anxiety, and complex emotions surged within him, causing him to tremble all over. Yet, he was unable to rise, his body pressed down as if by a towering mountain, and he was the monkey trapped beneath it, destined to be imprisoned for five hundred years until someone came to rescue him.
But Anchi was still conscious. He knew he was experiencing sleep paralysis, and Su Yao's words about never wanting him were just a dream.
But the dream was short-lived; he actually heard Su calling him.
"Anchi! Anchi! Anchi!"
I could vaguely hear many people talking, and a male voice saying, "It's quite serious."
He was woken up, his face was not good, his lips were still pale, and he had a half-smile on his face. "What's wrong? You're not dead yet."
She lightly slapped him on the lips, and Su pointed at the corner of his mouth with her finger, saying, "What are you saying? Don't say such unlucky things in the future."
As people get older, they become more superstitious. Before she turned thirty, Su always believed that people's lives were in their own hands. After thirty, she always lamented that everyone has their own destiny and that life is unpredictable.
He consciously spat out three times.
"Why do you have a fever? Aunt Hong came to see you this morning and found you unconscious. She called you but you wouldn't wake up. She called me, and I came to wake you, but you still wouldn't wake up. It scared me to death, you know?" Su Yao pulled the doctor in the white coat next to her. "If the doctor hadn't come and carried you to your room, you would have been lying uncomfortably on the sofa the whole time. Why didn't you go back to your room to sleep? Now look what happened, you have a fever."
He watched her rambling on and on, and suddenly felt a stinging sensation in his eyes and a strong choking smell in his nose. He turned his head and buried it even deeper into the pillow.
Su wanted to see what he was doing, so she leaned forward and saw that the child was crying, with tears falling like beans, quickly wetting the pillow.
She turned to look at the doctor. "You can go back to your work now. I can take care of the fever. Thank you for your help."
The doctor was specially transferred from a nearby hospital by Su Yao, as it was inconvenient for the family doctor to stay at the old house. When she arrived, she found that An Chi's condition was not right, so she immediately called a doctor at a nearby hospital to check on him.
After the doctor left.
Su sat up straight and said, "If you want to cry, just cry. Why hold it in?"
An Chi turned his face to the side, tears streaming down his nose, his eyelashes glistening with a bright sheen.
Not to mention Su Yao rarely cries, even An Chi rarely cries, but recently the two of them have been crying one after another.
She handed him a piece of paper: "Crying is contagious."
Making jokes seemed to be Su Yao's unique way of making An Chi laugh, but the curve of his lips was completely out of sync with the tears on his face.
Seeing that he was feeling a bit better, Su asked, "Why were you crying? Are you in pain?"
An Chi shook his head. "It seems I've lied to you again."
"Well, it's fine as long as they didn't scam me out of money."
“My mom really doesn’t like me,” he continued, picking up where she left off.
Su was stunned. She smiled awkwardly, "How could that be? Aunt An still cares about you a lot."
"During the four years I was abroad, I was the only one in touch with her; she never messaged me first."
"No, she messaged me to ask how you were doing."
"Really? Is she still asking if Anlan can go abroad with me?"
This wasn't a question; it was as if he already knew the purpose behind the greeting.
"An Chi," she called softly, feeling a mix of emotions. She hadn't eaten anything, yet her mouth felt as bitter as if she had swallowed a bitter herb.
The boy had grown into a man, but now he was curled up, still looking like a child who lacked love. It seemed like nothing had changed, which made Su Yao feel helpless.
She bent down, hugged him, and gently patted his back, speaking in a soothing tone: "Don't cry, don't cry. Anchi has someone who loves him. Who loves him? Me, don't cry, don't cry. Anchi has someone who cares for him. Who cares for him? Me."
One sentence made the heartbroken An Chi laugh through his tears. He released her embrace and looked into Su Yao's eyes: "Trying to coax a child."
Her eyes were red, not from bloodshot veins, but from unstoppable tears. She wiped the traces from the corner of her lips: "Does your eye hurt from crying?"
He smiled and asked, "Does it hurt? Does my sister love me? Or does my mother love me?"
Su wanted to cup his face and kiss away the tiny teardrops.
"No, tears are salty." He refused, simply because he didn't want her to suffer like that.
Su Yao: "An Chi, don't imagine that you will receive love by giving, because the person who truly loves you will love you without you having to give."
She thought of a quote that Carnegie once said: "The greatest evil in human nature is to consume the kindness of others." When people can no longer control you, they will start to hate you.
Crying is very tiring. After An Chi finished crying, coupled with the burning heat on his forehead, all he wanted to do was sleep.
Su waited until An Chi had cried enough, then helped him lie down, tucked him in, and waited until he was sound asleep before leaving the house.
Standing at the door, what she recalled most was that day when An Chi confessed to her the truth about how he had schemed against her to adopt An Lan.
Su was unhappy because she had been deceived by a young boy, so she wanted to end her relationship with him as soon as possible.
That day was rushed, and I wasn't in the mood to talk to An's mother and An Lan. After Su wanted to go back, she felt that she shouldn't involve them, so she went to the hospital again the next day, hiding from An Chi.
She intended to push the door open and enter, but instead, she was met with offensive words.
"Now that I'm better, shouldn't Sister Su adopt me?"
"Lanlan, you can't leave your mother."
"But I also want to live in a big house."
“I heard it from your brother. He said that the children of rich people don’t treat him well. You can’t suffer like that. You should stay at home and behave yourself. Mom has some savings now, and Miss Su has given us so much money. Mom can also let you live in a big house.”
"Oh well."
Su Yao felt it was ironic. Yesterday, An Chi was pleading for the mother and daughter, saying they loved him and would give the opportunity to An Lan, but they treated him like this. Did he really not know, or was he pretending to be stupid and trying to deceive her again?
In the end, she didn't go in. Instead, she felt much better, and she didn't tell An Chi about these things. She also treated An Chi's mother and An Lan with respect. She did all this just to maintain An Chi's inner peace and love.
She simply attended An Chi's parent-teacher meeting to support him.
Su leaned against the door, her thoughts wandering. Aunt Hong came up and interrupted her, "Miss, dinner's ready. Call out to the young master."
Su heard the sound and wanted to turn around and go inside, but she put her hand on the doorknob and then pulled it back: "Let him sleep a little longer. When he wakes up, heat up the food, or see what he wants to eat and order takeout."
Aunt Hong listened, and then led Su into the restaurant for a meal.
In order to keep an eye on An Chi and make sure he didn't get into trouble, Su simply moved her workspace to the study in the afternoon. She hadn't been to the study for a long time, and she rarely even went into her room, let alone worked there.
When Ge Jin came over to deliver the things, she did nothing but sit on the sofa, spinning her phone between her legs and hands like a toy, her eyes filled with unfathomable emotions, appearing empty.
"President Su, everything is ready." Ge Jin interrupted her thoughts.
Su looked at him and said, "I know, you can go back now. I'll contact you if I need anything. I'll move my things back myself tomorrow."
Ge Jin nodded and left.
Entering the study, she placed her hand on the dark table, turned on the computer, took the black pen from the document clipped to it, and began to read the document page by page.
This time seemed to overlap with the day when she promised An Chi to come here to see him. They were like this back then, not speaking, he doing his thing, she doing her thing, only in different positions.
She cared about her child's studies, so she gave her the study room to her and stayed in the room herself. Now, she's the one working in the study, while An Chi stays in the room.
The clatter of the keyboard echoed in the empty room, while the scribbling of the pen on the white paper filled the air. Su Yao's neck, which hadn't moved for a long time, ached.
When the phone rang, she jerked her head up, almost thinking she'd had a muscle spasm; it was Shang Jiuqi.
"I got married." His voice was calm, yet he couldn't hide the sob in his voice when the call connected.
Su checked the caller ID and, seeing it was indeed Shang Jiuqi, put the phone to her ear and said, "Congratulations! You've finally won the heart of your beauty."
Apart from Xu Jingsi and Zhou Qingran, who were childhood sweethearts and destined to be together, the rest of them seemed to be cursed, with their relationships going badly.
Pei Zhixi, for some reason, keeps running away from the girls he likes. He has the most handsome face, yet he's still like this.
Shang Jiuqi, who was supposed to be the youngest among them and not in a hurry for these things, ended up waiting for the girl to fall in love, get married, and get divorced before finally marrying her.
She, Su Yao... She thought about it, and realized that among all the men who pursued her, not one of them could make her willingly be with him. It seemed that she was born without the ability to handle these romantic relationships. Bai Lutong had also pursued her for a long time before finally succeeding.
She herself didn't know who could move her in the future. She felt that she was born to be alone at work. As she thought about it, she started typing on the keyboard uncontrollably again, while listening to Shang Jiuqi talking in her ear.
"Remember to come to the wedding." Shang Jiu hung up the phone. Su Yao sighed, smiled faintly, and closed her laptop.
I casually opened the drawer next to me and remembered that there were mints inside, which I had specifically used to help her stay awake.
Upon touching it, there was no box of mints, but instead a small leather notebook.
Curious, she opened it and saw An Chi's childish handwriting, but the paper was worn and old, like an old notebook. Unlike his flamboyant handwriting now, his handwriting back then was neat and proper.
The other drawer wasn't there, so she switched hands and opened the cabinet. This time, it was finally there. Su was about to unwrap a candy and put it in her mouth, but her eyes were glued to everything in the notebook...
