Meeting
After Su landed in Singapore, all tenderness vanished from his eyes; only indifference and the pursuit of profit by countless wolves and tigers remained.
Ge Jin arrived at the airport to pick her up. "Report," she said simply, her two words carrying an irresistible force.
"The implication is that this project must be delayed, and short-term benefits will be problematic; our return on investment will not improve at all." Ge Jin opened the meeting minutes, handed them to Su Yao, and placed them carefully in her hands.
Su sat in the passenger seat, looking at the meeting report and listening to Ge Jin's report.
"The issues raised by Assistant Tang are a summary of Mr. Bai's overall interception of projects. However, the ultimate beneficiary of these events is still you, because Mr. Bai is investing and trading under the name of the Su family, and your shareholding in the Su family is relatively large. Meanwhile, Mr. Liu's negotiations are going smoothly. If there are no problems with the contracts here, we can get the final profits."
Ge Jin reported meticulously, knowing that Su Yao was not in a good mood. Even if she returned to China and met An Chi, it wouldn't change her mind. He bore a great responsibility for these successive mistakes.
Su nodded in agreement with his summary, but simply said, "Drive carefully, you worked hard yesterday."
Ge Jin didn't dare to show too much emotion. He was driving again and had made many mistakes. The worst thing he could do was to let his emotions get the better of him.
Seeing his serious expression and his unconsciously clenched fingers, Su joked with him, "Am I that scary?"
Ge Jin paused briefly before replying, "No."
"Then why are you so nervous?" Su put the folder aside, rubbed her forehead, and closed her eyes. "Why are you nervous?"
"Too many mistakes lately." This short and forceful response used to be Su Yao's favorite way of answering, but now she could only sigh.
Too much communication allowed them to complement each other and achieve success, but they neglected to truly connect with one another.
This is also something Su noticed when she was with An Chi. She didn't understand An Chi. She only knew how to execute various plans and demanded things from An Chi, like a superior and subordinate relationship. But An Chi wasn't like that. He understood her. He didn't clearly separate public and private matters, but he did it just right. Perhaps he was a good partner, but he couldn't be called a good boss.
“Actually, you don’t need to take Tang Pai’s problem upon yourself. You can’t guarantee that everyone will make mistakes, Ge Jin.” Su Yao’s eyes were fixed on the wide road and clean streets. Singapore’s sanitation control has always been very strict, just like hers over everyone in the company. But there will always be someone who carelessly leaves trash behind, and Tang Pai was just that kind of careless person. Such a person will inevitably be fined, and she should indeed take action to punish Tang Pai. But that doesn’t mean that passersby should be involved, nor does it mean that Ge Jin should be held responsible for it. “Tang Pai is no longer the little girl who needs you to take charge of everything. She should learn to be responsible for her own actions, and you shouldn’t feel sorry for it.”
Upon hearing her words, Ge Jin forced a pale, ugly smile.
Su sighed as she looked at him. Sometimes she wondered if she should stop being so shrewd. Years of familiarity had made her realize that Ge Jin probably felt she didn't need him anymore. In fact, this had happened more than once before; once was when she was recruiting...
That year they were 28 years old, which is how the phrase "approaching 30" is used to describe them.
"You're looking for a new assistant?!" Ge Jin burst through the door, his emotions running high. His eyes were bloodshot from working on the proposal all night. Su frowned, looking at his hand gripping the doorknob.
He realized Su Yao's intention, but reluctantly closed the door, knocked, and waited for Su Yao to say "Come in."
There were indeed many rules at the beginning. Su Yao didn't want to give Su Wenxie or Su Qingye any leverage, so she strictly demanded of herself and her subordinates.
"Come in." Without even the word "please come in," Ge Jin's arrogance vanished instantly, and his momentum weakened considerably.
He walked in dejectedly, his voice barely audible, "Why did you hire a new assistant?"
"You're too busy with work, don't you want to rest?" Su's reason was actually for his own good, leaving him speechless for a moment. After a long while, he finally managed to stammer, "I don't want to rest..."
Su Yao merely glanced at him, without responding to a single word.
At that time, Ge Jin was not so taciturn. He was a capable worker and a eloquent young man. But for some reason, ever since Tang Pai joined the company, things have changed.
He was ignored, and after a long while, he finally managed to utter a sentence: "If you want someone else to replace me, you can just say so."
Subsequently, Ge Jin left without even hearing Su Yao's response.
Su watched his departing figure, feeling puzzled. She wanted to call out to him, but didn't know what to say, so she ultimately remained silent.
At the time, Su Yao didn't understand why Ge Jin was so angry. She had made the plan to reduce his workload, but he was actually angry, which was unbelievable. At that time, she admired Ge Jin as a very dedicated work partner.
Later, when it came to screening people, Ge Jin was actually more attentive than she was.
She made some small decisions that she herself didn't care much about, but Ge Jin would always remember them.
The final list included three people.
He submitted it, and Su wanted to make the final decision.
Su glanced at the three resumes; they were clearly formatted by someone. She looked at Ge Jin standing next to her and asked, "Did you format them for them?"
"Okay, this way it'll be easier for you to see."
"Give me the original resume. You can't hire someone who doesn't even know how to format a resume."
Ge Jin retorted, "I've checked it all. The resume format is correct. It's just to make it easier for you to read."
Su held the resume in her hand, flipped through it from left to right, and thought for a while. "Just give me the original resume. One's behavior and habits best reflect a person."
Ge Jin didn't say anything this time, but went out to get the documents and handed them to Su Yao.
This time, Su didn't look at the resumes first, but instead asked, "Who do you think has the most potential?"
"Tang Pai." A brief, clean, and forceful response.
"Then it's her." Su handed the resume back to Ge Jin.
Ge Jin looked at her with some surprise.
"Since you've already made your choice, then I won't pick it."
Actually, Su Yao was also present during the interview. She had a rough idea of who to choose, and after reviewing the resumes, she realized that Tang Pai wasn't the most outstanding of the three.
But one thing about her really attracted Su Yao: when asked about her overtime hours, Tang Pai didn't fawn over her or make any unreasonable demands. She simply asked, "What is the definition of overtime in your company? And... is overtime paid?"
Su Yao immediately became interested. In fact, few young people today have a clear understanding of the definition of overtime, which makes it easier for capital to oppress and exploit them. Tang Pai's clear definition of the boundaries from the start shows his meticulous and rigorous attitude.
"Didn't you want to see my resume?"
"Yes, that's what I was thinking before, but I just realized that a resume is already prepared during the interview, so why bother with theory? But it's really kind of you to make this trip." Su Yao's face was full of apology.
Ge Jin subconsciously said, "It's nothing." Then he tried to take his resume and leave the office.
Su tried to stop him, "Will she be able to start work tomorrow?"
Ge Jin lowered his eyes, his emotions unreadable, and he wasn't particularly interested. "Tomorrow is too tight. The HR department needs to confirm, so it should be the day after tomorrow at the earliest."
“Okay, you’ll have weekends from now on!” Su Yao said to him with a smile. At that time, she remembered that Ge Jin was stunned. She didn’t understand what his stunned expression meant at the time, but from then on, he spoke less and less. Later, she realized that his anger was because he felt that she no longer needed his worries, and his stunned expression was a sign of heart palpitations. He had thoughts in his mind, thoughts that she couldn’t fathom. By the time she figured them out, it was too late.
Later, he really did his best to teach Tang Pai a lot of work-related matters. For a while, Tang Pai made mistakes repeatedly, and Ge Jin took full responsibility for it.
Later, after Tang Pai took charge of things on his own, he rarely participated in smaller projects, which indeed reduced his workload considerably.
Su Yao never expected that he would still be thinking about taking on the responsibility of Tang Pai.
To ease the tension again, Su joked with him, "You seem to care a lot about Paipai, but she doesn't have a boyfriend."
"She should have a boyfriend soon, Su Yao... Don't joke like that, and you know exactly what I'm thinking." Since he's calling her "Su Yao," it seems Ge Jin is taking this seriously.
Su didn't reply, but sighed and turned to look out the car window.
Once the contract in Singapore is finalized, this matter can finally be put to rest. Su needs to understand that Bai Lutong in China will always be a difficult person to deal with. He is too self-centered and imposes his own ideas on others, which is never helpful. She really doesn't know if this young master listened to her clearly last time. His behavior has hardly changed. Apart from not contacting her often, his other behaviors are still problematic.
Meanwhile, back home, the rumors were still rampant. Su Yao and Bai Lutong seemed to be a couple who couldn't end their relationship without getting married. From their university days to now, both of them have entered their thirties, and many people are watching the drama unfold, except for An Chi.
He didn't continue his science studies, so things became easier for him. He continued doing many things at the company, and rumors in the industry reached An Chi's ears just as quickly.
"Is it true that President Su and President Bai are real? I heard that our President An and President Su have some connection."
"I know that. President An's training was all thanks to President Su."
"Does Mr. An know about their relationship?"
Why are you so curious?
...
The two, engrossed in their conversation, did not notice that An Chi was heading towards the tea room.
"They're not real." This casual remark startled the two, who immediately bowed their heads. "Hello, President An."
An Chi emphasized again: "They are not real."
The two looked at each other, said nothing, and silently walked away.
An Chi was pouring coffee, looking down as if deep in thought, his brows furrowed, then relaxing and smiling after a while.
