Chapter 10: Finding a House

After talking about setting up the stall, he talked about renting a house.

Lin Minjun took out the tea she bought today and said embarrassedly, "I just came to North City and don't know much about the area. I went out for a walk today, but couldn't find anyone to ask about this matter. If you have time, can you help me find out? It doesn't matter if the environment is good or bad, as long as I can find a place to settle down first."

There aren't that many immigrants in the North City right now, and there aren't any real estate agents. After much thought, she decided to trouble the Zhao family again.

At the dinner table, Zhao's mother remained silent from the time she ate to the time she chatted, drinking bowl after bowl of the drunken chicken that Lin Minjun had specially made.

This dish tastes a bit like medicinal food, the chicken is tender and smooth, and drinking the soup makes one feel warm all over. In addition, Lin Minjun speaks politely and treats people sincerely, so for a moment, Mother Zhao really treats her as her own child.

After taking another sip of chicken soup, Zhao's mother's pale face regained some color. She smiled and said, "You are our guest. Why are you being polite? You are just asking about renting a house. Anyway, I am recuperating at home now. I will help you find out when I am free."

Zhao Ning and Zhao's father also said, "That's right, you bought tea leaves, wasting money. It's just a matter of saying something. Let's help to find out. We are all from the old North City. This is not difficult."

Lin Minjun knew that the other person was helping her out of kindness, so after pushing the tea leaves around, she finally gave it to Mr. Zhao, and the house-hunting process officially began.

It is said that finding a house is not difficult, but in fact it is still difficult. Now there are not enough houses for every household in the city. Some families of five live in a yard of more than ten square meters. If they have a house, it is not enough for them to live in, so how can they rent it out?

The Zhao family was helping to look for him, and Lin Minjun was also looking for him herself, but they searched for three days in a row and still found nothing.

There was still no news about the house that day. Lin Minjun came back from the street and just walked into the alley, she heard the neighbors chatting. They seemed to be talking about Zhao Ning's family.

An old lady with gray hair was washing clothes and said, "I think it's been a while since Zhao Ning came home, but why haven't I seen Zhengang and his wife? I haven't seen Xiao Liuzi recently either."

The old lady was washing clothes, and a middle-aged woman was helping to hang them up. She smiled and said, "Don't you know? Every household is under housing pressure. I heard that my sister was coming back, and my mother-in-law happened to be sick, so Zhengang took his wife and children back to her parents' home and asked for leave from the factory. However, the factory only allows a week at most, so it's time for him to come back, right?"

The old lady shook her wet clothes and understood. "I was wondering why Zhen Gang left as soon as my sister came back. Do you remember that Zhao Ning brought a girl back and said she was staying at her house? There were only two rooms, and Zhao Ning and the girl lived there. Zhen Gang couldn't bring his wife back and squeeze the room. It's not that the child won't come back, but he would have nowhere to stay even if he came back. I was wondering why I always saw Zhao Ning's mother looking sad recently."

There are two children in the Zhao family. Lin Minjun had also heard Zhao Ning mention that he had an older brother named Zhao Zhengang, who was already married and had children. She wondered why she didn't see him when she came this time.

Now, after listening to the conversation between these two old neighbors, I finally understood that when Zhao Ning's brother saw his sister coming back, he took his wife and children back to his mother-in-law's house. He originally wanted to make room for his sister so that she could have a good rest for two days.

Unexpectedly, because of my arrival, Zhao Ning's brother had to stay at his mother-in-law's house and couldn't come back.

Now that the factory's leave date is approaching and they haven't found a place to move to, one can imagine how anxious the Zhao family is.

Lin Minjun also felt the urgency and was even more eager to find a place to move out.

I walked past the two old neighbors and returned to Zhao's house.

After arriving at Zhao's house, I saw Zhao's mother and Zhao Ning sitting in the living room. When she saw Lin Minjun coming in, Zhao's mother's eyes were full of hope, "Did you find it?"

Lin Minjun shook her head. "No, I walked around the streets and asked in a few alleys, but they all said there were no vacant houses. Did you find any?"

Mother Zhao spread her hands and said with a wry smile, "I have asked around in all the houses nearby, but I haven't heard of anyone who has a house for rent. My dear, how is your place?"

"Not really." Zhao Ning's face looked better. He poured Lin Minjun a cup of tea, motioning her to drink it to warm herself up, and then continued talking.

"Didn't I go to the Youth Affairs Office again today? I asked while I was waiting in line, but everyone said they hadn't heard of anyone who had a house for rent."

Zhao Ning has been queuing up at the Youth League Office every day recently, waiting for the office to arrange a job for him.

After comparing the information, the three people found that there were no houses for rent nearby. They had to put all their hopes on Zhao's father. He was a chef in a famous state-owned hotel in the north city. He met many people and naturally could get a lot of information.

When it was getting dark, Zhao's father came back from outside slowly. As soon as he entered the house, Zhao's mother couldn't wait to ask, "How is it? Did you get any news?"

Father Zhao drank a cup of tea and then said slowly, "I found out."

Lin Minjun breathed a sigh of relief. To be honest, she felt more pressure than Zhao Ning living in Zhao Ning's house, occupying his brother's house, and she also wanted to move out as soon as possible.

Mother Zhao was even more excited than Lin Minjun. "Really? What kind of house is it? Where is it located? How many people live in the yard? Are the neighbors easy to get along with?"

"You ask so many questions at once, where should I start?" Father Zhao frowned, still speaking slowly.

"Then tell me one by one."

Father Zhao poured himself another cup of tea slowly and took a sip. "This house is a quadrangle courtyard, a large compound like ours, but there are a lot of people living in the courtyard, dozens of households. The location is in Chongwen, and we are neighbors. Everything else is good, but I heard that there is a person who has just been reformed from labor camp living in the quadrangle courtyard."

Finally, he looked around the three people in the room and finally stopped at Lin Minjun. "What do you think?"

Before Lin Minjun could say anything, Zhao's mother spoke first, "Poor Chongwen, poor Chongwen, the environment there is probably not that good."

"Auntie, I'm not afraid of dirt and mess. At worst I can just clean it up myself." Lin Minjun said quickly.

Mother Zhao shook her head. "That's not what I meant. There are only 20 families living in our yard. You built an earthquake shelter, and I built a small kitchen. We are all so crowded. There are dozens of families over there. You won't have any room to clean up. The most important thing is that there is a neighbor who just got reformed through labor and lives in the fourth courtyard. He has to pass by the first three courtyards every day. What if he has any bad intentions?"

"What my mother said makes sense. Chongwen is not close to us, and Minjun is a girl from another place. If something happens, there will be no one to help." Zhao Ning followed.

Although Zhao's mother was particularly anxious, her eldest son's leave was about to expire and he was still waiting to go home to work.

But she couldn't go against her conscience and let a young girl from outside the area live in a house where prisoners were her neighbors.

So even though she was extremely anxious, Zhao's mother still firmly disagreed after hearing what her husband said, "No, I know the environment of that house is bad without even seeing it. It's not suitable for a little girl to live there. Old Zhao, please continue to ask around when you are at work."

Father Zhao was a little impatient. "I asked about one and you didn't agree. Where are the other houses waiting for you to choose?"

I searched for three or four days but couldn't find a suitable house. I finally found one, but I couldn't live in it. The situation came to a standstill.

But Lin Minjun certainly won't sit there and wait for death.
